Abstract

This study aims to analyse the semantic features in fraudulent ads in Facebook. This study is conducted by using two kinds of advertisement which are found in Facebook. The researchers are analyzing the word, sentence, or phrase that suspected as the way to convince the customers by following theory of meaning from Leech (1981). The data that the researchers got showed that the first type of advertisement is emphasized more to the affective and social meaning where the seller leads the customers’ opinion that the seller is a good or trusted person. Moreover, the seller uses prase that include to conceptual meaning to explain the condition or specification of the cellphone in detail.In the second type of advertisement, the element emphasized by the seller is thematic mining by referring to the emphasis of the word used in the advertisement.More over, theresult for identification of fraudulent ads in this study is still dominated by the usual way, such as by looking at the price offered. However, the results of this study can also be used as a consideration in identifying fraudulent ads.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the use of the monitor hypothesis in adult learner. This research is focused on the English spoken language. This study was conducted with descriptive analysis methods. This method was carried out by describing the results of the findings found in the data obtained. In collecting the data, the researcher used observation notes and sound recordings. The results of this study found that the learner was included to the over user monitor. Where he always corrected and was very careful when he wanted to make a sentence. Then, the results of this study also found that the sentence that learner made was always based on his thinking in Indonesian language. In other words, translating Indonesian language into English.

Abstract

Research that analyses critically on claims and additional information on a skincare product is a research that bring the novelty in critical discourse analysis, because the previous study focused on the advertisement or the packaging. Although most skincare products apply this method (using claims and additional information), researchers focus on one of the branded skincare products; Pond’s. The main reason is; this product is already widely known and used by the people in Indonesia. Trough critical discourse analysis model from van Dijk, the researchers discuss three dimensions (text, social cognition and social context) in claims and additional information in some products from Pond’s. There are seven Pond’s products as the data in this study. Besides, researchers used additional data in the form of a survey to five skincare products users. The results of the analysis are; (1) on the text dimension, the general aim is to attract the consumers to choose Pond’s as their skincare products. (2) In social cognition, company show marketing techniques that try to obscure the facts in additional information by using small and separated text. (3) In the social context, the influence of consumers who are easily attracted to a product because of the interesting slogan text makes Pond’s use the hyperbole language

Abstract

As information and communication technology (ICT) plays more important role in recent years, the use of ICT tools and media is more common in learning language. One of ICT media  that is promising for language learning is online games because they facilitate incidental language learning as they inherently form part of reading, listening, speaking, and writing. This case study aims to investigate the opinion of gamers about the use of online game Defense of the Ancient 2 (DoTA 2) to learn language. Data were collected through field observation, semi-structured interview, and documentation. Two participants were interviewed.  The findings of this research is that DoTA 2 supports incidental English language learning because it is easy to use and understand the langauge in the game platform;  the content encourages gamers to use English so that gamers learn new vocabularies and practice their English reading skill while playing; the social interaction through chat room and voice chat in planning strategies encorage gamers to communicate in English; the enjoyment from the motivation to win the game makes gamers practice English in team strategy discussion. However, DoTA 2 only focuses on the action of strategies to win the game rather than intended interaction to learn language.

Abstract

The development of technology brings a good effect on learning English. Some research supports that using technology in learning English increases students' comprehension. However, the fact in the field state that many teachers teach English using conventional methods without technology. On this basis, researchers aimed to examine the perceptions and attitudes of English preservice teachers. This research will be exciting because knowing the current perception of preservice teachers may impact their behavior with technology in the future. In conducting the study, the researchers used a descriptive qualitative method using interviews to obtain data. The criterion used is English education students who study at the higher education level in Sintang. There are 6 (six) students or preservice teachers that the researchers chose as the participants. The result of this research showed that all of the participants think that ICT is important for teaching English. Using ICT in learning can make students understand the material better, making them easier to find information from the material being taught.

Abstract

Innovative learning media is essential in supporting the classroom's English learning process. Its use can increase the students' motivation, which affects the absorption of the material being taught. However, many teachers idolized using only monotonous media for teaching English. Thus, by following this phenomenon, the researchers aim to analyze the use of innovative media in Sintang High School, West Kalimantan. This research is important to know the phenomena that can be the future suggestion to the stakeholder in using media in Sintang because there is no similar research conducted. The method that the researcher used was a qualitative method. Some English teachers from several Senior High Schools were selected based on the purposive sampling method, which is public schools in the district of Sintang. Researchers interviewed the teachers and the students to get the validity. From this interview, the researchers know that the innovative media is needed in English language teaching. It is supported by their teaching experience in using innovative media in the classification of ICT and non-ICT media. however, the use of innovative media in teaching has several obstacles, such as internet connection, teacher ability in using technology and teacher creativity to prepare the media.

Abstract

Instagram is now a worldwide photo and video-sharing social media platform, and English is increasingly used in captions by non-English speaking Instagram users. With this known, this study aimed to determine the students' reason at Universitas Kapuas using English as a caption on Instagram. This study involved 22 students of Universitas Kapuas. The research design used was a qualitative descriptive. Data collection used an interview consisting of five questions. The researchers also used observation to triangulate the data. The results of this study stated that students use English captions on Instagram, which were influenced by intrinsic and extrinsic factors. The results showed that intrinsic factor was the highest. More than 50% of the students or participants used the intrinsic factor in writing English caption. The intrinsic factor included was the need for learning English. While for extrinsic motivation, the respondents mentioned that using English as a caption looks cool and aesthetic.

Abstract

Waste is a significant issue in society, both in Indonesia and globally. The primary challenges are the availability of landfills and the awareness of residents. Jongkong Pasar Village in Kapuas Hulu Regency, West Kalimantan Province, faces similar issues. Consequently, a Zero Waste-themed community service program was implemented to enhance residents' awareness in managing household waste, particularly plastic. This activity took place in January 2024 utilizing the counseling method. As a result, residents' understanding of waste management improved through the implementation of zero waste practices. This fosters great hope that those who were not present will emulate the actions of the participants. Consequently, the waste problem in Jongkong Pasar Village can be addressed promptly.
