Abstract

Due to its significance in fostering 21st-century skills, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education has rapidly evolved across the country. However, designing effective and meaningful STEM-based lessons is still challenging, especially at the elementary school level. Thus, future elementary teachers should be trained to develop integrated STEM-based lesson plans. This research aims to explore the quality of STEM-based lessons designed by pre-service elementary teachers. This study analyzed six STEM-based lesson plans created by 32 preservice elementary teachers as a final group project in the STEM Learning in Elementary School course. Employing a descriptive analysis method, the study evaluated the lesson plans using STEM Integration Curriculum Assessment (STEM-ICA) indicators to shed light on the lesson design quality. Findings reveal varying scores across STEM-ICA indicators, emphasizing ideal science integration but indicating room for improvement in mathematics integration within the lesson. Assessment alignment and the need for stronger connections in engineering design activities are highlighted. This contributes to discussions on enhancing preparation programs for high-quality STEM educators in elementary schools.

Abstract

One of the characteristics of a healthy environment is an environment that is free of waste. Waste itself can be defined as the remaining waste of products that have been processed or consumed and are no longer used. This problem can be sustainable if not handled wisely because it can lead to water and air pollution, an increase in greenhouse gases, and the spread of disease. As an effort to deal with waste, especially household waste, students carry out community service as a form of output from the implementation of the Educational Professional Strengthening Program (P3K) which is carried out at SDN 1 Munjuljaya with the target of all school residents and student guardians by implementing the Zero Food Waste program through ecoenzyme products. This service aims to invite the school community to utilize the remaining household waste to make ecoenzyme products to improve the character of environmental care at SDN 1 Munjuljaya. The method used in this activity is socialization with a persuasive approach to educating students and parents to be more concerned about the utilization of organic waste by utilizing ecoenzyme to form the character of environmental care at SDN 1 Munjuljaya.

Abstract

Reading comprehension is a critical yet frequently underexamined competency among pre-service elementary teachers, whose future role requires them to model and scaffold literacy development for young learners. Despite its importance, comprehensive profiling of reading comprehension across all levels of Barrett’s Taxonomy among first-year students in Indonesian teacher education programs remains limited. This study aimed to analyse the reading comprehension profiles of 158 first-semester students in the Elementary School Teacher Education (PGSD) program using a descriptive survey design. Data were collected through a validated reading comprehension test grounded in Barrett’s Taxonomy, comprising five indicators: literal, reorganisation, inferential, evaluation, and appreciation, supplemented by semi-structured interviews with 12 purposively selected students. Descriptive statistical analysis revealed a mean score of 68.58 with a standard deviation of 20.92, placing overall performance in the moderate category. A coefficient of variation of 30.5 per cent indicated considerable within-cohort heterogeneity. Indicator-level analysis showed that literal comprehension was highest (77.85 per cent) and inferential comprehension was lowest (60.60 per cent). These findings reveal a persistent surface-to-depth gradient in reading ability, with students demonstrating competence in basic text retrieval but significant difficulty in higher-order inferential and evaluative thinking. For pre-service teachers, this gap is not merely academic. It directly limits their capacity to foster critical literacy in future classrooms. The study contributes an empirically grounded, indicator-level literacy profile to the limited body of Indonesian PGSD research and calls for targeted, first-year instructional interventions to strengthen higher-order reading comprehension.

Abstract

The main problem underlying this study is the low reading comprehension skills of Grade V elementary school students. This study aims to examine the effect of the Index Card Match (ICM) cooperative learning model assisted by Wordwall media on students' reading comprehension skills, and to compare its improvement with the Student Teams Achievement Divisions (STAD) model assisted by PowerPoint. A quasi-experimental method with a nonequivalent control group design was employed. The sample consisted of 55 students (28 in the experimental class and 27 in the control class), selected through cluster random sampling. Data processing was conducted on test data in the form of pre-test and post-test, supported by non-test data in the form of observation sheets. The results showed a positive and significant effect of 69.3% from the implementation of the ICM cooperative learning model assisted by Wordwall media on students' reading comprehension skills. Furthermore, a significant difference in improvement was found between the two classes (Sig. = 0.000 < 0.05), with the experimental class achieving an N-Gain of 0.56 (moderately effective) and the control class 0.33 (ineffective). Therefore, the Index Card Match cooperative learning model assisted by Wordwall media is proven to be more effective in improving reading comprehension skills of Grade V elementary school students compared to the STAD model assisted by PowerPoint.

Abstract

Currently the integration of Computational Thinking (CT) has been promoted into learning since elementary school due to technology advancement. However, prospective elementary school teachers in Indonesia lack sufficient experience in implementing CT into practice, leading to unpreparedness in teaching these skills to students in the future. STEM Education course provide a strategic platform to equip prospective elementary school teachers with hands-on experience in developing CT. Robotics integration enable combination of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in one unit, and also provides project-based problem-solving experiences that can enhance CT. Through a quasi-experimental design, this study explore the effectiveness of robotics integration in STEM Education course in improving prospective elementary school teachers' CT. A total of 95 prospective elementary teachers comprised the study sample, which was selected purposively. The Computational Thinking Scale, with twenty-two items, was tested and found to be valid and reliable. Mixed ANOVA analysis indicates that STEM-based robotics course had a significant effect on improving elements of CT that includes problem-solving and critical thinking indicators. Meanwhile, the treatment effects on creativity, algorithmic thinking, and cooperativeness were minimal, indicating that these three indicators did not significantly influenced by the intervention

Abstract

This study was motivated by the low level of science literacy among elementary school students, particularly regarding the topic of light and its properties. Students are not sufficiently engaged in the learning process, resulting in incomplete mastery of the material. This study aims to determine the effect of a Problem-Based Learning model supplemented with a pop-up book and to assess improvements in science literacy between students who received this model and those who received the scientific inquiry approach. This study employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental method and a non-equivalent control group design. The population consisted of 72 fifth-grade students at SDN Sarimulya 3. The sample comprised 24 students from Class V-A as the experimental group and 24 students from Class V-C as the control group. Data were collected through pre-test and post-test assessments and analyzed using the N-Gain test, simple linear regression, and the independent samples t-test. The results showed that the problem-based learning model aided by pop-up books had a significant effect on science literacy, with R = 0.753, R-squared = 0.567, and a significance value of 0.000 < 0.05. Furthermore, the science literacy of students in the experimental class was higher than that of the control class, with a post-test average of 83.33 and an N-Gain score of 0.59, while the control class had a post-test average of 76.88 and an N-Gain score of 0.42. Thus, the problem-based learning model aided by pop-up books is more effective in improving science literacy than the use of the scientific approach.
