Abstract

A smile is a human facial feature that is attractive and one of the forms of human communication and expression. An esthetic smile is determined by several factors such as the shape, position, and color of the teeth, as well as the condition of the frenulum labialis. Aberrant frenulum labialis can be treated by performing a frenectomy. Properly diagnosing and planning the management of aberrant frenulum must be done to achieve satisfactory results both in healing and aesthetics. This literature review is a compilation of an overview of the frenulum and its classification of attachments, indications and contraindications for frenectomy, and various techniques of frenectomy.

Abstract

Shade matching of multi-shade dental resin nano-composite is a process that requires time and operator expertise. Single-shade universal composite resin claimed to match all tooth colors to simplify the process. Comprehensive testing, including an assessment of surface hardness, is needed to evaluate the properties of this relatively new single-shade universal composite and to evaluate the surface hardness of single-shade universal composite compared to multi-shade dental resin nano-composite. This experimental study tested two composite restorative materials: single-shade universal composite (Omnichroma, Tokuyama Dental, Japan) and nanofilled composite resin (FiltekTM Z350 XT, 3M/ESPE, USA). Thirty specimens divided into 2 groups (n=15) were fabricated by placing the composites into a stainless steel mold (2 mm thick × 12 mm diameter) and photoactivated for 20 seconds, followed by finishing and polishing. Surface hardness was evaluated using a Vickers hardness testing machine and a diamond indenter with a load of 1000 g applied for 15 seconds. Data were analyzed by using an independent t-test. The mean surface hardness of single-shade universal and multi-shade dental resin nano-composite were 21.04±4,92 and 19.33±5,61 Vickers hardness number (VHN), respectively. Single-shade universal composite showed no significant difference in surface hardness to multi-shade dental resin nano-composite (p-value > 0.05). The surface hardness value of single-shade universal composite resin was comparable to multi-shade dental resin nano-composite.

Abstract

The development of restorative materials presents a universal single-shade resin composite claimed to match all tooth colors. In addition to aesthetics, composite resin must have good mechanical properties. The temperature factor affects the polymerization, which will affect the compressive strength. The purpose of study was to investigate the effect of preheating on the compressive strength of single-shade universal resin composite. Universal single-shade resin composite was used to make cylindrical specimens with a diameter of 3 mm and a thickness of 6 mm and divided into two groups: with and without preheating (n=9). Specimens of preheating groups were prepared by heating the resin composite in a heater device at 600C for 15 minutes, then placed in the mold and irradiated using a light curing unit with an intensity of 2300 mW/cm for 6 seconds and then polished using composite polishing kits. The compressive strength was tested using a universal testing machine. The data obtained were analyzed using an independent t-test. The result of study showed the mean compressive strength values were significantly higher in the preheated group than in the non-preheated group (p0.05). The conclusion of this study was preheating universal single-shade resin composite to 60 degrees Celsius significantly enhances its compressive strength.

Abstract

Curcuma zedoaria is known to have antibacterial and antifungal activity, and have the potential to be used as an irrigation solution in endodontic treatment. Endodontic irrigant that is going to be used clinically has to go through a series of research, to ensure effectiveness and safety without adverse side effects. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of extracts of C. zedoaria with concentrations of 5%, 10%, and 20% as endodontic irrigation on the expression of the proinflammatory cytokine TNF-α on Wistar rat. This experimental study used extracts of C.zedoaria with concentrations of 5%, 10%, 20%, as tested groups, 5.25% sodium hypochlorite as the positive control, and saline solution as a negative control group. Thirty male adult Wistar rats (Rattus novergicus) with an average weight of 150-200 g were included in this study. The dermis of each rat was marked with a circle and 0.1 ml of each irrigant was injected subcutaneously by using a syringe. The evaluation was made 14 days after injection. The expression of cytokine TNF-α was assessed with the IHC method. The percentage of TNF-α expression was evaluated and analyzed by using One-way Anova followed by Tukey Post Hoc test. The results of this study revealed that the highest percentage of TNF-α expression is positive control group (5.25% NaOCl). Furthermore, the higher the concentration of C. zedoaria extract, the greater the percentage of TNF-α expression. One-way Anova results showed that there was a significant difference between groups (p ≤ 0.05). From the results of the Tukey test, it was found there was a significant difference between groups except between the negative control group and the 5% extract group. It can be concluded that C. zedoaria extract 10 and 20% can increase TNF-α expression, but its ability is lower than sodium hypochlorite.

Abstract

Background: A Fixed Partial Denture (FPD) is a permanent prosthesis cemented to abutment teeth using luting cement. One of the most common complications is retention loss, which is closely related to the type and properties of the cementation material used. Objective: This narrative review aims to analyze the characteristics of luting cements to determine the ideal material for cementing FPDs. Methods: A literature review was conducted using articles from PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar databases published within the last 15 years. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied, and the selected studies were assessed for bias using the Checklist for Reporting In-vitro Studies (CRIS). Results: A total of 21 in vitro studies were reviewed. Sixteen studies reported that resin cement has the highest retention. Ten studies supported the use of zinc phosphate (ZP), zinc polycarboxylate (ZPC), glass ionomer cement (GIC), and resin cement for all-metal FPDs. Six studies favored resin cement for all-ceramic FPDs, while four studies showed positive outcomes using resin cement for porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) FPDs. Conclusion: Resin cement demonstrates superior retention characteristics, making it the ideal luting agent for FPDs. ZP, ZPC, and GIC also provide good performance for all-metal FPDs. In contrast, resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC) shows inferior retention and is less recommended for FPD cementation.

Abstract

Introduction: Hard liner is a denture relining material which can be used directly at the chairside in brief time. The characteristic of the hardliner is its susceptibility towards porosity which consequently resulting biofilm accumulation and Candida albicans colonization. Thus, there is a need for denture cleaning. Alkaline peroxide is a type of denture cleanser which is widely used, but it could affect the physical properties of hard liner. One of the traditional ingredients that have the potential to be used as an alternative to denture cleanser is cinnamon. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of different types of denture cleansers on the surface roughness of hard liner. Method: Twelve cylindrical hard liner specimens (15mm x 10mm, ASTM: D-2240 64T) were divided into three groups: group I (immersed in distilled water), group II (immersed in alkaline peroxide) and group III (immersed in 1.5% extract cinnamon). All specimens were soaked for 15 minutes/day for 7 days. Surface roughness was measured using surface roughness tester (Handysurf E-MC-S24B Japan). Data were analysed using one-way ANOVA and post hoc Bonferroni (α=0.05). Results: The highest average of surface roughness was shown on specimens immersed in alkaline peroxide, followed by specimens immersed in 1.5% cinnamon extract and distilled water, respectively. There were a significant difference in surface roughness values in all groups (p<0.05). Conclusion: There is an effect of type of denture cleanser on the surface hardness of hard liner.
