Abstract

This study analyzes the use of deixis in Mark Zuckerberg’s testimony in the United States Congress, focusing on how deictic expressions contribute to meaning, positioning, and speaker-hearer relations in political discourse. Deixis, a central concept in pragmatics, refers to words and phrases such as pronouns, temporal expressions, and spatial indicators that require contextual information for interpretation. This research employed a qualitative descriptive method with a pragmatic approach. The primary data for this research consists of video recordings of Mark Zuckerberg’s congressional hearings in Youtube channel. The utterances of Mark Zuckerberg and Senators became the object of the research to be investigated. The findings show that the deictic markers employed during testimony in Congress categorized into three types; they are personal, temporal, and spatial deixis. Zuckerberg and Senators skillfully employs deixis to construct an image of accountability, collaboration, and respect, while subtly shifting responsibility through strategic pronoun use. By examining how deixis functions in Zuckerberg’s testimony, the research contributes to broader insights in political linguistics, discourse analysis, and pragmatics.

Abstract

This study aims to assess the concept of cooperation by analyzing the dialogue among characters in the Wild Robot movie. Since words, phrases, and sentences would be utilized to explain the data, a descriptive qualitative method was employed for analysis. The quantitative approach yields descriptive data, specifically in the form of phrases or words that succinctly explain the findings of the conducted research. The data consists of conversational fragments that obey cooperative principle's maxim. The source of data is derived from the dialogue of the characters in the film About Time. The researcher employed non-participatory note-taking techniques and the observational approach to get the data. The outcomes of the analysis of the cooperative principle performed by the characters in the movie is described in this study using a qualitative methodology. To analyze the data, the pragmatic identity technique was utilized. The results demonstrated that the dialogue in the film About Time contained all four of the cooperation principle's maxim. The investigator discovered 19 maxims.  According to the results, there were 2 (11%) data maxim of manner, 5 (26%) data maxims of quality, 7 (37%) data maxims of relation, and 5 (26%) data maxims of quantity. In conclusion, the maxim of the maxim of relation included the most data. The maxim of manner had the least amount of data.

Abstract

Penamaan jalan di suatu daerah memiliki nilai historis dan makna yang berbeda berdasarkan pandangan masyarakat di sekitarnya.  Toponimi menjadi bagian penting dalam kehidupan manusia sebagai bagian dari proses pembentukan identitas. Nama jalan atau wilayah merupakan warisan kebudayaan dalam bentuk data kebahasaan yang mengandung pengetahuan local yang perlu diwariskan pada generasi berikutnya. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendokumentasikan penamaan jalan di Kelurahan Lalolara di Kota Kendari. Penelitian etnolinguistik ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Data penelitian berasal dari informan melalui teknik catat dan simak libat cakap yaitu peneliti terlibat langsung dalam wawancara dengan informan. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, nama-nama jalan dan Lorong di Kelurahan Lalolara diklasifikasikan menjadi tiga aspek, yaitu ditinjau dari aspek perwujudan, aspek kemsyarakatan, dan aspek kebudayaan. Toponimi nama jalan ditinjau dari aspek perwujudan adalah Jalan Evolusi, Jalan Mata Air, Jalan Kawat, Lorong Pelangi, Lorong Beringin, Lorong Pelindung, dan Lorong Mata Air 1. Sedangkan ditinjau dari aspek kemasyarakatan, toponimi jalan di Kelurahan Lalolara terdiri dari Jalan Tridarma, Jalan Damai, Lorong Salangga, Lorong Kencana, Lorong Olala dan Jalan Mangkerey. Dari aspek kebudayaan, toponimi jalan di Kelurahan Lalolara terdiri dari Lorong Toritale dan Lorong Anawai.

Abstract

Anak-anak zaman sekarang dimanjakan dengan berbagai jenis permainan yang berasal dari genjet. Permainan tradisional yang selama ini menjadi hiburan masyarakat kini digantikan oleh permainan moderen. Kondisi ini berdampak pada hilangnya berbagai macam permainan tradisional yang ada di masyarakat. Kondisi ini menjadi pemicu hilangnya kosa kata bahasa Bugis dalam lingkup permainan tradisional. Berdasarkan hal itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menginventarisasi dan mendeskripsikan istilah-istilah permainan tradisional pada masyarakat bugis.  Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah deskriptif kualitatif. Data dalam penelitian ini berupa istilah-istilah yang ada dalam permainan tradisional masyarakat Bugis. Berdasarkan hasil analisis data, ditemukan berbagai istilah dalam permainan tradisional yang terdapat dalam permainan tradisional manggulanceng/congklak, permainan tradisional maggasing, permainan tradisional elang-elang, permainan tradisional talamba, permainan tradisional mappadendang, permainan tradisional gobak sodor, permainan tradisional macukke, dan permainan tradisional enggo-enggo. Berdasarkan hasil analisis data, dapat disimpulkan bahwa kekayaan kosa kata dalam permainan tradisional merupakan sesuatu yang khas yang tidak ditemukan dalam permainan moderen. Oleh karena itu, kekayaan tersebut perlu dilestarikan melalui infentarisasi istilah-istilah permainan tradisional dalam bentuk penelitian.

Abstract

Kegiatan “Pelatihan Penyusunan dan Submission Artikel pada Jurnal Nasional bagi Mahasiswa Sastra Indonesia Fakultas Ilmu Budaya Universitas Halu Oleo” berawal dari permasalahan kurangnya pengetahuan mahasiswa tentang penyusunan dan submissioan pada jurnal nasional. Kondisi di lapangan menunjukkan bahwa masih banyak mahasiswa Sastra Indonesia yang belum mampu Menyusun artikel ilmiah untuk diterbitkan pada jurnal nasional. Berdasarkan kondisi tersebut, kegiatan ini dilaksanakan dengan tujuan untuk meningkatkan pemahaman dan keterampilan mahasiswa dalam menyusun serta mengirimkan artikel ilmiah sesuai dengan standar jurnal nasional. Pelatihan ini dilaksanakan sebagai upaya mendukung penguatan budaya menulis dan publikasi ilmiah di kalangan mahasiswa, khususnya di Program Studi Sastra Indonesia. Kegiatan pelatihan diawali dengan pemaparan materi mengenai konsep dasar penulisan artikel ilmiah, meliputi struktur artikel, kaidah kebahasaan akademik, serta ketentuan teknis yang berlaku pada jurnal nasional. Selanjutnya, peserta diberikan penjelasan mengenai proses registrasi dan submission artikel melalui sistem jurnal berbasis daring. Pada sesi ini, pemateri memandu peserta secara langsung mulai dari pembuatan akun, pengisian metadata, hingga pengunggahan naskah artikel. Pelatihan berlangsung secara interaktif dengan melibatkan diskusi dan praktik langsung, sehingga peserta dapat memahami materi secara komprehensif. Melalui kegiatan ini, mahasiswa memperoleh tambahan wawasan dan keterampilan praktis yang dapat meningkatkan kepercayaan diri dalam menulis serta mempublikasikan karya ilmiah. Secara keseluruhan, pelatihan ini memberikan manfaat yang signifikan bagi peserta, baik dari segi peningkatan pengetahuan maupun keterampilan akademik. Kegiatan ini diharapkan dapat mendorong mahasiswa untuk lebih produktif dalam menghasilkan artikel ilmiah dan berkontribusi pada peningkatan kualitas publikasi akademik di lingkungan Fakultas Ilmu Budaya Universitas Halu Oleo.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the type of satirical language style in the comment column of Azizah Salsha's Instagram account. This study uses the theory of Gorys Keraf, with a qualitative descriptive research method. The data of this research is in the form of comments from netizens in the comment column of Azizah Salsha's Instagram. The collection of research data was carried out using reading techniques and documentation. The results of the study showed that the types of satirical language styles of netizens in the comment column of Azizah Salsha's Instagram account on September 2 - September 9, 2024, found 3 (three) types of sarcastic language styles, namely irony, cynicism, and sarcasm. The results of the analysis contained 38 (thirty-eight) data, namely 1 (one) style of irony language, 17 (seventeen) styles of cynicism language, and 20 (twenty) styles of sarcasm language.

Abstract

Language not only functions as a means of conveying information, but also reflects social attitudes, cultural values, and norms of politeness in human interactions. In the context of education, especially in elementary schools, polite language is an important aspect because it plays a role in shaping the character and social skills of students. This study aims to describe the forms of violations of linguistic politeness maxims and the factors behind them in verbal interactions at SMP Negeri 10 Kendari. This study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. The research data consists of verbal statements obtained from interactions between teachers and students, students and students, and students and other school officials. Data analysis was conducted using a pragmatic approach based on Leech's politeness principle theory, specifically the maxims of wisdom, praise, and sympathy. The results show that violations of politeness in language still frequently occur in everyday communication in the school environment. Violations of the maxim of wisdom are evident in students' speech when they complain or make demands to teachers and canteen staff in an impolite manner. Violations of the maxim of praise are evident in the use of harsh, demeaning, and insulting words among students, such as ridicule and sarcasm, which can threaten the self-esteem of the addressee. Meanwhile, violations of the maxim of sympathy are seen in students' lack of empathy towards friends who are experiencing difficulties, which are instead responded to with ridicule. These violations have the potential to trigger conflict and damage social harmony in schools. Therefore, this study recommends the need to continuously instill the value of polite language through teacher role modeling and habituation in the learning process in order to create a polite, harmonious, and character-building school environment

Abstract

This study investigates deixis in selected songs from Rosé’s Rosie album by identifying deictic types and analyzing their pragmatic functions. Five songs, namely Number One Girl, Toxic Till the End, Two Years, Drinks or Coffee, and APT, were intentionally chosen for their rich emotional content and contextual diversity. The research shows that deixis serves as a discourse strategy that creates emotional closeness, narrative viewpoint, and interpersonal bonds in modern song lyrics. Using a descriptive, qualitative approach with a pragmatic focus, data collection involved stages such as selecting songs, identifying deictic expressions, coding, and interpretive analysis. Results identified five types of deixis: person, spatial, temporal, social, and discourse. A total of 119 expressions were found: 68 person, 17 spatial, 19 temporal, 8 social, and seven discourse deixis. Person deixis is most prominent, indicating the singer’s personal engagement and emotional perspective as they portray love, loss, and relationships. Overall, the findings emphasize the vital role of deixis in shaping meaning, emotional depth, and interpersonal connections in song lyrics.

Abstract

Penelitian ini mengkaji fenomena kebahasaan mengenai semantik prototipe pada kata senjata. Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh subjektivitas masyarakat Kendari dalam dalam mengungkapkan kata senjata berdasarkan konsep yang ada dalam benaknya. Metode penelitian ini melalui pendekatan deskriptif kualitatif dan kuantitatif yang dilaksanakan melalui tahap pengumpulan data, analisis data, dan penyajian hasil analisis data. Data didapatkan melalui kuisoner yang memuat sepuluh variabel tentang konsep senjata. Data tersebut kemudian dianalisis dengan memanfaatkan kajian semantik prototipe. Data yang telah dianalisis selanjutnya disajikan dengan menggunakan metode formal dan informal. Berdasarkan hasil analisis data, penulis menemukan beberapa prototipe yang dapat digunakan untuk mengkategorikan sesuatu sebagai senjata. pengkategorian itu dibagi menjadi dua variabel yaitu variabel alat dan variabel fungsi. Fungsi yang dimaksud disini terbagi dua yaitu untuk melindungi dan untuk melukai. Jawaban responden menujukan bahwa variabel untuk melindung yang paling berpengaruh dalam pengkategorian senjata. Dengan demikian, sesuatu dikategorikan sebagai senjata apabila fungsinya untuk melidungi diri dari segala sesuatu yang dapat membahayakan diri.

Abstract

Investigating mental process is highly significant because it provides a framework for understanding how language represents human experiences involving the cognitive and emotional activities of the mind. The research aims to describe the implicit senser and phenomenon as a clause structure in mental process found in the main character in the Horse Girl movie. The researchers used descriptive qualitative as the research method. The data are taken from the utterances of the main character in the movie. The data collection techniques are carried out by downloading, watching, reading, identifying, classifying data and encoding data containing mental process. The data analysis techniques are carried out by presenting, describing, interpreting, and concluding the results of this researcher based on Halliday's theory of Systemic Functional Linguistics. The researchers found that the data showed language choices in mental process reflecting the speaker's perspective and subjectivity which encoded the main character’s perception and cognition. Based on the result of the research, the senser and the phenomenon are expressed implicitly which convey the main character's emotional or psychological state without explicitly stating it through dialogue.
