Abstract

This article is intended to provide insight to researchers who are still doubtful about the validity and reliability of one of the data collection methodologies, namely the method of discourse completion test in general pragmatic research and interlanguage pragmatics. The literature review was used in the preparation of this article to get the comprehensive picture of the completion discourse test. One of the results is that data collection methods using completion discourse test have advantages and disadvantages. One drawback is that the authenticity of the data and the limitations on the data quality obtained from an informant or respondent, even in certain studies, is judged to not be able to capture sufficiently good data. However, this method is a very good method to find stereotype data because researchers can obtain abundant data in sufficient quantities by this method. In addition, this completion discourse test is very effective in the language study in the cross-cultural domain. This method can be used to capture data in two or more languages with different cultural backgrounds as Blum-Kulka and Olshtain did (in 1984). The control of research variables by using the completion discourse test is considered better because one of the research variables in pragmatic studies is the context of conversation which is very dynamic so that there needs to be controlled. Controlling this research variable is expected to be able to make conclusions that are more conical answer for the research problem. Keywords: discourse completion test, interlanguage pragmatics, research variable control

Abstract

This is a literature study on Hassan Hanafi's response to the hegemony of Western civilization by using hegemony theory of Gramsci. One of the responses discussed in this research is the discussion of Occidentalism. Hanafi introduced the notion of Occidentalism as a study of the West from the eyes of the East. He acknowledges that the West is a major entrant and also a source of scientific knowledge in our consciousness. Therefore, the West occupies a very important position. Such an important position according to Hanafi received less serious response by Muslim intellectuals. Hanafi's Occidentalism was intended to confront Western civilization's hegemony of the East consciousness. With Occidentalism it is expected that the Eastern position which has been used as the object of the study may change, that is to be an observer or researcher. In addition, Hanafi’s Occidentalism wants to end the Western myth as a representation and the holder of world civilization supremacy. Western studies of the East have so far led to a stereotype that the rise and fall of a civilization can be measured by the benchmarks of Western civilization. Such an attitude, eventually foster inferiority to other civilizations. The main source of this study is Hanafi’s book entiteled Muqaddimah fī ‘Ilmi al-Istighrāb. The paper found that Hanafi’s Occidentalism is not as a counterpart of Orientalism, not as a tool in fighting against Western civilization, nor as anti-Western, but the Occidentalism used as a means to position the West as one of civilizations without narrow fanaticism, without blind thought, while enhancing local wisdom and Eastern tradition amid advances in technology and science.

Abstract

Potentially, both inclusivism and exclusivism can emerge from Islam itself. To an extreme point, inclusive point of view underline the importance to apprecieate religious pluralism and to avoid truth claims. To the other extreme, exlusive point of view suspect and even reject pluralism and upholds truth claims. Islam may be presented by the two extremes, and it is not only because of defferent emphasis in reading the holy texts, but also because of defferent methodologies of interpretation being employed. This paper discusses different methodologi of interpretation that determinate significantly the meaning of dīn, millah and syarī’ah and how they are related. The one that uses the relation of synonymy avoid ta’ārud al-adillah reading (the dispute among axioms) so leads to inclusive comprehension. The other using the relation of hyponymy between din and syarī’ah leads to ta’arud reading, uses of nasikh wa al-mansūkh method (abrogation), and so leads to exclusive comprehension.

Abstract

Responding to compliment sometimes puts the speech partner in a dilemma. Receiving a compliment can cause a chance of a self-compliment impression. If you refuse a compliment, it will give the impression of not appreciating the reasonable judgment of the speech partner (complimenter). This dilemma will be more complicated for foreign language learners, including those who have linguistic skills at an advanced level. This article contains how native speakers provide an assessment for the compliment responses of speeches to Japanese learners, especially in Central Java and D.I.Yogyakarta. Fifty-three respondents were Japanese learners, and five were native Japanese speakers as judges to assess the naturalness of the respondents' compliment speech responses. Among 424 responses of Japanese learners' compliment speech, 55 per cent of the respondents' speech was considered unnatural. It indicates that there has been a socio-pragmatic failure and a pragma-linguistic failure. Socio-pragmatic failure can be seen in the "lack of competence" to consider extra-linguistic factors, such as the failure to consider whom the partners are speaking, the failure to understand the horizontal distance and vertical distance speech partners. The use of speech levels that are not under the conversation context is quite visible in the data.

Abstract

The Arab States has faced political turbulence since January 0f 2011. This political event began by suicide action from a youth named Mohammed Bouazizi (Tunisia)until it spread to the other states such as Egypt, Syria, and the like. The political event became the beginning of the people power to fight against dictator regime in most of the Arab States. The rise of the people power succeeded to end the power of some tyrannical regimes, beginning from Tunisia, Zein Al-Abidin Ben Ali, followed by the end of Mubarak’s regime in Egypt, Syria still having political turbulence until now in order to overthrow Bashar al-Assad’s regime, and some other Arab States which can’t be irrespective from the political turbulence. This political event is called “The Arab Spring”, that is the coming of the hope for the better life with a democratic system. This writing tries to discuss chronology of that event and also tries to find out factors becoming cause of the political turbulence.

Abstract

AbstractResponding to compliments has the potential to cause a polemic for its speakers. Either responding with acceptance at the risk that it would be considered as arrogant or responding with rejection at the risk of disrespecting the interlocutor's opinion of the compliment’s content is where the polemic lies. How Japanese language learners in Indonesia respond to complimentary speech acts is the question addressed in this research. This research is a descriptive study aimed at finding the characteristics of responses given by Japanese language learners in Indonesia to complementary speech acts. The respondents are Japanese language learners with Javanese backgrounds, currently studying at university level in Central Java and Yogyakarta. Data obtained from 53 respondents resulted in 636 speeches of compliment responses obtained using the ODCT. Based on the results of the data analysis, acceptance responses to compliments were found to be very high, reaching 65 percent of all data. Subsequently, an interesting finding was revealed in the context of compliment pertaining to ability in every context of relationship between the speech participants, wherein most of the respondents rejected the compliment in the respective relationship context, which differs with the context of compliments pertaining to appearance, possession, and personal traits. Keywords: compliment, compliment response, acceptance, rejection, deflection Merespon tuturan pujian berpotensi menimbulkan polemik bagi penuturnya.

Abstract

This paper examines the implementation of counter-radicalization extension by Islamic Extension Workers (IEW) and the policies issued in the effort at the Ministry of Religion Affairs (MoRA) in Sukoharjo, Central Java. The descriptive method was used by using the qualitative approach. The results show that the MoRA had established a program for disseminating Islamic moderation in the 2015-2020 Strategic Plan as a counter-radicalization, which the Directorate General of Islamic Guidance programmed to optimize the role of IEW. However, until the end of the Strategic Plan, the program was unclear to the level of extension workers. Although there was no policy for operational guidance on it, MoRa of Sukoharjo made a policy to enact the decision of the General Director of Islamic Guidance number 297/2017 as a reference for radicalism extension. In the implementation of the face-to-face approach of extension (inter persona communication), it has not run optimally by IEW due to their competency and capacity factors. While in the mediated communication approach, IEW of Sukoharjo has succeeded in developing the extension activities through counter radicalism narratives, mosque coaching, and forming the communication forum for Mosque administrators as counter radicalism efforts.

Abstract

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the influence of Arabic culture to Arabic in science and technological terms in order to measure the number of words and terms owned and absorbed by Arabic language. It is a kind of descriptive qualitative study, which tends to analyze the data inductively. Both distributional method and identity method were used for analyzing the data. The result of this study shows that other findings indicate that the Arabic language terms were commonly found in mathematics science, astronomy, geography, and medical. Meanwhile, most of the terms in the fields of pharmacy, physics, chemistry and biology are absorbed into Arabic because of its universality. Moreover, many terms in information system and communication technology are widely absorbed by Arabic language in the way of translation, meaning and concept borrowing, and loan-word forms.
