Abstract

This study aims to determine the role of organizational communication through newmedia in supporting operational activities at PT Natlas Rekartha Indonesia. This heavy equipment tire distributor has a geographically separated work structure between its head office in Jakarta and its operational unit in Kalimantan. This research employs a constructivist paradigm with a descriptive qualitative approach through a field study. Data was collected through in-depth interviews with three key informants, there are the Managing Director, the Jakarta Head of Operations, and the Banjarmasin Head of Operations; supported by observation and documentation. The results show that the company utilizes three complementary new media platforms: WhatsApp for rapid daily coordination, email for formal communication and documentation, and Google Meet for cross-regional synchronous virtual meetings. The use of these platforms has positively impacted communication speed, time and cost efficiency, and ease of coordination. Nevertheless, several obstacles were identified, including potential miscommunication due to brief text messages, limited nonverbal communication, information overload on WhatsApp, and unstable internet connectivity in Kalimantan. In conclusion, new media-based communication within the company operates quite effectively in supporting its operations, yet it requires more optimal management to minimize existing barriers.

Abstract

The development of social media has transformed the way businesses communicate with their consumers, particularly in the food and beverage industry. Instagram has become one of the primary platforms for digital communication. This study aims to analyze the digital communication strategy implemented by lowky in increasing audience engagement through Instagram. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation. The research informants consisted of the Social Media Admin as the key informant, the Head Bar, the Head Kitchen, and customers as supporting informants. The findings indicate that lowky implements its digital communication strategy through structured content planning, audience-oriented message development, and the utilization of Instagram features such as reels, stories, feeds, and highlights. The uniqueness of lowky’s digital communication strategy lies in its storytelling approach through the Si Manis Americano content series, which combines cinematic storytelling with soft-selling techniques closely related to everyday life. This strategy successfully increased audience engagement through likes, comments, shares, saves, and contributed to higher customer visits as well as collaboration opportunities with influencers and other partners. The study concludes that storytelling serves as an effective digital communication strategy in strengthening audience engagement through Instagram.

Abstract

The rapid growth of TikTok as a short-form video-based social media platform has transformed the nature of digital activism, particularly among Generation Z, the platform's largest user group. Beyond functioning as a medium for information dissemination, TikTok has become a space for digital identity construction, the expression of social concern, and the negotiation of activist meanings. However, the increasing prevalence of online participation has also intensified debates concerning the boundaries between performative activism and slacktivism. This study aims to examine how the discourses of performative activism and slacktivism are constructed within TikTok content produced by Indonesian Generation Z through the perspective of Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis. Employing a qualitative research design, the study applies Fairclough's three-dimensional analytical framework encompassing textual analysis, discursive practice, and social practice. The data were collected through digital documentation and non-participant observation of 56 TikTok videos addressing environmental sustainability, mental health, education, gender equality, and humanitarian issues, together with their captions, hashtags, and audience comments. The findings reveal that digital activism is constructed through persuasive language, visual representations, symbols of solidarity, and communication strategies oriented toward algorithmic visibility. Activist practices on TikTok are predominantly characterized by symbolic forms of participation, including the use of campaign hashtags and calls to like, share, and comment, whereas explicit invitations to engage in offline collective action remain relatively limited. Furthermore, the findings demonstrate that performative activism and slacktivism should not be understood as dichotomous concepts but rather as a continuum of digital participation shaped by individual motivations, platform characteristics, participatory culture, and TikTok's algorithmic mechanisms. This study contributes to the advancement of digital communication scholarship by integrating the concepts of performative activism, slacktivism, and Critical Discourse Analysis to explain the transformation of activism within algorithm-driven social media ecosystems.

Abstract

The use of social media in the digital era has transformed communication patterns between government agencies and the public, making them faster, more open, and more interactive. For disaster management agencies, public trust is a crucial aspect that can be cultivated through appropriate and sustainable communication strategies. This study aims to analyze the communication strategy implemented by the Data and Information Center (Pusdatin) of BPBD DKI Jakarta in shaping its organizational image through the Instagram platform. The study employs a descriptive qualitative approach, utilizing data collection techniques such as in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation. Research informants included BPBD DKI Jakarta social media administrators as well as members of the public who follow the agency and utilize disaster-related information via Instagram. The results indicate that the dissemination of information that is fast, accurate, consistent, and easy to understand enhances the public's positive perception of the agency. Furthermore, the use of Instagram's interactive features, information transparency, and responsiveness to the public serve to strengthen BPBD DKI Jakarta's image as a professional, responsive, and trustworthy institution in disaster management operations.

Abstract

Pictorial Health Warnings (PHW) on cigarette packaging have been implemented in Indonesia since 2014, yet the number of smokers among the productive age group remains high despite more than a decade of enforcement. This condition indicates a problem in how the audience interprets the message, rather than merely a matter of message reach. This study aims to describe and analyze the meaning of PHW visual communication among productive-age residents of RT 007 RW 009, Bintara Village, Bekasi City. The research employs a descriptive qualitative approach using reception analysis grounded in Stuart Hall's encoding-decoding theory, supported by the concept of visual habituation to explain the effect of repeated exposure on the intensity of audience response. Data were collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews, non-participant observation, and documentation involving four informants with different levels of exposure to cigarettes. The findings show that all informants understood the validity of the health-risk messages conveyed by PHW, yet this understanding diverged into dominant, negotiated, and oppositional positions depending on their smoking status and peer social pressure. Visual habituation resulting from repeated exposure further widened the gap between cognitive understanding and actual behavioral change.

Abstract

The development of generative artificial intelligence has transformed the digital visual communication ecosystem by enabling the production and manipulation of increasingly realistic images, thereby challenging the assumption that what is seen can immediately be trusted as evidence. This study aims to analyze the relationship between visual signs, deepfakes, digital verification, visual trust, and the construction of truth in digital media. This study employs an interpretive qualitative approach through visual semiotic, multimodal, and reflexive thematic analyses of a corpus of digital visual materials, including deepfakes, AI-generated images, visual manipulation, misinformation, and debates concerning authenticity. The analysis focuses on denotative and connotative aspects, the relationship between visual representation and textual framing, circulation context, and verification processes through source tracing, reverse image search, comparison with independent sources, metadata, and provenance. The findings show that visual realism still shapes initial credibility but is no longer sufficient to guarantee authenticity because deepfakes can preserve strong iconic resemblance while weakening the indexical relationship with reality. Awareness of deepfakes also creates a paradox of distrust in which both synthetic and authentic content may be questioned. Authenticity is also determined by the consistency among images, claims, sources, time, location, and circulation context. Digital verification therefore becomes an important epistemic mechanism for linking images with sources, context, and external evidence. This study concludes that visual truth is increasingly contextual, conditional, and negotiated, shifting the paradigm from seeing is believing to seeing requires verification, while emphasizing the importance of visual literacy and evidence triangulation in building trust.
