Abstract

This study aims to analyze the narrative structure of the main character in the film Hajjan using the actantial model and the functional structure proposed by A.J.Greimas. This Saudi Arabian film, released in 2023, has been screened at various festival and in several countries, including Canada, Saudi Arabia, the United States and Germany. The film tells the story of Matar, a Bedouin teenager who strives to continue his deceased brother’s struggle and save his beloved camel through the competitive and conflict-ridden world of camel racing. This his study employs a qualitative descriptive method using Greimas’s semiotic approach. Data was collected through observation and note-taking, specifically by repeatedly watching the film’s dialogues and scenes and then recording relevant data using the actantial model and functional structure. The results indicate that the film’s narrative is constructed through Matar’s journey toward achieving his goals, which evolve alongside the plot. This study confirms that the film functions not only as entertainment but also as a narrative work built through characters, conflicts, and the achievement of goals that shape the story’s meaning

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the sources of interpretation, general and specific methods used by as-Sayyid Muhammad Husain Thabāthaba’i in the book al-Mizan fi Tafsir al-Quran especially in the interpretation of Surah Al-Al-Qari’ah. This research is a qualitative study with a descriptive method, using primary data from the Tafsir book and secondary data from related books and scientific articles. Tafsir al-Mizan is a phenomenal work of Muhammad Husain Thabāthaba’i. Even so, the Tafsir uses the uslub of the Qur'an bil Qur'an and also contains many opinions of other commentators. So that the Tafsir is called a very complete Tafsir because it contains many fields of science. The special manhaj or method of writing Tafsir al-Mizan is to interpret the book sequentially in the mushafy, explaining the general picture and purpose of the letter or verse being interpreted, when interpreting a particular letter or verse citing the opinions of Al-Qur'an reviewers and also explaining their own opinions, having a separate section on the discussion of narrations, specializing in the discussion of philosophical aspects, and providing a general conclusion from the verse or letter being studied.

Abstract

The film Souad (2021) by Ayten Amin represents the complexity of young Egyptian women's lives caught between patriarchal cultural demands and the expansion of digital space. This study aims to describe the narrative structure of Souad through Algirdas Julien Greimas's narrative semiotic approach, encompassing the actantial scheme, functional structure, and spatial-temporal isotopy. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method with documentation techniques based on repeated observation of the film, scene recording, and analysis grounded in Greimas's actantial model. The findings show that the film contains two interconnected actantial trajectories: that of Souad and that of Rabab. Souad functions as the subject seeking recognition, validation, and an ideal identity through social media, yet fails due to the pressure of the family's socio-religious norms and an unfulfilling virtual relationship. Rabab, by contrast, emerges as a new subject who continues the plot with the goal of uncovering the cause of her sister's death through a direct meeting with Ahmed. This subject shift constitutes the narrative's distinctive feature, departing from the conventional actantial pattern. Social media functions simultaneously as an adjuvant and as a space that produces identity conflict, while spatial and temporal isotopy reveals the tension between the protagonist's real and digital lives. The findings indicate that Souad critiques the limited space for women's expression within patriarchal society through a complex narrative structure.
