Abstract

Pediculus humanus capitis (head lice) is an obligate ectoparasite. Preparation of specimens is a procedure carried out to accurately preserve, identify, and analyze head lice. The Palangka Raya Biology Teachers Forum (MGMP) has collaborated with the Community Service Team of the Biology Study Program. This activity aims to improve high school Biology teachers' skills in preserving Pediculus humanus capitis (morphological observation and identification). This provides a solution to make school laboratory practicals more attractive, as preserved specimens can be stored and used long-term. The activity was offline at the PPIIG Building Laboratory, Palangka Raya University, in August 2023. The activity included lectures, discussions, training, and pre-test and post-test evaluation. The evaluation results show an increase in scores after the training, with an average pre-test score of 50.00 increasing to 80.33 in the post-test. It can be concluded that participants' knowledge increased after attending this training.

Abstract

Fasciola sp. a parasite which impacts ruminants including cattle, cause of the zoonotic disease fascioliosis. This study aims to describe the fasciolosis parasite in sacrificial animals on the Palangka Raya University campus in July–August 2023. This research is a descriptive exploratory study by examining the feces and livers of 15 samples of sacrificial animals with native methode. The results of the diagnosis of fasciolosis are based on the presence of Fasciola sp. eggs in the feces of sacrificed animals and the discovery of the parasite Fasciola sp. in the liver during post-mortem examination. The development of liver lesions in the form of inflammation and calcification brought on by the existence of Fasciola sp. was a defining characteristic of positively infected liver samples by worm infestations. Fasciola sp. eggs were found in the fecal samples with ovoid morphological characteristics, having an operculum at one pole, thin and smooth walls, and yellowish brown. The presence of Fasciola sp. being influenced by environmental factors, it is also heavily influenced by management factors, the majority of breeders in Palangka Raya take grass in watery areas where there are snails as intermediate hosts. This information can be a recommendation to the livestock service and to breeders to provide feed that is free of hosts and metacercariae of Fasciola sp. in Palangka Raya City.

Abstract

Kutu kepala (Pediculus humanus capitis) merupakan jenis serangga ektoparasit obligat dan infestasi kutu kepala di rambut manusia disebut Pedikulosis kapitis. Kasus kutu kepala paling banyak ditemukan pada siswa-siswa di sekolah yang dapat menyebabkan gangguan kesehatan dan psikologi pada penderitanya. Kegiatan ini bertujuan menawarkan solusi terhadap kasus yang dijumpai di sekolah–sekolah melalui pelatihan kepada guru SMA di Palangka Raya. MGMP Biologi Palangka Raya telah bekerjasama dengan tim pengabdian. Metode pelatihan ini meliputi penyampaian materi tentang pengenalan, identifikasi, dan pengendalian Pediculus humanus capitis. Selanjutnya dibuka sesi diskusi dan dilanjutkan pelatihan identifikasi. Untuk mengukur ketercapaian tujuan pelatihan maka di awal dan di akhir pelatihan peserta diberikan pre-test dan post-test. Hasil evaluasi menunjukkan peningkatan pengetahuan guru-guru dari rata-rata nilai pre-test sebesar 59,78 menjadi 80,26 pada hasil post-test. Secara umum acara pelatihan berjalan lancar yang mendapatkan partisipasi dan antusias dari peserta pelatihan.

Abstract

Vegetables are an important food source because they contain vitamins and minerals. However, vegetables that are contaminated with intestinal nematode eggs and then consumed raw or not washed and cooked properly can become a medium for transmitting intestinal nematode eggs and cause worms. Worms are included in the category of neglected tropical diseases (Neglected Tropical Diseases) where this disease receives little attention and treatment, even though it can cause serious health problems, especially in children, it can cause growth disorders. The purpose of this study was to determine the presence of intestinal nematode eggs in various types of vegetables, namely basil (Ocimum sanctum), kale (Ipomoea aquatica), spinach (Amaranthus tricolor) and lettuce (Lactuca sativa) sold in traditional markets in Palangka Raya as an effort to ensure food safety and control parasitic diseases. The study used a descriptive survey method by conducting microscopic examinations in the laboratory, examination of worm eggs was carried out using the flotation method using 0.9% NaCl. The total number of vegetable samples was 20 samples. The results showed that vegetable samples were contaminated with intestinal nematode eggs with a percentage of positive vegetable samples contaminated with intestinal nematode eggs of 8 samples (40%) and negative samples of 12 (60%). The species of intestinal nematodes that contaminate are Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura and Enterobius vermicularis. The results of this study can add information to always maintain food hygiene, especially vegetables that will be consumed

Abstract

Ramin (Gonystylus bancanus Miq. Kurz) is one of the typical woody plants that live in peat swamp forest ecosystems, especially in Central Kalimantan. Ramin plants have endophytic fungi that live in plant cells that can contaminate tissue culture propagation. In addition, endophytic fungi in ramin plants have not been widely studied, both in terms of characterization and potential. This study aimed to identify and analyze endophytic fungi residing in ramin plants. The methods used were media preparation and tool preparation, isolation of endophytic fungi, macro- and microscopic characterization of endophytic fungi, and data analysis. This study successfully isolated five endophytic fungi from G. bancanus plants, including 4 isolates (BR1, BR2, BR3, BR4) derived from stems and 1 isolate (BDR) derived from stems and leaves. The characters of these endophytic fungi are white and black in color, smooth and rough texture, and hyphae with and without hyphae (asepta). Endophytic fungi in ramin plants pose a challenge for propagating ramin tissue culture because they become contaminants. However, endophytic fungi certainly have their own benefits in the bodies of ramin plants and other potential benefits for humans. This research can serve as an initial study to determine the potential of endophytic fungi in ramin plants and to provide new information on handling contaminants in ramin plant tissue culture.
