Abstract

Prevention of dental caries in children can be done with topical fluoride as well as pit and fissure sealant. Topical fluoride application followed by pit and fissure sealant is still controversial because it allegedly could impair the bond between pit and fissure sealant materials to the teeth, so that it can lead to microleakage. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of 5% NaF and 1.23% APF on microleakage of RMGIC and flowable composite as pit and fissure sealant materials. Thirty extracted premolars were prepared and then divided into three groups: without topical fluoride, with application of 5% NaF (Enamelast, USA), and with application of 1.23% APF (60 Second Taste, USA); then filled using RMGIC (GC Fuji II LC, Japan) and flowable composite (Esthet.Xflow, USA). The teeth were soaked in methylene blue and then cut buccolingually. Microleakage was observed using stereomicroscope and scored in an ordinal scale. The Kruskal-Wallis test on RMGIC groups was not significant, while in the flowable composite groups was significant (p <0.05). Mann-Whitney test showed a significant difference between the RMGIC and flowable composite groups after application of 1.23% APF. It can be concluded that microleakage of pit and fissure sealant using a flowable composite was higher than RMGIC after application of 1.23% APF.

Abstract

Introduction: Patients with full edentulism experience difficulties in chewing food, thus requiring complete dentures aiming to restore the missing teeth, other structures, and the patient's masticatory efficiency. Complete denture fabrication requires retention, stability and support of the remaining tissues. This is influenced by the selection of a good occlusion concept. There are several types of occlusion concepts such as Bilateral Balanced Occlusion (BBO), Lingualized Occlusion (LO) and Canine Guided Occlusion (CGO). Purpose: The aim of this literature review was to determine the use of the ideal occlusion concept in complete dentures according to the patient's condition. Methods: Literature was selected using the databases PubMed, Science Direct, Wiley Online Library, Elsevier, and Google Scholar from January 2007 to December 2022. Articles that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were assessed using the Cochrane Collaboration Tool for bias assessment and summarized to obtain data on occlusion concept for fabricating full denture. Results: Fourteen randomized controlled trial journals discussing about three occlusion concepts that are BBO, LO and CGO were included in this literature review. Occlusal concept should be used according to the indication and condition of the patient. Conclusion: Occlusion concepts give positive impact if chosen wisely according to the patient's condition.

Abstract

Introduction: Cuka pempek is a typical Palembang food that contains acid as one of its ingredients. Continuous consumption of cuka pempek can affect the surface roughness of hot polymerized acrylic resin denture bases due to its ability to absorb liquids. Purpose: To determine the effect of acid types in cuka pempek on the surface roughness of hot polymerized acrylic resin denture bases. Methods: Thirty plates of hot polymerized acrylic resin measuring 65mm x 10mm x 2,5mm were divided into 3 groups. The initial surface roughness value (pretest) was calculated using a surface roughness tester. Soaking was carried out on group I (tamarind-based cuka pempek), group II (vinegar acid-based cuka pempek), and group III (control) with distilled water. Soaking was carried out for 30 hours in an incubator at 37°C. Measurement of the final surface roughness (post-test) was carried out. Results: The results of the normality test with the Shapiro-Wilk and the Levene test homogeneity test showed that the data were found to be normally distributed and homogenous. The paired t-test showed significant differences in all groups. The results of the one-way ANOVA test showed a significant difference. The results of the Bonferroni post hoc test showed a significant difference between tamarind-based and vinegar acid-based cuka pempek against distilled water, while there was no significant difference between tamarind-based and vinegar acid-based cuka pempek. Conclusion: There is an effect of the type of acid in cuka pempek on the surface roughness of the hot polymerized acrylic resin denture base.

Abstract

Background: A Fixed Partial Denture (FPD) is a permanent prosthesis cemented to abutment teeth using luting cement. One of the most common complications is retention loss, which is closely related to the type and properties of the cementation material used. Objective: This narrative review aims to analyze the characteristics of luting cements to determine the ideal material for cementing FPDs. Methods: A literature review was conducted using articles from PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar databases published within the last 15 years. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied, and the selected studies were assessed for bias using the Checklist for Reporting In-vitro Studies (CRIS). Results: A total of 21 in vitro studies were reviewed. Sixteen studies reported that resin cement has the highest retention. Ten studies supported the use of zinc phosphate (ZP), zinc polycarboxylate (ZPC), glass ionomer cement (GIC), and resin cement for all-metal FPDs. Six studies favored resin cement for all-ceramic FPDs, while four studies showed positive outcomes using resin cement for porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) FPDs. Conclusion: Resin cement demonstrates superior retention characteristics, making it the ideal luting agent for FPDs. ZP, ZPC, and GIC also provide good performance for all-metal FPDs. In contrast, resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC) shows inferior retention and is less recommended for FPD cementation.

Abstract

Background: Hot polymerized acrylic resin is the most commonly used denture base material. Surface hardness is an important mechanical property of acrylic resin to resist abrasion of the denture base during routine cleaning procedures. Celery leaf juice at 50% concentration is effective as a denture cleaner. The ideal denture cleaning solution has bactericidal and fungicidal properties, is easy to use, and does not damage the materials used in making the denture. Objective: This study aims to determine the effect of celery leaf juice (Apium graveolens Linn.) on the surface hardness of hot polymerized acrylic resin denture bases. Methods: This study was a laboratory experimental study with a pre-test and post-test with control group research design. A total of 24 hot polymerized acrylic resin samples measuring 65mm x 10mm x 2.5mm were divided into 4 groups, namely 50% concentration celery leaf juice, 75% concentration celery leaf juice, alkaline peroxide, and distilled water which were immersed for 5 days. Surface hardness was measured with Vicker's Hardness Tester. Statistical tests were performed with paired T-test, One Way ANOVA parametric test and Post hoc LSD test. Results: The paired T-test showed that 3 groups, namely celery leaf juice 50% concentration, celery leaf juice 75% concentration, and alkaline peroxide had a significant decrease in surface hardness (p<0.05). Conclusion: There is an effect of celery leaf juice (Apium graveolens Linn.) on the surface hardness of hot polymerized acrylic resin denture bases. However, the hardness value is still within the tolerance limit according to ANSI/ADA specification No. 12. Keywords: hardness, celery leaf juice, hot polymerization acrylic resin
