Abstract

Non-hemorrhagic white matter stroke in the cerebral cortex can result in ipsilateral symptoms such as sensory and motor impairments, loss of balance, cognitive decline, and reduced mobility in both upper and lower extremities. These deficits significantly hinder the individual's ability to perform effective postural control, leading to difficulties in maintaining body position and directing movement. Consequently, patients with white matter lesions often experience functional movement limitations and exhibit uncoordinated or purposeless motor activities. This study aims to investigate the impact of physiotherapy intervention using the New Bobath Concept in a case of hemiplegia caused by non-hemorrhagic white matter stroke, focusing on improvements in postural control, body stability, gait pattern, and upper extremity functional abilities, particularly in reaching and grasping tasks. This study employed a case study design involving a four-week physiotherapy intervention based on the New Bobath Concept. Following five therapy sessions, notable improvements were observed, including enhanced body posture, improved postural control, increased weight-bearing on the left (affected) side, correction of the circumduction gait pattern, and improved upper limb functional performance in reaching and grasping tasks. Physiotherapy intervention using the New Bobath Concept demonstrated beneficial effects in enhancing postural alignment, improving postural control, facilitating weight-bearing on the affected side, correcting gait abnormalities, and increasing upper extremity function in a patient with hemiplegia due to non-hemorrhagic white matter stroke.

Abstract

Stroke is classified into two main types based on its pathophysiology, namely ischemic stroke and hemorrhagic stroke. Ischemic stroke, also known as non-hemorrhagic stroke, occurs due to reduced blood and oxygen to the brain and often results in motor impairments such as hemiparesis, postural control deficits, abnormal gait patterns, and decreased selective movement ability. Damage to the basal ganglia plays a signicant role in movement coordination disorders following stroke. This study aimed to determina the effectiveness of physiotherapy management using the New Bobath Concept in improving postural control, gait patterns, and selective movement ability in a patient with left hemiparesis caused by ischemic stroke unvolving the right posterior basal ganglia. This study employed a case study design. Physiotherapy intervention was conducted using New Bobath Concept over six therapy session within a four-week period. Postural control was assessed using a postural grid, gait pattern changes were analyzed through gait pattern analysis, and selective movement ability was evaluated using the Modofied Motor Assessment Scale (MMAS). The results demostrated improvements in postural control and gait patterns, indicated by a reduction in circumduction during walking. Associative reaction movement began to decrease, although they were still briefly observed during the stance and swing phase. Selective upper extremity movement abiluty also improved, with MMAS scores increasing from 28 at the initial assessment (T1) to 42 at the final assessment (T6). These findings suggest that physiotherapy intervention using New Bobath Concept is effective in improving postural control, enhancing gait patterns, and increasing selective movement ability in patients with hemiparesis following ischemic stroke. The New Bobath Concept can be considered a relevant therapeutic approach in post-stroke rehabilitation to optimize functional recovery.

Abstract

Background: Femur fracture is damage to the continuity of the femur bone which can be caused by direct trauma, muscle fatigue, or certain other conditions such as bone degeneration/osteoporosis. Objective: The ORIF technique is a surgical technique used to treat fractures by installing internal fixation in the form of plates and screws or nails. Method: This study employed a case study design involving a 56-year-old patient with post-ORIF proximal femur fracture. Exercise therapy was administered over six sessions within three weeks. Outcome measures included the Visual Analog Scale (VAS), goniometer, Manual Muscle Testing (M-MMT), anthropometric measurements, Berg Balance Scale (BBS), 30-second Chair Stand Test, Harris Hip Score (HHS), and Barthel Index. The results were a reduction in tenderness and movement pain, an increase in lower extremity muscle strength and joint range of motion in the right hip, increased balance, endurance, and increased hip functional ability. However, no changes were found in their daily independence. Conclusion: Exercise therapy given to patients with post-ORIF femur fractures can help reduce tenderness and movement pain, increase lower extremity muscle strength, increase dextra hip ROM, increase endurance, and increase hip functionality. However, there is little change in ADL abilities.

Abstract

Study purpose. Examine the effects of Kinesiology Taping (KT) on sports performance in order to evaluate its effectiveness for enhancing performance. However, its effectiveness remains controversial. This systematic review will attempt to clarify the available evidence on the effects of kinesiology taping (KT) on sprint and vertical jump performance in athletes. Materials and methods. In order to evaluate the effects of KT on sprint and jump performance in athletes, a systematic search for prospective as well as retrospective studies was conducted on PubMed and Google Scholar until March 2026. Abstract

Study purpose. Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) are highly prevalent among office workers and have been associated with reduced work productivity. However, evidence examining both ergonomic risk and work productivity simultaneously among university employees remains limited, especially in developing countries. This study aimed to identify potential risk factors for WMSDs and examine their association with work productivity among university employees. Materials and methods. This exploratory cross-sectional study involved 30 university employees selected through purposive sampling. WMSDs were assessed using the Nordic Body Map (NBM), and productivity (including absenteeism and presenteeism) was measured with the World Health Organization-Health and Work Performance Questionnaire (HPQ). Ergonomic risk was evaluated using the Rapid Office Strain Assessment (ROSA). Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, as well as Fisher’s Exact and Mann-Whitney U tests (p<0.05). Results. The most common WMSDs were low back pain (LBP) (70%), upper neck pain (UNP) (66.7%), and right shoulder pain (RSP) (53.3%). Ergonomic risk was significantly associated with LBP (p=0.021). UNP was associated with lower work performance (p=0.038) and increased absenteeism (p=0.013), while LBP was also associated with higher absenteeism (p=0.037). Conclusions. These findings suggest that WMSDs, particularly in the neck and lower back, are associated with reduced work productivity. Improving workplace ergonomics may help reduce these issues and enhance work performance.
