Abstract

Glass ionomer cement (GIC) is a restorative material with several advantages such as anti-cariogenic properties, biocompati-bility, and natural colour, but has the disadvantage of poor mechanical properties such as low fracture and brittleness. One ap-proach to overcome these drawbacks is to add hydroxyapatite (HA), which has high biocompatibility and a crystal structure simi-lar to human teeth and bone. Over the past few decades, technological developments have introduced materials that are suita-ble for use in various biomedical applications, especially in dentistry. Research shows that HA, extracted from various natural ma-terials, can improve the mechanical properties of GICs; it also retains unique properties such as fluoride release. Thus, the use of HA as an additive in GICs shows significant potential to improve the performance of these dental restorative materials.

Abstract

Pathogenic bacteria can easily spread through impression materials, especially alginate. One of the chemicals disinfection agents used is hydrogen peroxide and natural disinfection alternatives, such as the decoction of lemongrass leaves. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of immersing Alginate impression in a disinfection solution of lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) and 3% hydrogen peroxide on the dimensional stability. The samples of this research consisted of 27 alginate impression samples of the upper jaw teeth prepared by manipulating alginate powder with water according to the manufacturer’s ratio and a lemongrass solution prepared by boiling 300 grams of lemongrass leaves 3000 ml of distilled water to obtain 300ml of lemongrass leaf decoction. The 27 samples were divided into three groups: the control group soaked in aquadest, one group soaked in 3% hydrogen peroxide, and one group soaked in 10% lemongrass decoction. The dimensional stability was measured by using a caliper for the horizontal dimension and then analyzed by using the Kruskal-Wallis test. This statistical analysis found a p-value of <0.05 in the horizontal dimension, indicating a difference in the horizontal dimensional stability of the alginate impression after immersion among the hydrogen peroxide, lemongrass leaves (C. citratus), and control groups. Further comparisons among the groups by using the Mann-Whitney Test resulted in a p-value of <0.05 for all the comparisons among the horizontal dimension of the groups. The dimensional changes of the alginate impression were slightly larger in the immersion of 10% lemongrass solution compared to the 3% hydrogen peroxide solution.

Abstract

Bone graft is a tissue capable of promoting new bone formation, transplanted into damaged bone, either alone or in combination with other materials. From marine biodiversity, marine sponge can be one of the options as a biological material for bone graft uti-lisation. This review discusses the potential of marine sponge as bone graft in the formation of bone regeneration. Through sys-tematic review, articles were searched through PubMed, MDPI and Google Scholar databases and analysed. In total, 370 arti-cles were obtained from the initial search, but only 15 articles met the inclusion criteria, which showed the positive effect of ma-rine sponge in bone regeneration. It was concluded that marine sponge has great potential as a bone graft in the formation of bone regeneration, especially when combined with other biomaterials that have proven effective as graft materials.

Abstract

Dental impressioning aims to produce accurate moulds of teeth and oral tissues. Impression materials and moulds must meet cri-teria such as precision, non-toxicity, and adequate setting time. Selecting the appropriate impression material is crucial for pro-ducing accurate and high-quality dental prostheses. This study discusses various types of impression materials, both elastic and non-elastic, and identifies the most effective materials for making dental prostheses. Polyvinylsiloxane (PVS) is the most widely used and most accurate impression material compared to others, as PVS has high dimensional stability, superior accuracy, and good elastic recovery. It is concluded that ongoing education and training on materials and impression techniques are essential to achieve optimal results.
