Abstract

Learning media innovation is in line with developments in information technology. Many of the innovations being developed now utilize the fields of multimedia and mobile devices. These two fields have proven capable of producing interesting learning media and making it easier for students to learn learning material digitally. One of the learning materials that requires digital media is English. Many English learning applications have been developed but are not yet in accordance with the learning plans of teachers and students so they are not used directly in class. Based on these problems, this research developed an application for learning English digitally that can be used directly in classroom learning. Application development is carried out using the waterfall method and is adjusted to the learning plans of school teachers. The results of application implementation are tested on all users through user assistance and filling out surveys. From the results of testing the application using black box testing, it was found that the percentage of 100% of the functions ran as expected. From the results of the application validation test, a score of 86.5% was obtained for material suitability from material experts, 83.8% for media suitability from media experts, 82.6% for useability from educators' assessments, and 81% for useability from students' assessments. From the overall validation test results carried out on material experts, media experts, educators and students, the overall average validation results were 84.37%, which shows that the Easy Tenses application created can be categorized as very suitable for use. Keywords: Applications, English, Digital media, Multimedia, Waterfall Method.

Abstract

A digital content education program established by Liputan 6.com under the name of Digi-X was created to fill out the demand of digital education by the public. Digi-X has been frequently invited to open classes and give talks on how to develop the company profiling and to share information in a more effective and engaging way to public and private sectors. The workshops have various presenters and the materials are delivered in a lecture-like format. Through an internship program between Liputan 6.com and the English Literature Study Program of UNNES that has begun since 2021, four lecturers-cum-researchers are invited to review the Digi-X performance. Based on the interview, survey and observation of the Digi-X documents, materials, and classes, Digi-X needs to improve the quality of its course documents, particularly the lesson plans. We argue that by arranging them in a detailed and engaging format, they can guide the speakers in terms of material coverage, learning goals and time management. In exchange, the internship program equips the lecturers with real-life knowledge and skills on management and types of works in the journalism industry that can be inserted in the lesson plans and implemented in class.

Abstract

This study investigated how language selection in Genshin Impact influenced Indonesian university students’ perceptions of English reading comprehension and explored the motivations behind their language choices. Employing a qualitative case study design supported by descriptive quantitative data, data were collected through screening questionnaires and semi-structured interviews, then analyzed using thematic analysis. The research involved 33 questionnaire respondents and 6 interview participants selected through purposive sampling. The findings revealed that the majority of participants (81.8%) perceived English-language gameplay as beneficial for vocabulary acquisition, reading speed, and exposure to contextual language use. However, English was also perceived as cognitively demanding due to complex narrative structures and fantasy terminology. Meanwhile, Indonesian was preferred for narrative comfort, emotional connection, and easier comprehension. Students’ language choices were strongly influenced by motivations related to self-improvement, authenticity, entertainment, localization quality, and social interaction. The study suggests that narratively rich video games can function as meaningful informal learning environments that support English reading development outside formal educational settings.

Abstract

This study examines the attitudes of low-proficiency learners towards translanguaging practices in an EFL classroom in Indonesia, where exposure to English is mostly limited to formal instruction. A qualitative descriptive design was employed, with data collected through semi-structured interviews involving one teacher and ten low-proficiency learners. The findings indicate that learners generally hold positive attitudes towards translanguaging, as it facilitates understanding of instructional content, reduces anxiety, and creates a more supportive learning environment. The use of both Indonesian and English in an English class has been shown to facilitate comprehension of explanations, support the acquisition of new vocabulary, and enhance learners' confidence in participating in classroom activities. However, enhanced comprehension does not necessarily translate into active participation, as restricted vocabulary and diminished confidence remain significant impediments. Learners' attitudes are predominantly shaped by their linguistic challenges and the pedagogical approaches instructors employ in implementing translanguaging. Translanguaging can be regarded as an inclusive pedagogical approach that fosters both comprehension and emotional engagement, particularly among learners with limited proficiency. It is recommended that further research be conducted in order to explore the role of shadow teachers in supporting translanguaging practices, providing individualized scaffolding, and enhancing learners' participation and confidence in using English more actively.

Abstract

Vocabulary learning through TikTok offers authentic language exposure, but it comes with certain challenges. It is important to understand how students face these challenges and adopt effective strategies to enhance learning outcomes. This study aims to examine the challenges EFL students face and the strategies they use to overcome them for effective learning outcomes. This study uses a qualitative research approach. An open-ended questionnaire and semi-structured interviews were used to collect the data. The data was analyzed using a thematic analysis. The findings show that students encounter challenges with informal language such as slang,  abbreviations, and idioms. The platform provides limited explanation and context. Students have difficulties in following various speeds and accents, while also facing distractions and inconsistent content quality. This condition allows students to develop adaptive learning strategies, including seeking meaning from external sources and making use of features such as comments, replay, pause, and subtitles. Students reinforce their vocabulary through practice, note-taking, and repetition. Some students also rely on contextual clues for understanding. Those strategies demonstrate that students actively manage their learning in an unstructured environment. Indicates that students’ capability to develop and implement suitable learning strategies is essential to obtain effective learning on TikTok.
