Abstract

Identification of water quality before fish farming is needed to determine the characteristics of water as a medium for freshwater fish cultivation. This study investigated water quality parameters for pH, temperature, Dissolve Oxygen (DO), Total Dissolved Solid (TDS), types and abundance of phytoplankton and zooplankton in the conservation area of PT PHE Raja Tempirai, Penukal Abab Lematang Ilir Regency (PALI), South Sumatra. Water samples were collected from four stations with codes A0, D1 and D2 in the form of earthen ponds and A1, a tributary of the Muara Air Itam river and ex-situ analyzed at laboratory of aquaculture study program, Sriwijaya University and Center for Environmental Health and Disease Control Engineering (BTKLPP) Class I Palembang. All stations have categories very suitable for DO (>6 mg/L) and temperature (29-32 °C) parameters. Station A1 is categorized as less feasible at pH and TDS (5.06±0.72 and 6.80±0.00 mg/L), stations D1 and D2 are suitable for cultivation at pH parameters (6.36±0.11 and 6.71±0.17), and less feasible at TDS (38.63±0.03 mg/L and 34.50±1.90 mg/L). While at station A0 it is very possible on all parameters, but phytoplankton of the genus Peridinium at this station dominate, so in the future, it is necessary to mitigate the abundance of this type of phytoplankton to avoid water quality degradation, especially in different seasons.

Abstract

ABSTRACTReproduction enhancement of climbing perch from reared inland water in the controlled environment has done successfully to generate its broodstocks and offsprings. This species is potential to create the sustainability production in the future because they offer a promising price, so it needs a further study for optimizing the quality of broodstock and its offsprings. This study aimed to analyze the reproduction of female broodstocks from various family F1 and F2 by adding multiple dietary supplements in the different dose. The research was conducted on Fish Hatchery Unit Mulia Plaju, Palembang for three months and biology laboratory in Agriculture Faculty, University of Muhammadiyah Palembang. The research method used completely randomized design with three replications, began by rearing the female broodstock (F1 and F2) with adding dietary supplement for three treatments, they were P1: vitamin E (250 mg/kg dietary weight), P2: vitamin C (125 mg/kg dietary weight), and P3: Spirulina sp. (10% / dietary weight). Then, for each female broodstock from F1 and F2 of every treatment was selected for breeding with ratio two females (♀) (F1 & F2) : male F1 (♂). The research showed that reproduction performance of F2 was better than F1 in broodstock growth, fecundity, egg diameter, and larvae growth parameter, but it had low fertility than F1. Adding supplement of vitamin E to female broodstock resulted in a better productivity performance than the vitamin C and Spirulina sp.. Abstract

Chitala lopis, also known as giant featherback, is a fully protected fish species on Indonesian official list due to the susceptibility to exploitation. Several studies showed that the conservation of aquatic resources, such as giant featherback, could be achieved through the implementation of fish farming practices and optimization of feed use. Therefore, this study aimed to determine effect of different feeding rate on growth pattern, performance, and condition factor of the first generation of giant featherback. The first generation of fish was collected from the natural reproduction of broodstock in the earthen ponds. A total of 5 samples were then randomly divided into three treatment groups and reared in the nine net cages installed in the earthen pond. The stocking density in each group was three fish per cage, and the treatments were carried out in triplicates. Feed given comprised fish bycatch as control (T0) (5% of the total weight) and freshwater shrimp, Caridina sp. with two different feeding rates, namely 5% (T1) and 7% (T2) of the total weight. The mean initial weight of all the samples in this study was 41 3.85 g. The results showed that the highest survival and absolute growth rates (29.96.38 g, 78 11%) were obtained in T1, but were not significantly different (p0.05). Furthermore, the highest average relative growth rate was also found in T1 (76.2818.61%) and significantly different compared to other treatments (p0.05). Growth pattern of fish at the beginning of the experiment was negative allometric (0.54), showing a low correlation (0.03), but became positive allometric (4.17) at the end, with moderate correlation (0.66). The results also showed that the highest condition factor was obtained in T2 (0.780.03), and there was a significant effect (p0.05). Based on the results, Caridina sp. had a positive and significant impact on the weight growth of the first generation of giant featherback compared to other studies. Keywords:CultivationFeeding rateGiant featherbackCaridina sp.Rasbora sp.
