Abstract

Abstract

Abstract:. In choosing news sources, journalists often make someone their favorite source (media darling). This definition refers to sources that journalists like because of their attitudes, actions or statements. Erick Thohir, who has a business background and is now the Minister of BUMN, has emerged as a media darling. However, in November 2021, Erick was reported to the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) regarding the PCR business, alleging that Erick was involved in the PCR business. The media is busy reporting on this case. Even though the news about the PCR business comes from the same person, the presentation is always different. There is no such thing as being neutral in reporting, the media will have a different point of view. This is related to certain ideologies embraced by the media (Van Dijk, 1988). For this reason, this research reveals Erick Thohir's representation in reporting on the COVID-19 PCR business case in the online media Republika.co.id and Okezone.com. The aim is to see how the two online media describe representative of Erick Thohir in the PCR business case news. Using Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) with the Wodak & Reisigl model, the results of the study show that the two online media, namely Republika.co.id and Okezone.com, show Erick as a media darling, as seen from the news that appears depicting the figure of Erick, who is a state official working professionally and well. Everything that is accused by the public can be disputed in the news presented in the online media. The news was conveyed in a positive tone. Even though in the news published on Okezone.com there are sources other than Erick, his statement still represents that Erick is an official who has a good track record.

Abstract

The rapid growth of TikTok as a short-form video-based social media platform has transformed the nature of digital activism, particularly among Generation Z, the platform's largest user group. Beyond functioning as a medium for information dissemination, TikTok has become a space for digital identity construction, the expression of social concern, and the negotiation of activist meanings. However, the increasing prevalence of online participation has also intensified debates concerning the boundaries between performative activism and slacktivism. This study aims to examine how the discourses of performative activism and slacktivism are constructed within TikTok content produced by Indonesian Generation Z through the perspective of Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis. Employing a qualitative research design, the study applies Fairclough's three-dimensional analytical framework encompassing textual analysis, discursive practice, and social practice. The data were collected through digital documentation and non-participant observation of 56 TikTok videos addressing environmental sustainability, mental health, education, gender equality, and humanitarian issues, together with their captions, hashtags, and audience comments. The findings reveal that digital activism is constructed through persuasive language, visual representations, symbols of solidarity, and communication strategies oriented toward algorithmic visibility. Activist practices on TikTok are predominantly characterized by symbolic forms of participation, including the use of campaign hashtags and calls to like, share, and comment, whereas explicit invitations to engage in offline collective action remain relatively limited. Furthermore, the findings demonstrate that performative activism and slacktivism should not be understood as dichotomous concepts but rather as a continuum of digital participation shaped by individual motivations, platform characteristics, participatory culture, and TikTok's algorithmic mechanisms. This study contributes to the advancement of digital communication scholarship by integrating the concepts of performative activism, slacktivism, and Critical Discourse Analysis to explain the transformation of activism within algorithm-driven social media ecosystems.

Abstract

Digital communication has positioned WhatsApp Groups as a key space for information exchange and coordination in residential communities. This study describes the intensity of WhatsApp Group use and residents’ quality of life, and analyzes the statistical effect of usage intensity on the quality of life of Cavana Garden Village residents. A quantitative cross-sectional survey was conducted. Eighty residents were selected purposively for the main study based on group-membership and usage-experience criteria, while 20 respondents took part in instrument testing. Likert-scale questionnaires measured frequency, duration, attention, and participation, as well as physical, psychological, social-relationship, and environmental domains. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and simple linear regression after parametric assumptions were assessed. Usage intensity was high (mean = 3.54), and overall quality of life was also high (mean = 3.43), although the psychological domain remained moderate (mean = 3.38). A regression coefficient of 1.174, t = 6.752, and p < .001 indicated a positive and statistically significant predictive association. R² = .369 means that the model explained 36.9% of quality-of-life variation, while 63.1% was attributable to other factors and error. Relevant, orderly, and participatory group use may support access to information, coordination, and social support. Because the design was cross-sectional and the sample was purposive, the findings do not establish causality and should be generalized only to an accessible population with similar characteristics.
