The existence of a cement company in a rural area may influence the local people, including women who are not employed by the company. This study aims at presenting the case of women empowerment in a Ring-1 area of a cement company in Indonesia. The research used qualitative approach. The results show that the company’s existence with its CSR programs have helped empowering rural women in social, educational, religious, organizational, and economic aspects. The social aspect is shown in the health programs. The educational aspect can be seen in the provision of scholarships for formal education and non-formal training. The religious aspect is actualized in the form of incentives for religion teachers and religious festivals. The organizational aspect is shown in the involvement of women in PKM management. Finally, the economic aspect includes: a) the construction of village road infrastructure as compensation of taxes derived from the company; b) the inclusion of workers from outside the village encourages the emergence of food stalls, grocery stalls, gasoline kiosks, and boarding houses; and c) the development of traditional markets. This study confirms that the company’s existence has encouraged rural women to improve their livelihoods and help alleviate their families from poverty.

Abstract

One of the strategies to address the issue of poverty in rural areas is by empowering women. East Java provincial government, Indonesia, has allocated grants for women’s co-operatives in rural areas since 2015, in the same year of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) launch. This study describes the pattern of credit use in the women’s co-operative and its impact on low-income family livelihoods. The research was conducted at two women’s co-operatives in Plumpang District, Tuban Regency, Indonesia, from October 2017 to May 2018 using the qualitative approach. The data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, focus group discussion, and survey about the co-operative members’ credit use. This study found that the co-operative members used the loans for daily needs, tuition fees, agricultural activities, and non-farming economic activities. The co-operative has increased children’s participation in low-income family informal education and strengthens social capital among poor people in rural areas; however, the co-operative still cannot cut the chain between low-income families and moneylenders the village. Consequently, further development of co-operatives in terms of quality and quantity is necessary for achieving the SDGs.

Abstract

The main problems of small farmers who plant melons in open and intensive agricultural land are capital, technology, and markets. One way to overcome the problem is by establishing contract farming with a sponsor. Relationships with sponsors do not always benefit economically. For this purpose, this study was carried out on the indicators that determine the sustainability of contract farming between melon farmers and sponsors in Klotok Village, Plumpang District, Tuban Regency, Indonesia. The study was conducted using a combination of qualitative and quantitative approaches. The results showed that of the three contract farming indicators, equity has the highest correlation value (0.302). It illustrates that the equality of farmers and sponsors is a crucial aspect for the sustainability of farming contracts. Even the dimensions of mutual benefit have low correlation values (0.296). It was shown by some farmers who suffered losses but did not break relations with the sponsors. This study concludes that the presence of sponsors plays an important role in the activities of melon farmers. The sustainability of melon farmers can drive rural economic activities and can further improve the welfare of the rural population.

Abstract

This study elaborates on the creativity of melon farmers to overcome problems and gain benefits in this inherently high-risk farming. The research was conducted in the villages of Plumpang District, an area in East Java known for its quality melon produce. Data were collected from 100 respondents from these villages. Respondents were selected purposively by considering demographic and farming characteristics. The relationship between contract farming and farmer creativity was examined using Spearman Rank analysis. Statistical test confirms the relationship between contract farming practices and melon farmers’ creativity. The low correlation is due to the determining factor, namely, extreme climatic conditions, which have a damaging impact on crops. Furthermore, an increase in investment ranks first among the nine indicators of farmer creativity. This implies that contract farming practice is highly correlated with increased investment. Moreover, the majority (75%) of farmers’ profit from contract farming increases investment. This study concludes that these creative farmers empowered by contract farming promote economic activity in rural areas. These findings will be useful as a starting point for future research on the effects of contract farming as a driver of economic activity and its subsequent contribution to the sustainability of rural development.

Abstract

The recurring flash floods in Ijen District, Bondowoso, has caused damage to houses and villages infrastructures. Flood handling requires coordination from multiple stakeholders, social enterprises and Non-Governmental Organizations. This study explores the stakeholders' involvement in the emergency response of flash flood disaster handling in the Ijen District. This study used qualitative and quantitative approaches. The study found that these stakeholders have their own aims and interests. The analysts predict that the power index value is 0.74, while the interest index value is 0.94. These two figures show that both the power and the interests of the stakeholders are very high in dealing with flash flood disasters. Despite the high values, until August 2020, the recovery process had not been completed yet. These findings are important as an evaluation of the emergency response in disaster handling and a warning that it is important to sustain the environmental condition of mountain slopes
