Abstract

This research is intended to analyze the represented of parallel line in TimeRiders using theory of Brian McHale’s Postmodernist Fiction. The research question of this study is formulated: “how is parallel line represented in TimeRiders?”. The objective of this study is to describe parallel line which is represented in TimeRiders. The source of data in this study is TimeRiders novel by Alex Scarrow that is published in 2007. The data was collected through annotating, previewing, and interpreting to get complete analysis about Parallel Line in TimeRiders. Theory of Brian McHale’s Postmodernist Fiction is used as tool for analyzing the finding in the parallel line in TimeRiders. The result of analysis showed that parallel line is represented in TimeRiders, parallel line was represented though time travel. Parallel line connected science fiction and strategy postmodern in this novel. Parallel line caused the application of superimposition in TimeRiders. Superimposition occured in four dimension, they are superimposition in place, superimposition in character, superimposition in space, and superimposition in time. Time travel was done by some characters for several time during 2026, 2001, 1941, 1963, and 1956. The purpose of time travel by Liam is to correct the history that was changed by Kramer, and to correct history is the goal of postmodernism. The history was changed after Kramer fought with Hitler, and he lead Nazi. Kramer expanded his governer in New York. Time travel is one part of science fiction based on parallel line definition. That is why, TimeRiders has science fiction genre. TimeRiders with its science fiction has done alternative history, because of characteristic does not believe history, because history is made by people. Abstract

Langston Hughes is a black American poet who strived to express the experiences of Black in the United States. One of his poem is Fredom Plow which utilized through lots symbols that refered to the problem of discrimination and the vision of American as a nation. This study is aimed to analyze the expression of Black American expression in Freedom’s Plow poem. This study used semiotics approach in analyzing research data by adopting model proposed by C.S Pierce. There are three types of signs based on the relationship between the sign and the signified, namely; Icons, Index, and symbols. Based on the semiotics frameworks, this study found that  Langston Hughes harneses the signs to express (1) preserverance of black to get freedom, (2) expossing the contradiction of American democracy, and (3) the expression of togetherness and unity

Abstract

Character building has become one of the government's program priorities through the mental revolution movement. The goal is to create a new mentality for the nation that is more productive, competitive and prosperous. This study aims to reveal the meaning and cultural values ​​contained in Muna folk songs as a model for building superior characters. Nine folk songs were collected as the object of this study entitled Daesalo Nekakawasa, O'Tampo, Witeno Wuna, Kaninindo Kamokula, O'Raha, Tongkuno, Damekatahi Liwu, O'Wuna, and Dapo Angka-Angkatao. The results indicate that the meanings and cultural values ​​contained in the songs are the existence of God, the Spirit of Building the Nation, Obedience to parents words. These values ​​and meanings can then be used to form superior characters, including forming religious, nationalist, mutual cooperation, and solidarity characters.

Abstract

Penelitian ini mendeskripsikan pengelompokan bahasa Wakatobi berdasarkan metode dialektometri dan hubungannya dengan keanekaragaman lingkungan Wakatobi; dan mendeskripsikan variasi bunyi dan leksikon bahasa Wakatobi berdasarkan kajian dialektologi dan ekolinguistik. Ketidakjelasan pengelompokan bahasa Wakatobi dan perbedaan dalam variasi bahasa tersebut menjadi alasan penelitian ini dilakukan. Penelitian ini menggunakan jenis data primer dan sekunder. Data primer bersumber langsung dari informan; dan data sekunder bersumber dari tinjauan pustaka terdahulu. Data yang terkumpul dianalisis secara deskriptif kualitatif, dengan menggunakan metode dalam dialektologi dan ekolinguistik. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahasa Wakatobi dapat dikelompokkan ke dalam enam subdialek, yaitu: (1) Waha, (2) Kapota, (3) Mandati-Lia, (4) Kaledupa, (5) Tomia, dan (6) Binongko. Pengelompokan bahasa Wakatobi tersebut umumnya berada pada pulau yang berbeda di Kabupaten Wakatobi. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa faktor geografis mengambil peran dalam menyebabkan terjadinya kebervariasian bahasa Wakatobi. Perbedaan bunyi bahasa Wakatobi dapat terjadi secara teratur dan tidak teratur. Variasi teratur terjadi jika kemunculan perubahan bunyi itu disyarati oleh lingkungan linguistik tertentu, sedangkan variasi tidak teratur atau variasi sporadis terjadi jika kemunculan perubahan bunyi itu tidak disyarati oleh lingkungan linguistik. Melalui hasil penelitian ini, diharapkan adanya penelitian lanjutan pada tataran morfologi dan sintaksis untuk menambah informasi mengenai kebahasaan dan mendukung pemetaan bahasa di Kabupaten Wakatobi.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the stereotypes and discrimination that occur in the Green Book movie script. The researcher found many utterances as well as actions that refer to stereotypes and discriminatory behavior committed by white people against black people in America. This study used the qualitative method because qualitative is a procedure that produces descriptive data including written and oral words. The results of this study showed that the Green Book movie script contains three types of discrimination and stereotypes. First, Individual Discrimination is presented in unfair treatment by whites against the main black character, Don Shirley. Second, Institutional Discrimination happened in the police institution where the police imprison Don Shirley who did not commit a crime at all, but only because he was black. Third, Structural Discrimination occurred in the form of policies carried out by majority races which have a negative impact on minority races. In the green Book movie script, structural discrimination is presented in a safe travel guide for black people in southern America, the book also contains such as restaurants, hotels, beauty salons, and then medical stores that are safe for black people to visit. This book was published from 1936 to 1976 during the era of segregation in the United States. As the final result of this research, the researcher found the dominant type of discrimination in the Green Book movie script is Individual Discrimination.

Abstract

Technology can create a hyperreality, hyperreality is an artificial reality that feels real. The portrayal of hyperreality is illustrated in one of the science-fiction movies named Ready Player One by Steven Spielberg. This study aims to analyze the portrayal and the effect of hyperreality that occurs in the society of Columbus, Ohio in Ready Player One movie. Based on the objective of this study, the writer uses Jean Baudrillard’s theory of hyperreality. In this study, the writer used a descriptive qualitative method to analyze and explain how hyperreality portrayed and affected the society of Columbus, Ohio in Ready Player One movie. The writer finds out that hyperreality is formed and portrayed through the simulation of technology. James Halliday is the famous expert and developer of games in Ohio who created a virtual world named the Oasis. People in Ohio use virtual reality as a tool to connect the Oasis and the real world. People spend their time in the Oasis because they can get freedom, money, and pleasure at the Oasis. it makes them rarely socialize in the real world. They also do not have jobs in the real world. Those are the effects of hyperreality that happened in Ready Player One movie by Steven Spielberg.

Abstract

This research investigated the Avatar movie by James Cameron to show the symbolicexpressions of white supremacy towards Native Americans. The opposition resulted in a crisis of hegemony and in the end, the class subordinate resisted, this is what Gramsci meant as the War of Position. This movie shows that supremacy in the way of hegemony is more successful to the way of domination, but the hegemony and dominance were not successful when the allies carried out the opposition.

Abstract

This study focuses on the analysis of the Portrayal of Geisha in “Memoirs of Geisha” Movie Directed by Rob Marshall. It aimed to study how geisha is portrayed in this Movie as Japanese Culture. In this study, the writer uses the descriptive method, by applying the Multicultural Feminism respective in analyzing this Memoirs of Geisha Movie. Geisha was born from a movement of women who tried to live independently in the Meiji period. Geisha is a profession among Japanese women at that time as one of the best jobs for a woman at that time. This study illustrates how Geisha plays an important role in improving the quality of life for women in Japan. Even so, Geisha has a very bad controversy because of the cultural differences that occur between Japan and western culture. Japanese tradition that seems taboo to be done by common people, makes Geisha as one of the controversial cultures. Despite Geisha have a bad value in the western view, Geisha herself has a firm ideology of culture and themselves.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze “The Kissing Booth movie script” in terms of semantic study. The research question of this study is “How is Affective meaning used in The Kissing Booth Movie Script by Beth Reekles?”. The objective of this study is to describe affective meaning is used in ‘The Kissing Booth’ Movie Script by Beth Reekles. The source of data is taken from the movie script by Beth Reekles. This study uses the descriptive qualitative method. The data are collected by searching and downloading, watching the movie, reading the script, classifying, and coding the data. Based on the analysis the writer finds affective meaning such as positive and negative affective meaning. Positive affective meaning consists of three data was (happy data 1 and 2, flattered data 3) and negative affective meaning consists of 12 data that are (angry data 4, 6, 9, 11, 12, shocked data 8 and 13, disappointed data 7 and 14, unhappy data 10, sad data15). The most dominant implication in the movie script objects is the emotion of negative affective meaning. The use of affective meaning depends on the context of the situation that occurs when the utterances stated.

Abstract

Tujuan penelitian ini adalah: untuk mengoptimalkan sosialisasi akan pentingnya literasi untuk mengurangi penyebaran berita bohong bagi masyarakat Kendari Sulawesi Tenggara yang tidak memiliki pengetahuan sebagai strategi pemanfaatan media sosial yang bijak. Penyuluhan dilakukan secara online, merupakan kerjasama antara program studi Manajemen Fakultas Ekonomi Universitas Halu Oleo dengan Kendari English Center berkerja sama dengan The La Malonda Institute yang diikuti oleh lebih dari 20 orang. Hasil penelitian ini dapat disimpulkan bahwa penghentian penyebaran hoaks di media sosial harus dimulai dari diri sendiri. Anggota komunitas ini adalah kaum muda milenial Kendari yang merupakan agen pembentuk masyarakat digital yang sehat dan bebas dari hoaks. Kesimpulan. Di masa pandemi, di mana semua orang berada di dalam ketakutan, kehadiran berita bohong atau hoaks menjadi sebuah keniscayaan. Menyikapi hal ini, upaya untuk meredam penyebaran berita bohong atau hoaks dimulai dari diri sendiri. Untuk itu, diperlukan “benteng pertahanan” yang mumpuni yakni dari pengetahuan, meningkatkan minat baca dan menyebarkan berita hanya dari Lembaga atau instansi yang dapat dipercaya.
