Abstract

This study uses Judith Butler's queer theory and also involves the concept of mental attitudes and mental functions by Carl Gustav Jung. Previous research has focused mainly on providing an overview of some studies that use ideas such as gender performativity and literary psychology to examine homosexual behavior and identification in films and novels. Meanwhile, this research discussing homosexual identity in the novel 'They Both Die at The End' by Adam Silvera is very restricted. Thus, this research is intended to investigate the representation of homosexual identity and also the factors that cause homosexuality in the characters of the novel. This research used qualitative research, and the data collection technique in this study uses reading and note-taking techniques. The results of this study show that the formation of homosexual identity in this novel is shown by performative actions, which are influenced by social interactions, conversations, emotional experiences, and the characteristics of the main characters.

Abstract

This study analyzes the character Lady Lazarus in Sylvia Plath's poem against the backdrop of widespread emotional stress among young people, which often leads to depression and anxiety. Through a descriptive qualitative approach, this research examines the id, ego, and superego, as well as the techniques of condensation, displacement, and symbolization in the poem using Freud's theory. The results show that Lady Lazarus is dominated by the death drive (id), balances it with reality (ego), and rebels against social norms (superego). Additionally, the analysis of condensation, displacement, and symbolization in Lady Lazarus reveals that metaphors are used to convey complex psychological conflicts, particularly the struggle between life and death, objectification, and the desire for renewal and self-destruction, in line with Freud’s theory. These techniques uncover complex inner conflicts and represent the loss of humanity in the struggle between life and death.

Abstract

Queer representation in popular culture often operates within a tension between resistance to heteronormative norms and the market-driven commodification of queer identities. This study examined how lesbian relationships were portrayed in the manhua “Please Bully Me, Miss Villainess!” by Ciwei, focusing on the functions of the narrative as queer subversion or as a commodified cultural product. Despite the growing evidence of female–female romance in yuri narratives, limited research has explored how such representations simultaneously negotiate identity and market logic. Drawing on Butler’s theory of gender performativity and Kellner’s theory of the cultural industry, this study employed a qualitative descriptive method. The data, which consisted of dialogues, narrative scenes, and visual interactions from the first ten chapters of the manhua, were analyzed through discourse and textual analysis. The findings revealed that queer subversion was the dominant representational strategy, particularly through resistance to heteronormativity, role reversal, and gender performativity, which affirmed same-sex intimacy and emotional commitment. However, the study also identified commodification strategies, mainly emotional selling points and simplification of queer identity, which framed queer intimacy as market-friendly. These findings indicated that while lesbian representation in the manhua was explicit and affirmative, it was also shaped by popular culture conventions and commercial interests. Overall, this study concluded that queer identity in “Please Bully Me, Miss Villainess!” existed within a negotiated space between visibility, resistance, and commodification in contemporary popular media.
