Abstract

The development of digital technology has influenced children’s learning patterns and information consumption, including within non-formal religious education settings such as Taman Pendidikan Al-Qur’an (TPQ). Although digital media have the potential to serve as educational tools, risks such as exposure to inappropriate content, excessive gadget use, and declining learning focus necessitate structured and targeted mentoring. This community service activity aims to enhance TPQ students’ media literacy and to strengthen teachers’ capacity to utilize media as educational resources through an Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) approach. The program was implemented at TPQ Baitul Halim Babatan Wiyung, Surabaya, involving approximately 30 students and three teachers. The stages of the activity included community asset mapping (discovery), formulation of shared aspirations (dream), design of mentoring modules and training programs (design), implementation of media literacy education for students and technical guidance for teachers (define/destiny), and program evaluation through reflective activities (reflection). The results indicate an improvement in students’ understanding of ethical media use, their ability to identify educational and safe content, and the emergence of basic critical attitudes toward digital information. TPQ teachers (Ustadz and Ustadzah) also demonstrated enhanced competence in selecting and integrating educational media into the learning process. This program contributes to the establishment of a positive, character-based media literacy culture grounded in Islamic values within the TPQ environment and has the potential to be developed as a sustainable mentoring model in non-formal education.

Abstract

The rapid development of digital media has transformed the landscape of Islamic education, particularly for elementary school-aged children. This study aims to examine how YouTube channels, specifically Nussa Official and Riko the Series, function as alternative media for delivering basic Islamic education. Using a qualitative content analysis approach based on Krippendorff and interpreted through Miguel Sabido’s entertainment-education framework, this research analyzes the structure, narratives, and thematic patterns within the content of both channels. The findings reveal that these animated videos integrate educational and entertainment elements to convey religious values in an engaging and accessible manner. The narratives predominantly employ transitional characters, allowing children to learn through processes of transformation from not knowing to knowing, and from inappropriate to appropriate behavior, rather than through rigid moral dichotomies. Furthermore, the content consistently embeds core Islamic teachings (aqidah, syariat, and akhlak) within everyday contexts, making them relatable and practical for young audiences. The open nature of digital platforms, including interactive features and cross-platform integration, also contributes to the democratization of education, enabling broader participation in the dissemination and reinforcement of educational values. This study concludes that YouTube serves not only as a medium of entertainment but also as an effective space for informal Islamic education that aligns with contemporary learning needs and supports the realization of quality education in the digital era.

Abstract

This study examines how Islamic education grounded in local wisdom is constructed and disseminated through the TikTok account of NU Lumajang. The research draws on the theoretical perspectives of the mediatization of religion and on Clifford Geertz's concept of religion as a cultural system to explain the interaction among media logic, religious authority, and local cultural values in digital environments. Employing a qualitative netnographic approach, the study investigates the production, circulation, and audience engagement of religious content on social media. Data were collected through the observation and documentation of 87 TikTok videos uploaded throughout 2025, analysis of user interactions in the comment sections, and in-depth interviews with account managers and selected followers to strengthen the interpretation of online findings. The findings reveal that Islamic education on TikTok NU Lumajang is communicated through short, visually engaging videos that integrate normative Islamic teachings with local traditions, cultural symbols, and regional languages. This strategy enables Islamic values to be conveyed in a contextual, inclusive, and accessible manner while reinforcing local cultural identity. The study concludes that TikTok NU Lumajang functions as a digital space where religious authority, local wisdom, and platform logics are continuously negotiated. The article contributes to the growing scholarship on digital religion by demonstrating how Islamic organizations utilize social media not only to disseminate religious teachings but also to preserve and recontextualize local cultural traditions within contemporary digital communication practices.

Abstract

This article examines meaningful participation as a structural mechanism for advancing ecological justice in environmental and forest governance. Exclusionary governance has produced persistent inequalities for Indigenous and rural communities whose participation remains largely procedural. This study analyzes the gap between normative participatory commitments and their substantive implementation across four jurisdictions — Indonesia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the European Union — using a qualitative Systematic Literature Review of peer-reviewed scholarship, legal instruments, and policy documents. Findings reveal significant institutional variation: Indonesia exhibits centralized authority and weak accountability; New Zealand institutionalizes ecological justice through the legal personhood of Te Urewera and the Whanganui River; the United Kingdom demonstrates procedural transparency without redistributive impact; the European Union provides multilevel participatory architecture with uneven equity outcomes. The study argues that meaningful participation requires structural guarantees of recognition, accountability, and empowerment — not procedural inclusion alone — and offers conceptual tools for reforming environmental law in contexts marked by power asymmetries and ecological degradation.
