Abstract

This article is an attempt to analyze the practice of polygamy and women’s resistance in Langsa. It will describe the stand point of the women involved in polygamy in their effort to renegotiate their understanding on the Islamic legal ruling on polygamy through their daily activities. By applying socio-anthropology approach, it found that there are two types of resistance: hidden and opened. Hidden resistance (hidden trancript) is revealed through various expressions, such as tarnishing the good name of the spouse or the second wife, pretending to be obedience while doing other wise, or confronting the spouse’s ruling on handling the household. Opened resistance (public transcript) is carried out in two ways, either by asking a divorce before the second marriage takes place, or after, when the second marriage is carried out without the consent of the first wife. Finally, this article argues that the resistance expression of the women involved in polygamy is in fact part of their resistance effort against the dominant interpretation of the legal ruling of polygamy in Islam.

Abstract

The following article analyzes the post-conflict Aceh identity negotiation based on the case study of Aceh’s Crescent and Star Flag also known as the Aceh’s Flag. The paper focuses on tracing the process of collective Aceh identity negotiations as reflected in Aceh’s Crescent and Star Flag discourse, and to the extent of the effectiveness of the establishment of the Aceh flag as a strategy for reformulating the collective identity after the conflict. The following article uses a socio-anthropological approach. The research locations are four regions in Aceh, Banda Aceh, East Aceh, Langsa, and Central Aceh. Semi-structured interviews were conducted against the political elite in Aceh from the pro- and anti-Flag of the Crescent and Star, as well as the central government in Jakarta. Documentation studies were carried out by scrutinizing mass media reports on topics that became research issues. The paper concludes that the diversity of responses of the Aceh community in response to the establishment of the Crescent and Star as the flag of Aceh is a reflection of the social political and cultural diversity that Aceh society is seeking to form a post-conflict collective identity.

Abstract

This article discusses the Talang Mamak people's reaction to the government's modernization and development through the empowerment program for remote indigenous communities in the Indragiri Hulu Province of Riau. The author argues that the government's good intentions to modernize remote indigenous communities are part of an effort to advance and modernize them, not fully realized as expected. This writing uses qualitative methodology. We obtain research data sources from a combination of field research and library research institutions. We conduct field observations and in-depth interviews with selected Talang Mamak individuals. We utilize the research library to access articles from scientific journals, books, magazines, newspapers, and other relevant documents related to the research topic. This writing suggests that Talang Mamak's empowerment program for remote indigenous communities has received a positive religious reception. They generally welcomed the program, although they were critical and partly rejected. Some of them see education as a way to improve the situation, even though they realize that their resources are still scarce. They expect the government to do something to improve their economic conditions. The Mamak Talang people need the country to restore the economic, social, and cultural ecosystems that have suffered damage as a result of companies operating around their living environment.

Abstract

This article discusses the implementation of interfaith partnership strengthening activities between Muslims and Baha'is in Riau through the organization of the Diversity Discourse Chat (BIDUK) #01 by ISAIS UIN Sultan Syarif Kasim Riau. This activity argues that interfaith partnerships in resolving religious relationship issues can be conducted not only through formal approaches facilitated by the state but also through both informal and formal encounters of each community and the willingness to discuss problems related to religious relationships, including sensitive topics. In this regard, ISAIS UIN Sultan Syarif Kasim Riau facilitates periodic discussions packaged through the BIDUK program, which addresses issues of diversity governance in Indonesia. The BIDUK #01 discussion was held as an effort to strengthen mutual understanding between Bahá'ís and Muslims in Riau in addressing issues related to the religious relations of both communities. In the end, the BIDUK discussion contributed to broadening the horizons of each community's members, showing that differences in religious beliefs do not hinder the partnership between Muslims and Bahá'ís in Riau in addressing national issues related to religious relations in Indonesia.
