Abstract

Introduction: Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus haemolyticus were some of bacteria that often found in pus specimen. Unlike S. aureus, which is true pathogen, S. haemolyticus which is known by opportunistic bacteria were not considered as caused of infection. Therefore, the need of comparative data that can determine whether S. haemolyticus were cause of infection or just colonization was necessary. The purpose of this research is to compare clinical profile of patients’ with S. aureus and S. haemolyticus found in pus specimen. Methods: This study was a descriptive research using cross-sectional approach. The object of the research were patients’ medical records which have been identified by pus culture with positive result of Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus haemolyticus on 2013-2014. Sampling was held during November and December 2015 at Dr. Moewardi Hospital, Surakarta with inclusion and exclusion criterias. Sampling was done and 69 people taken from the population. The data was statically analyzed by frequency distributive technique. Result: In 2 years, it is found that patients with Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus haemolyticus are dominantly by men. Most of patients are adult (19-65 years old). Body temperature of patients with Staphylococcus aureus risk 2,04 times of increasing than patients with Staphylococcus haemolyticus. Conclusions: There are differences in clinical profile of patient with Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus haemolyticus on pus specimen at Dr. Moewardi Hospital. Abstract

Background: Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is one of the most frequent hip disorders in children. SCFE is due to the displacement of the epiphysis (femoral head that keeps its location in the acetabulum) relative to the metaphysis (femoral neck) and shaft at the physic level. Treatment seeks to prevent worsening of epiphyseal slippage on the metaphysis, and percutaneous in situ fixation (ISF) using a single cannulated screw has long shown efficacy.Case Presentation: An 11 years old boy presented with diagnosed with slipped capital femoral epiphysiolysis of right hip and treated operatively with one screw pinning guiding fluoroscopy. Post operatively, from X-Ray evaluation confirmed the proper position without joint penetration. Patient is then advised to walk with crutches for gradual weight bearing to full weight bearing after 4 weeks. Then after 6 weeks, patient had already walked normally again. Conclusion: In unstable moderate-to-severe SCFE, the best reduction indications and technique remain controversial. There are many theories supporting one or two screws pinning technique. In this case we used one screw pinning fixation with excellent result. Keywords: slipped capital femoral epiphysis, treatment, one screw in situ fixationCorrespondence: Udi Heru Nefihancoro. Abstract

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a heritable bone dysplasia characterized by bone fragility and long bone deformities. This study aims to report the profile of osteogenesis imperfecta in Dr. Moewardi General Hospital. The patients were searched from the medical record, registered from January 1, 2020, to December 31, 2021, in Dr. Moewardi General Hospital, a tertiary hospital in Surakarta, Indonesia. The data were recorded and described in tables as age, sex, type of OI according to Sillence, clinic, ward admission, signs and symptoms, bisphosphonate therapy and its discipline, as well as the surgical/non-surgical treatment. The quantity of male patients is higher than that of females, OI type IV is the most common, the most common sign/symptoms are fracture and blue sclera, and the most common bone to be fractured is the femur. More than half of patients received bisphosphonate therapy, but only a quarter received it routinely. More than half of patients have performed surgery as the treatment of fractures. Osteogenesis imperfecta patients require an interdisciplinary and tailored treatment that involves both medical and surgical components.

Abstract

Background: Scurvy, vitamin C deficiency, is a rare condition but remains relevant in Indonesia. This study aims to analyze the role of vitamin C hypovitaminosis in the development of scurvy and its impact on bone health through an observational study at Dr. Moewardi General Hospital. Surakarta. Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted on 30 patients diagnosed with scurvy at Dr. Moewardi General Hospital Surakarta during the 2020-2023 period. Demographic data, medical history, nutritional status, and severity of scurvy were collected. A radiological examination of the bone is performed to assess scurvy-related changes. Descriptive, comparative, and Spearman correlation statistical analyzes were used. Results: The majority of patients were men (66.7%) with a mean age of 45 years. A history of an unbalanced diet with low fruit and vegetable intake was found in the majority of patients (86.7%). Common symptoms include fatigue (86.7%), joint pain (73.3%), bleeding gums (60%), and skin bleeding (53.3%). The severity of scurvy varied, with 10 patients (33.3%) experiencing severe scurvy. Radiological examination shows significant changes in long bones, especially osteoporosis and thinning of the cortex, which is more obvious in patients with severe scurvy. Spearman correlation analysis showed a positive correlation between the severity of scurvy and the incidence of osteoporosis (rho = 0.495, p = 0.005) and cortical thinning (rho = 0.394, p = 0.031). Conclusion: Vitamin C hypovitaminosis plays a significant role in the development of scurvy and has a negative impact on bone health. Early screening and diagnosis of scurvy are important to prevent musculoskeletal complications. Nutritional education and dietary interventions to increase vitamin C intake need to be intensified, especially in high-risk groups.

Abstract

Background: Periosteal stripping (PS) is a controversial technique in fracture management, with studies reporting both positive and negative effects on bone healing. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of PS and non-periosteal stripping (NPS) on fracture healing in the Sprague Dawley rat model. Methods: This study is an in vivo experimental research. Male Sprague Dawley rats (8-10 weeks old) were divided into four groups (n=10 per group): Group I: NPS, evaluation day 14; Group II: PS, evaluation day 14; Group III: NPS, evaluation day 28 and Group IV: PS, evaluation day 28. A standard fracture was created in the tibia, and PS or NPS was performed. Radiographic evaluation was performed on days 14 and 28, with the RUST score (Radiographic Union Score for Tibia) used to assess fracture healing. Statistical analysis was performed using the Kruskal-Wallis test. Results: The RUST score showed better fracture healing in the NPS group compared to PS on day 28 (p<0.05). There was no significant difference on day 14 (p>0.05). Conclusion: NPS was more effective in accelerating fracture healing in Sprague Dawley rats than PS, especially in the later stages of healing. These findings provide further evidence of the potential adverse effects of PS and highlight the importance of considering time in assessing its efficacy.
