Abstract

This study aims to examine the uniqueness of Pasola cultural practices in both districts, identify the similarities and differences from geographical and cultural perspectives, and explore the cultural values that can be utilized as learning resources in cultural geography. The research employed a qualitative method with an ethnographic approach. Data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews with traditional leaders (Rato), Pasola participants, local communities, and field documentation. Data analysis was conducted through reduction, presentation, and verification to obtain a comprehensive understanding of Pasola practices. The findings reveal that Pasola in Wanokaka and Lamboya Districts shares similarities in ritual functions, the symbolism of blood as fertility, and the central role of the Rato as the spiritual leader. However, differences are found in the timing of the event, the arena setting, community participation, and the ritual atmosphere. Pasola in Wanokaka is more sacred, held in coastal areas, and closely tied to the emergence of nyale (sea worms), while in Lamboya it is more open, inclusive, and celebrated as a lively social festival in the highlands. The cultural values embedded in Pasola include religiosity, togetherness, discipline, leadership, and resilience. These values have great potential to be applied as cultural geography learning resources, as they reflect human-environment interactions, community attachment to place, and the role of tradition in strengthening local identity. This research is expected to contribute to the preservation of local culture and serve as a reference for developing geography learning based on local wisdom and cultural tourism in West Sumba Regency.

The results of the study show that (1) the management system of the Baomata spring area uses local wisdom with mutual cooperation (gemohing) (2) environmental aspects that are managed jointly include maintaining biodiversity, erosion control, and wise land use around the spring area (3) environmental preservation in the spring area in Kiwangona Village in the form of implementing customary rules, reforestation activities, and restrictions on land use. This is done to protect the spring and the forest area around the spring. The conclusion of this study is that joint management based on local wisdom is able to maintain the sustainability of the Baomata spring as the main source of clean water for the Kiwangona Village community, while strengthening social participation in maintaining the ecosystem.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the impact of migration on the economic conditions of former migrant workers in Lakmaras Village, Lamaknen Selatan District, Belu Regency. The study was conducted from February to August 2025 using a quantitative approach. Primary data were obtained through questionnaires, interviews, and observations, while secondary data were collected from supporting documents and literature. The study sample consisted of 71 respondents, determined using the Yamane formula with a 10% margin of error. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive quantitative methods to describe the economic conditions of former migrant workers based on income, employment, education level, and asset ownership. The results indicate that migration has a significant and positive economic impact on former migrant workers. Migration enables them to accumulate assets such as land, houses, and vehicles, which serve as productive capital and improve family welfare. Furthermore, migration opens up opportunities for job diversification and increases household economic capacity. Overall, migration plays a strategic role in wealth formation, improving economic status, and contributing to local economic development. Future research is recommended to use a qualitative approach to deepen understanding of income management strategies and the challenges faced by former migrant workers.

Abstract

The increasing population growth in urban areas has caused problems related to limited residential space. This study aims to analyze the relationship between population density and building density on the availability of residential space in Taubneno Village and Kota Baru Village, Kota Soe District, South Central Timor Regency. This study uses a descriptive method with a quantitative approach through Normalized Difference Built-up Index (NDBI) analysis. Data were obtained through literature studies, Population data collection, remote sensing (Sentinel Imagery and Soe City administrative boundaries), observation, and documentation. Data analysis was carried out to determine the category of population density and building density in each village. The results of the study show that the population density in both villages is classified as High, with Taubneno Village having a larger population, compared to Kota Baru Village. Based on the results of the NBDI analysis, most areas of Taubneno Village are dominated by dense buildings, while Kota Baru Village shows an uneven pattern of building distribution, with dense areas in the center of the Village and sparse areas on the outskirts. These findings indicate a strong relationship between population density and building density, with higher population densities contributing to higher building density. The results of this study are expected to inform sustainable spatial planning in Kota Soe District, South Central Timor Regency.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of changes in rainfall on corn productivity in Kuimasi Village, Kupang Regency. This study uses quantitative methods. The analysis used in this study is simple regression analysis and Pearson Product Moment Correlation Analysis. The data sources used are primary data and secondary data, then the data is collected through documentation and questionnaires. The results of this study show that the variable (X) changes in rainfall have a positive effect on the variable (Y) of corn productivity, which can be seen through the results of a simple linear regression with a Correlation or Relationship (R) value of 0.743. From this output, a coefficient of determination (R square) of 0.552 is obtained, from the variations that occur in corn productivity in Kuimasi Village, Fatuleu District, Kupang Regency. In other words, changes in rainfall contribute 55.2% to changes in corn productivity. While the remaining 44.8% is influenced by other factors outside this research model, such as seed quality, fertilization, soil processing, pest and disease control, and other agroclimatic factors. In this study, rainfall has changed over the past five years, affecting and causing unstable corn productivity.
