Abstract

The image of the police is understood in various ways. In the news, the police are often presented with a negative image. However, there is a tendency for the police to be sanctified as saints in the film. This article attempts to explain the forms of sacralization of police images displayed in cinema. Uses genre analysis to answer the re-search questions. The Police Movie Festival in 2017-2019 was the chosen research object since the Indonesian National Police organize this film festival, it will be seen how they want to be shown in the film. As a result, the Police Movie Festival winners increasingly sanctify the police's image as heroes, patriotic, humanist, and a tolerant and pluralist figure. These images that emerge can obscure that the police also often justify violence when dealing with civilians who are supposed to be the parties they protect.

Abstract

The phenomenon of Korean wave globalization is spreading South Korean culture worldwide. One of them is Indonesia, which entered through the broadcast of Korean dramas to attract attention from visuals, storylines, and interesting accompanying music called K-pop. Having great enthusiasm for K-pop gave rise to a group of fans of the K-pop boy band SEVENTEEN called CARAT. In providing support to SEVENTEEN, CARAT provides support by buying merchandise. K-pop fans' behavior shows their obsession or adoration towards their idols, often called celebrity worship. This type of research is qualitative research with phenomenological methods and an interpretive paradigm approach. Data collection techniques use interviews, documentation, and observation and analyze data through four activities: data collection, data reduction, data display, verification, and conclusion making. The results of this study indicate that the formation of celebrity worship behavior in fans refers to each component stage in celebrity worship, namely Entertainment-social, Intense-personal, and Borderline-pathological, with fantasy behavior that is not excessive. SEVENTEEN fans experience changes in lifestyle by paying more attention to personal appearance, changing mindsets, and strengthening social relationships.

Abstract

Instagram has become a crucial platform for political communication, allowing candidates to connect with voters through visual content and interactions. This study examines the Instagram activity of six candidates in Indonesia’s 2024 Presidential Election—three presidential and three vice-presidential candidates—using content analysis to assess their campaign strategies, audience engagement, and public sentiment. The findings indicate significant variations in social media usage among the candidates. Notably, @prabowo and @gibran_rakabuming posted the least but achieved the highest engagement, suggesting that factors beyond posting frequency—such as algorithmic reach, supporter enthusiasm, and external political dynamics—played a crucial role in visibility and interaction. However, despite high engagement levels, public sentiment toward these candidates on Instagram was predominantly negative, highlighting the complex nature of digital influence. This study underscores Instagram’s dual role as both a mobilization tool and a contested space for political discourse, revealing how the interplay between engagement metrics, sentiment trends, and strategic content choices shapes political narratives in Indonesia’s evolving digital democracy.

Abstract

This research explores the reception of the Malaysian film "Mentega Terbang" among students at Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY). The film has sparked controversy in Malaysia due to its portrayal of elements perceived to be insensitive to Islam, the predominant religion in the country. Using Stuart Hall's encoding/decoding model as a research framework, this study investigates how Indonesian students interpret and engage with the film's themes and controversies. The methodology employed in this research involves qualitative analysis of audience reception. Data was gathered through focus group discussions and individual interviews conducted with UMY students. The findings reveal diverse interpretations among Indonesian students regarding the portrayal of questioning religion during childhood as a common and acceptable theme. Many students argue that such themes should not necessarily provoke controversy but rather reflect everyday experiences and discussions. Overall, this study contributes to understanding how media messages, particularly those involving sensitive cultural and religious themes, are received and interpreted by different audience groups. It underscores the variability in audience perceptions and highlights the importance of context and cultural background in shaping interpretations of media content.
