Abstract

Local religions in Indonesia are generally perceived as culture, not religion. The local religious tradition that existed before the world religion was seen as something with a profane dimension, not sacred. As a result, the divine dimension of local religion is denied. This ethnographic research aims to reveal the divinity dimension of local religion by taking a case study of the local religion of Sunda Wiwitan in Cigugur, Kuningan, West Java. The divine dimension of Sunda Wiwitan can be found in a special way in the entire series of Seren Taun ceremonies, namely the thanksgiving ceremony for the harvest as well as the Sunda Wiwitan religious holiday. In prayers, sacred places and times, ritual materials, music, songs and mantras, ceremonial clothing, performers, and sacred figures all manifest the existence of a supernatural figure (God). The dimension of divinity depicted in the local Sunda Wiwitan religion is very relevant and significant for developing an inclusive and appreciative attitude towards the diversity of religious traditions in Indonesia. With it, the promotion of peace and inter-religious harmony is also possible to construct.

Abstract

Abstract The stigma against local religions as heretical teachings and non-official state religion has resulted in their existence being always faced various existential challenges.  It is the experience of the local religion of Sunda Wiwitan in Cigugur, Kuningan, West Java, the case study of this research. It was forced to disband twice in the past. It was a tragic event that Sunda Wiwitan did not expect again. Therefore, the local religion which was formerly known as the Javanese Sundanese Religion (ADS) must find the appropriate strategy for its existence in order to survive. This ethnographic study describes the significance of the Sérén Taun ceremony for the existence of Sunda Wiwitan. The thanksgiving ceremony for the harvest, for Sunda Wiwitan, is not just a cultural representation of the Sundanese agrarian society.  It is mainly as a strategy for survival, a medium for criticism and resistance, as well as a form of public communication regarding its existence. The ceremony, which is full of moral and cultural values from the Sundanese ethnic community, is a way of how Sunda Wiwitan is inclusive of the socio-cultural life in which it is located. The state's appreciation of Sérén Taun by making it an Intangible Cultural Heritage and the involvement of the community in every Sérén Taun ceremony is a sign that Sunda Wiwitan is increasingly being recognized and appreciated. Now the Sérén Taun ceremony is a prototype of how other local religions can survive by exploring and strengthening their roots, namely culture.

Abstract

This paper examines human integrity from the perspective of local religion of Sunda Wiwitan in Cigugur, Kuningan, West Java, Indonesia. We collected research data  using qualitative research strategies through in-depth interviews, participant  observation, and literature research. The complexity of humanity is explored and  internalized by various groups, including indigenous peoples. Human integrity occurs when there is unity between the physical and spiritual aspects. The physicaland spiritual aspects of a healthy and harmonious human being are a marker for humanity that is human (homo humanum) and even has a divine dimension (homo religious). The core of the construction of human integrity in the Sunda Wiwitan Religious Ethics is when there is an attitude of “silih”, or “saling”, i.e, reciprocated acts of kindness toward each other. This attitude is further described as an attitude or behavior of making each other fragrant or silih wangi. This means that humans (must) protect each other’s reputation and do well to others, and that they are motivated to eliminate each other’s weaknesses or shortcomings; humans show themutual behavior of silih asah (meaning that humans educate one another, are willing to share knowledge, understanding, and skills); humans show a mutual caring behavior or silih asuh (humans protect one another, give to each other, help each other in need and distress); humans love one another or showing the behavior of silih asih. This local wisdom related to Sunda Wiwitan humanism is increasingly relevant for today’s global society in reflecting on the meaning and essence of humanity.Â
