Abstract

Ethnomathematics is the study of how people from different cultures understand, interpret, and use mathematical concepts. Meanwhile, various studies have highlighted the beauty and symbolism of geometric aspects in mosque architecture, but there are still limited studies examining how these geometric elements can be used as learning media. This study aims to explore geometric concepts in the architecture of the Sultan Thaf Sinar Basarsyah Grand Mosque and examine its application as a contextual mathematics learning resource. The methods used include direct observation, semi-structured interviews, and visual documentation with a descriptive qualitative approach. This study uses an interactive model data analysis technique proposed by Miles and Huberman (1994). The results show that the mosque building contains geometric elements such as circles, semicircles, squares, rectangles, rhombuses, and cylinders that have cultural symbolic meaning and religious aesthetics. This study recommends that mathematics learning increasingly utilize architectural heritage as an interesting and educational learning medium, thereby strengthening cultural identity while supporting the development of mathematical conceptual abilities in a more contextual and meaningful manner.

Abstract

Computational thinking is an essential competency for pre-service teachers to meet the challenges of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and Society 5.0. As future elementary school teachers, students enrolled in the Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Teacher Education Program (Pendidikan Guru Madrasah Ibtidaiyah/PGMI) need to develop computational thinking skills because they will be responsible for fostering students’ learning and problem-solving abilities. However, there is still a lack of in-depth qualitative studies examining the computational thinking processes of male and female pre-service teachers based on the computational thinking framework proposed by Jeannette Wing. Therefore, this study aimed to describe the computational thinking abilities of PGMI pre-service teachers from a gender perspective. This study employed a qualitative descriptive approach. Two participants, NS and DA, were selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using the 2019 Bebras test, interview protocols, and observation sheets. The findings revealed that both participants demonstrated similar computational thinking abilities. In solving the two Bebras tasks, both participants successfully demonstrated all four computational thinking components, namely decomposition, pattern recognition, abstraction, and algorithmic thinking.

Class X students (n=150) were involved as research subjects as a population. Types of pseudo-experimental research with a quantitative approach. This research sample was taken using a stratified random sampling technique. The sample was divided into two groups, namely the experimental group consisting of 30 students who studied with Problem-Based Adaptive Learning and the control group consisting of 30 students who studied with conventional learning. This research is semi-experimental and the instrument is a concept understanding test. Data processing techniques include normality tests, homogeneity tests and independent sample t-tests with the help of the IBM SPSS Statistics 30 and Microsoft Excel programs. Based on the results of descriptive statistical tests, it was found that the average score for problem-based adaptive learning was 84.47 (SD=3,910) , while the average score for conventional learning was 89.40 (SD=2,513).  The results of data analysis show that there is a significant difference between students who learn through problem-based adaptive learning and conventional learning, with a significance value of 0.12 > 0.05, which means H1 is accepted and H0 is rejected.  So there is an influence of problem-based adaptive learning on the understanding of mathematical concepts of Class X students at SMA Negeri 1 Pantai Labu in the 2024/2025 academic year.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effect of the Think Pair Share (TPS) type of cooperative learning model on students’ conceptual understanding of mathematics, specifically on the topic of Three-Variable Linear Equation Systems. The research was conducted at SMAS Budisatrya Medan using a quantitative approach with an experimental method and a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group design. The sample consisted of 64 tenth-grade students divided into two groups: an experimental class that received instruction using the Think Pair Share model, and a control class that was taught through conventional methods. The pretest results indicated that the average initial score of students in the experimental class was 6.62, while the control class averaged 5.50. After the intervention, the posttest scores increased to 17.75 in the experimental class and 14.00 in the control class. The difference in score improvement was statistically significant, as evidenced by a t-test result of t = 6.387 with a significance level of p = 0.000. These findings suggest that the Think Pair Share model significantly enhances students’ conceptual understanding of mathematics compared to traditional teaching methods. The researchers recommend the use of this model as an effective alternative for mathematics instruction, as it not only improves learning outcomes but also fosters social interaction, critical thinking, and students’ self-confidence.
