Abstract

Membaca merupakan keterampilan yang harus dikuasai oleh siswa dalam belajar bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing. Membaca tidak hanya melihat atau membaca apa yang tertulis namun juga memahami isi bacaan sehingga pembaca memperoleh ilmu serta informasi dari bacaan tersebut. Beberapa komponen membaca yang dikemukakan oleh para ahli, seperti pemahaman ide pokok, ide pendukung, kosakata, serta tata bahasa, membuat guru harus cermat dalam mengaplikasikan metode dalam mengajar bahasa Inggris khususnya membaca. Directed Activities related to Text (DART) merupakan metode mengajar yang dapat diaplikasikan dalam kegiatan membaca. Metode ini diaplikasikan melalui aktivitas rekonstruksi dan analisis. Tujuan penulisan artikel ini adalah mendeskripsikan cara pengajaran membaca melalui metode DART. Penulisan merujuk kepada kajian kepustakaan yang mendukung teori DART dalam pengajaran membaca. Dengan adanya informasi mengenai DART yang didukung oleh teori para ahli, dapat dijadikan sumber informasi tentang metode pengajaran bahasa Inggris khususnya membaca yang dapat diterapkan oleh guru di sekolah menengah.Reading is a skill that must be mastered by students in learning English as a foreign language. Reading not only see or read what is written but also understand the contents of the reading therefore the readers get the knowledge and information from the text. Some reading components are suggested by experts, such as understanding the main idea, supporting ideas, vocabulary, and grammar, it makes the teachers must be careful in applying methods in teaching English, especially reading. Directed Activities related to Text (DART) is a teaching method that can be applied in reading activities. This method is applied through reconstruction and analysis activities. The purpose of writing this article is to describe how teaching of reading through the DART method. The article support by a literature review  of DART theory in teaching reading. The information about of DART supported by expert theory, it can be used as a source of information about English teaching methods especially reading that can be applied by teachers in high school.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the relationship of motivation (X) on students’ English learning achievement (Y) of Senior High School number 12 Padang. The population of this research was students of Senior High School number 12 Padang with total population was 894 students. Sample was selected by stratified random sampling technique with total sample was 100 students. The data were collected by using questionnaire. The data were analyzed by using quantitative descriptive technique with SPSS computer program version 20. Based on result of data analysis it can be found that there is a positive correlation between X  and Y  high category (0,783) and significance value less than 0,05 (0,000 <0,05). It can be said that the motivated students make learning achievement better. Thus, internal and external students’ motivation should be considered by the educationist practice.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the relationship of class participation (X1) and motivation (X2) on English learning achievement (Y) of Senior High School number 12 Padang. The population of this research was students of Senior High School number 12 Padang with total population was 894 students. Sample was selected by stratified random sampling technique with total sample was 100 students. The data were collected by using observation and questionnaire. The data were analysis by using quantitative descriptive technique with SPSS computer program version 20. Based on result of data analysis it can be found that first there is positive correlation between X1 with Y with high category (0,793) and significance value less than 0,05 (0,000 <0,05 ), secondly there is a positive correlation between X1 and Y high category (0,783) and significance value less than 0,05 (0,000 <0,05), third there is positive correlation between X1 and X2 on Y with rcount is 0,849 and rtable is 0,163 at significance level 5% and n = 100. It means the higher participation and motivation make learning achievement better. Thus, participation and motivation should be a good consideration in leaning.

Abstract

Feedback is the information which is given by the teachers to the students’ tasks. The information includes students’ error or mistakes on the tasks. There are some kinds of written feedback on students’ writing tasks, namely; direct, indirect, and coded writing tasks. Those clear to point out students what should do on their tasks. This research was a qualitative research focuses on teachers’ writing feedback techniques on students’ writing tasks. This research was done at Prof. Dr.Hamka Islamic Boarding School of Padang Pariaman regency of West Sumatera. The participants of the research were English teachers on the location of the research. The instruments of the research were observation checklist and students’ writing tasks documentation. The data was analyzed through organizing and familiarizing, coding and reducing, and interpreting and representing (Ary, 2010). Based on the research finding, it was found that two English teachers used direct writing feedback with giving correct words, forms, and answer technique on students writing tasks and indirect writing feedback with indicating the error, self-edited, self-revised, and giving comment technique in correcting students’ writing tasks, while the other English teacher used direct, indirect and coded writing feedback on students’ writing tasks. In conclusion, direct, indirect, and coded feedbacks were used by the English teacher at Prof. Dr. Hamka Islamic Boarding School in giving the information and correcting students’ writing tasks.

Abstract

Language styles is one of sociolinguistic study that dialogue of how the people use the language to express feeling and ides to others depending on with whom and where they are speaking. Language style not only used by the people in daily life communication, but also in visual fiction such a movie. This research was descriptive research aimed to describe types of language style used by the characters in “The Ron Clark Story” movie. This analysis was based on five language styles proposed by Martin Joos‟s theory. This research applied content analysis and descriptive qualitative methods in which the data was collected by watching the movie then finding out the conversation that contains language style. The data of this research were taken from the dialogue of the movie that was transcribed into textual form. The researchers focused on those five types of language style. Later on, the researchers classified them based on language style, then finding the dominant language style. The researchers obtained two conclusions; first, there were found five language styles in “The Ron Clark Story” movie, second from those five types, casual style was dominant language style used in the movie. For more detail as follows: frozen style was found 2 data, formal style was found 15 data, consultative style was found 20 data, casual style was found 27 data, andintimate style was found 9 data.

Abstract

This research was based on varieties textbook circulating in learning. The method used in this research is descriptive research method, by analyzing the book "English" Semester 1 published by the Ministry of Education and Culture, English Language Book Revised 2017. The instrument used by the researcher was the Assessment rubric from the National Education Standards Agency Badan Standar Nasional Pendidikan (BSNP) and Documentation. The data were analyzed by using the conformity tabulation of the BSNP rubric and the range category in percentage form.The results of this study indicate that the total percentage obtained is 93.75% and is included in the Good category. This total percentage is obtained from the score on Material Completeness in 5 chapters getting a score of 4 or reaching 95% of the completeness of the material and 1 chapter getting a score of 1 or less than 95% of the completeness of the material. The in-depth score obtained in 5 chapters gets a score of 4 or 95% of the specified in-depth and 1 chapter gets a score of 1 or less than the specified 95% in-depth. The percentage assessment on the Social Function from Chapters 1-6 gets a score of 6 or reaches 95% of the social function provisions of the BSNP. The percentage value of Generic Structure here is 5 chapters getting a score of 4 or meeting 95% of the Generic Structure standards available in the BSNP rubric and 1 chapter getting a score of 1 or the achievement of Generic Structure is less than 95%, the percentage results from Linguistic Features in all the subjects studied are from the chapter 1-6 get a score of 4 or the percentage of achievement from Linguistic Features reaches 95%. The percentage achievement for Supporting Materials has 3 assessment points, namely Relevance, Development of Life Skills and Development of Diversity Insight. Here in chapters 1-6 each gets a score of 4 or reaches 95% of each category. So based on the results that have been examined in this study, the percentage category of achievement of this book is included in the Good category.

Abstract

This research is aimed at describing the use of politeness strategies in classroom interaction in English teaching learning at MAN 1 Tanah Datar in academic year of 2024/2025. The objectives of the research are to (1) identify the types of politeness strategies which were used in the classroom interaction, (2) identify the function implied in the politeness strategies used by English teachers. The research was designed as a qualitative study. There are three steps used in this research, they are (1) colleting the data, (2) analyzing the data and (3) presenting the result of the analysis. The data are collected by observational method. The obtained data were in the form of utterances produced in classroom interactions. This method was followed by non-participatory observational, recording and note taking. The data were analyzed by using referential, translational and distributional method. The results of the analysis were described by using formal and informal method. After analyzing the data, the result of study show (1) politeness was conveyed through three types of politeness strategies, namely: bald-on record, positive politeness, negative politeness, (2) the functions of the politeness can be divided into three, namely, expressive, directive and representative function. The implication of the politeness used at the classroom interaction performs in five aspects where those aspects are very influenced in the process of teaching and learning. The five aspects are efficient teaching and learning, respect communication between teacher and students, togetherness between teacher and students, cooperating interaction between teacher and students, and the use of less imposition and indirectness expression. Those aspects can motivate students and also developing a meaningful teaching and learning process.

Abstract

This research was experimental research. This research had purpose to find the effect of using RAFT strategy towards students’ writing achievment at grade VIII SMP N 4 Batang Anai. Instruments of this research was writing test. this research used cluster random sampling. Samples of this research were class VIII 2 as experimental class and VIII 3 as control class. Experiment class was taught by RAFT strategy and control class was taught by conventional strategy. Based on the result of research that gotten by post test score. The analysis result showed that the mean score of experimental class was 76.79 with standard deviation was 7.54 and the mean score of control class was 69.43 with standard deviation was 7.39. So, it could be concluded that the RAFT strategy gave significant effect towards students’ writing ability than conventional strategy. It also was supported by the result t-calculated 1.93 > t-table 1.67. So that H1 was accepted and Ho was rejected.
