Abstract

Technology in education develops so fast. Learning language also needs media that can support the students to develop their speaking skill. This article aims to analyze the opportunities and challenges of students in using artificial intelligence-based application Cake as the alternative for learning speaking. In this qualitative research, the writer used observation, interview and documentation. It was conducted on the second semester students of Tadris Bahasa Inggris study program, Tarbiyah Faculty of Institut Agama Islam Negeri Kudus. The results showed that Cake application is so helpful and contributive to the students’ learning process because this application is easy to access, serves various topics in every level and category, the examples of conversation, chance for practicing to speak, evaluations of pronunciation, score of pronunciation/speaking and repetition. The challenges for the students in using this application are the materials unavailability, internet connection, gadget capacity and finding appropriate place for accessing and learning it. This application records and test the students’ speaking so it needs a quiet place.

Abstract

Technology, pedagogy, and subject knowledge are all integrated into the teaching framework known as TPACK (Technological Pedagogical and Content Knowledge). This framework has not been widely used by English teachers in Indonesia to help pupils learn English. This study intends to investigate, evaluate, and thoroughly discuss English language education programs within the context of TPACK. The descriptive qualitative method was employed in this study. The information was gathered through a review of the literature on English language instruction utilizing the TPACK (Technological Pedagogical and Content Knowledge) paradigm. The collected literature data were then thoroughly compared, assessed, critiqued, and concluded after thorough analysis. The information demonstrates reflective programs for teaching English as a second language that combine and integrate technology, pedagogy, and content, including methods and activities for learning English as well as methods for assessing language proficiency. The findings of this study are anticipated to enhance the general knowledge and instructional abilities of Indonesian teachers, particularly those who teach English.

Abstract

Despite the expanding application of Augmented Reality (AR) in educational settings, rigorous empirical investigations into its efficacy for enhancing reading comprehension among English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners remain limited, particularly in the Indonesian higher education context. This study employed a quasi-experimental mixed-methods design to examine the impact of Assemblr EDU, an AR-based instructional application, on the reading comprehension performance of 104 undergraduate EFL learners at the B1 proficiency level. Utilizing the Dialang reading assessment and one-way analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), the quantitative findings revealed a statistically significant difference in posttest scores between the experimental group (M = 15.61) and the control group (M = 12.43), with a large effect size (partial η² = .919, p < .001), thereby affirming the pedagogical advantage of AR integration in reading instruction. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with six experienced EFL lecturers to contextualize the quantitative results further. Thematic analysis indicated that AR-supported instruction enhanced student motivation, vocabulary acquisition, and comprehension through multimodal interaction. However, technological constraints and limited access to digital resources were noted as implementation barriers. The study provides robust evidence supporting the efficacy of AR in improving EFL reading outcomes. It underscores the need for systemic support, including infrastructure readiness and targeted teacher training, to optimize its integration. These findings contribute to the theoretical and practical discourse on technology-enhanced language learning and offer implications for the design of future AR-based pedagogical interventions in EFL contexts.
