Abstract

The issue of sanitation and water pollution due to fecal waste has become a serious concern in Indonesia, particularly after it was revealed that approximately 70% of the community's drinking water sources are contaminated with human feces. Determining safe waste management requirements necessitates indicators confirming the contamination-free nature of the waste management methods. Pathogen testing indicators for fecal waste are highly diverse. The current standard testing is the culture-based method for microorganisms and microscopy observation for helminths. However, molecular detection tools for these pathogens can give higher sensitivity and specificity in a relatively shorter time of technical processing. In this research, we designed primers for molecular-based diagnostics on three pathogens exhibiting extreme survival capabilities under various environmental conditions. The species-coupled genes are AmpC for Escherichia coli, AAC for Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and RNR3 for Ascaris lumbricoides. The design of molecular-based biomarkers and their specificity tests were conducted using web-based bioinformatics programs to prevent unintended dimers. Ultimately, primers were validated by conventional gradient PCR on available positive controls and a sample from processed fecal sludge. The PCR validation test showed that the designed primers were validated to amplify the intended target with the right size without unspecific bands on the positive controls. Meanwhile, the AAC gene for E. coli was detected in the sample from the fecal sludge.

Abstract

Permasalahan sampah plastik menjadi isu global yang memerlukan solusi inovatif dan berkelanjutan. Plastik yang sulit terurai menyebabkan pencemaran lingkungan, terutama di kawasan perkotaan. Salah satu alternatif dalam pengelolaan sampah plastik adalah melalui pemanfaatan Eco Brick, yaitu botol plastik yang diisi dengan sampah anorganik untuk dijadikan bahan atau material sebagai bahan baku produk furniture ramah lingkungan. Pengabdian ini bertujuan untuk memberikan informasi atau sosialisi kepada masyarakat terkait pengolahan limbah anorganik menjadi Eco Brick sebagai bahan dasar pembuatan furniture yang kuat, estetis, dan fungsional, serta memiliki nilai ekonomi. Kegiatan ini dilaksanakan di BTN Bumi Roviga RT 03 RW 11, Kelurahan Tondo, Kota Palu. Hasil pengabdian menunjukkan bahwa masyarakat Bumi Roviga memperoleh pengetahuan baru terkait cara mengolah dan memanfaatkan sampah anorganik seperti plastik dan botol mineral sebagai bahan untuk membuat produk furniture yang bernilai tambah dan tentunya berkontribusi dalam penurunan sampah di wilayah sekitar.

Abstract

Proper environmental sanitation is an essential component in ensuring a healthy and safe quality of life for communities. Taipa Subdistrict in Palu City has experienced significant growth in infrastructure and population; however, challenges remain in the areas of sanitation and household waste management. This study aims to evaluate the environmental sanitation conditions in Taipa and their impact on public health. The research employed a descriptive quantitative method using a survey approach conducted on 512 households through field observations, interviews, and questionnaires. The results revealed that most residents rely on bore wells as their main sources of clean water and drinking water, while the use of piped water (PDAM) remains limited. Nearly all households have access to healthy latrines and use septic tanks for fecal waste disposal. However, the management of used cooking oil and the practice of open burning of waste remain environmental concerns that require attention. The majority of houses have floors and walls that meet environmental health standards. These findings indicate that although basic sanitation has been categorized as fairly adequate, efforts in public education and improvement of waste management systems are still needed to ensure sustainable environmental health in the community.

Abstract

Aktivitas transportasi yang menggunakan kendaraan berbahan bakar fosil menyumbang pencemaran udara dalam bentuk gas dan partikel. Kualitas udara yang buruk di wilayah perkotaan umumnya disebabkan oleh tingginya kadar polutan dari emisi gas buang kendaraan, baik milik pribadi maupun umum. Salah satu kota yang mengalami peningkatan signifikan dalam jumlah kendaraan adalah Kota Makassar. Bertambahnya jumlah kendaraan bermotor berdampak pada meningkatnya emisi yang mencemari lingkungan dan membahayakan kesehatan masyarakat. Salah satu jenis polutan yang dihasilkan kendaraan bermotor adalah Total Suspended Particulate (TSP). Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengevaluasi tingkat konsentrasi TSP dalam udara ambien serta hubungannya dengan kecepatan angin. Data diperoleh melalui pengukuran langsung menggunakan alat High Volume Air Sampler (HVAS). Penelitian dilakukan pada enam ruas jalan di Kota Makassar selama tiga waktu sibuk (peak hour) setiap harinya di masing-masing lokasi. Hasil pengukuran menunjukkan bahwa konsentrasi TSP tertinggi mencapai 398,67 ?g/Nm³, yang tercatat di Jalan Perintis Kemerdekaan. Angka ini melebihi ambang batas kualitas udara ambien berdasarkan Peraturan Pemerintah Republik Indonesia No. 41 Tahun 1999. Analisis korelasi antara kecepatan angin dan konsentrasi TSP menunjukkan adanya hubungan yang cukup kuat, dengan nilai korelasi sebesar 0,709.

Abstract

Soil contamination by the heavy metal lead (Pb) poses a significant threat to public health and ecosystems. This study evaluated the effectiveness of the ex-situ biopile method for remediating Pb-contaminated soil at the Kawatuna Landfill, Palu City. Soil samples were collected from the contaminated site and treated in a biopile prototype with controlled aeration and moisture, with the addition of compost as an amendment at 10% (w/w). Laboratory analyses conducted at the Integrated Laboratory of Tadulako University showed a decrease in total Pb concentration from 41.96 mg/kg to 31.83 mg/kg after seven days of treatment. This corresponds to a removal efficiency of 24.13% and an average degradation rate of 1.45 mg/kg·day. These results indicate that the biopile method is capable of reducing Pb concentrations in soil during the initial stage of treatment; however, optimization of treatment duration and operational conditions is required to achieve regulatory soil quality standards. Furthermore, the use of locally sourced compost as a nutrient amendment and the absence of secondary waste generation support the biopile method as an environmentally friendly and cost-effective soil remediation technology.

Abstract

The home-based tempeh industry faces serious challenges in managing liquid waste containing pollutants such as Total Suspended Solid (TSS), ammonia, turbidity, and pH that exceed quality standards. This study aims to determine the decrease in pollutant levels in tempeh industry liquid waste with a combination of coffee grounds and rice husk adsorbents, and to determine the effect of giving variations in adsorbent mass on the value of pollutant parameters in tempeh industry liquid waste. The method used was quantitative experimental with waste samples from Monas Tempe Factory. The adsorbent mass variations tested were 1:1, 1:2, and 2:1, with a total dose of 8 grams per 500 ml of waste, and the adsorption process was carried out with magnetic stirring for 30 minutes at 300 rpm. The results showed that the adsorbent combination was effective in reducing TSS and ammonia, with the highest TSS reduction reaching 53.42% and ammonia 67.33% in the 1:2 variation. The maximum adsorption capacity for TSS was 4330 mg/g and for ammonia 127.50 mg/g. However, this treatment also caused an increase in turbidity (-19937.50%) and pH (-16.88%). The Freundlich isotherm model is more suitable to explain the adsorption process, indicating that adsorption is favorable and occurs physically with multilayer. Although this combination was effective in reducing TSS and ammonia, there were limitations in dealing with turbidity and pH.

Abstract

Domestic wastewater treatment often faces challenges due to high concentrations of organic matter and dissolved solids that can pollute the environment if left untreated. This study aims to evaluate the performance of a honeycomb biofilter in reducing key wastewater pollutants. The method applied was a laboratory-scale experiment using a small-scale WWTP system equipped with a honeycomb biofilter unit. The treatment results showed a significant reduction of BOD from 56 mg/L to 4.15 mg/L (92% efficiency), COD from 224 mg/L to 5 mg/L (97% efficiency), and TDS from 290 mg/L to 194 mg/L (30% efficiency). All parameters meet the quality standards. However, pH decreased from 7.4 to 4.4 (40% reduction), indicating the need for a pH adjustment unit before final discharge. In conclusion, the honeycomb biofilter proved effective in reducing organic load and dissolved solids, although integration with a pH neutralization unit is required to comply with environmental standards.

Abstract

enelitian biomonitoring kualitas udara dengan bioindikator lumut semakin berkembang sebagai alternatif metode pemantauan konvensional yang umumnya membutuhkan biaya tinggi, peralatan canggih, dan tenaga ahli. Studi ini bertujuan membandingkan efektivitas dua jenis lumut, yaitu lumut hati Marchantia polymorpha dan lumut gambut Sphagnum spp., dalam menyerap logam berat timbal (Pb) pada lingkungan dengan tingkat pencemaran lalu lintas berbeda di Kota Palu, Sulawesi Tengah. Penggunaan lumut dipilih karena kemampuannya menyerap polutan langsung dari atmosfer melalui permukaan tubuh tanpa adanya sistem pembuluh atau kutikula pelindung. Penelitian dilakukan dengan dua pendekatan lokasi. Marchantia polymorpha digunakan pada kawasan SPBU Pertamina Martadinata yang memiliki intensitas lalu lintas tinggi. Sementara itu, Sphagnum spp. ditempatkan pada kawasan lampu merah Jalan Suprapto, Besusu Tengah, yang merupakan titik akumulasi emisi kendaraan bermotor. Selain mengukur akumulasi timbal, penelitian ini juga menganalisis faktor lingkungan seperti suhu, kelembaban, kecepatan angin, curah hujan, dan arah angin untuk melihat pengaruh kondisi mikroklimat terhadap penyerapannya. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa M. polymorpha, dengan permukaan talus yang lebar, mampu mengakumulasi timbal secara efektif di lingkungan urban tropis yang terpapar polutan kendaraan. Di sisi lain, Sphagnum spp. memiliki sel hialin yang mampu menyerap air dan logam berat dengan lebih tinggi, sehingga responsif terhadap perubahan kelembaban dan kondisi mikroklimat. Temuan ini menegaskan bahwa kedua jenis lumut merupakan bioindikator efektif dengan keunggulan masing-masing, dan berpotensi digunakan sebagai metode biomonitoring yang murah, praktis, serta mendukung pengendalian pencemaran udara di kawasan perkotaan.
