Abstract

The book of Job presents us with a shocking story of a righteous man. He does everything what the Law says. Yet, he suffers. He looks for the answer of his suffering and finds nothing satisfactory. Uniquely, in chapter 7, the protagonist laments. The form of his lamentation somehow reminds its readers a poem similar to Psalm 8. However, there is a big contrast. Psalm 8 is a joyful hymn. Psalm 8 expresses mans confidence in Gods faithful love. Yet, Job 7 contains a distress of man who experiences God as a cruel watchman. He feels that his life is completely under Gods surveillance that makes him suffocated. Based on its literary genre, Job 7 is considered as a parody. Parody works by adapting a previously popular literary work into a new one, but with different intentions. In this paper, the intention of Jobs author is going to be examined. Through the short analysis of its literary form, what can be found is that the author of Job 7 purposefully conveys a sharp criticism to the general notion of the Wisdom Tradition of that era. The Wisdom Tradition emphasizes much on the faith in God based on the relation between punishment and reward. This emphasis has reduced the complexity of human suffering.

Abstract

This article aims at investigating the craftiness of wicked merchants as illustrated in the Book of Amos chapter 8:4-8. By employing a close reading as a chosen approach to that particular text, it will be discussed how corruptive minds of those merchants preceed their unjust acts. A close reading is a synchronic approach that Mfocuses on every detail of the story, in particular on the plot and the characterization. Every word coming from the mouth of a character, enhanced with his action, carries significant weight and thus contributes to the fuller description of his personality. This article, therefore, is interested in examining the inner thought of these cunning merchants. In chapter 8:4-8, they deliberately set the poor in a trap, even when these miserable people cannot afford to buy the refuse of the wheat. Then, as calculated by these evil merchants, the poor have to sell themselves in order to have something to eat. This article also aims at showing the reader that for the author of the Book of Amos, corruptive minds of those merchants degrade human dignity. Such a corruptive mentality leads to a larger social injustice. It seems that this author wants remind the reader to be cautious whenever a corruptive mind begins to occupy one’s thought.

Abstract

This article examines a proverbial saying "Wisdom is a tree of life" (Prov. 3:18) through the lens of conceptual metaphor. Such a metaphor works by mapping two conceptual domains. The direction goes from the SOURCE domain (an ancient myth of a miraculous tree that whets human’s appetite for eternal youth) to the TARGET domain (a concept of wisdom in life). Conceptual metaphor helps us to understand that the tree metaphor in Prov. 3:18 instills in the readers’ mind a kind of reward powerful enough to motivate them to pursue wisdomand to persevere in that quest. The boon will arouse their desire so that they will do anything. This article also suggests that the tree metaphor in Proverbs receives its fuller sense through Prov. 11:30; 13:12; 15:4. Conceptual metaphor, thus, enables the reader to notice a holistic presentation of the book of Proverbs, which has been all too often considered as a compilation of various self-contained sayings. Kata-kata Kunci: metafora stilistika, metafora konseptual, hikmat, pohon kehidupan, ganjaran

Abstract

This article aims at examining a fighting spirit that characterizes the Canaanite woman in Matthew 15:21-28 as a source of inspiration for Christian education addressed to the youth. It focuses on her choice of actions and of words, especially shown in verses 25 and 27. In order to do so, it employs a narrative method that takes seriously every detail related to her performance. It tries to understand how her struggle emerges and why Jesus says that she has a great faith. After discussing the subject matter in several points, this article comes to a conclusion that the element of faith first of all lies on the human side, namely a fighting spirit, a spiritual entrance to receive God's mercy. Pope Francis states that a fighting spirit is visible when Christian believers, especially young people "always try to find their true identity, be themselves, and be creative in pursuing holiness in living life in the world. (CV, art. 161)”. The second theological message is that God understands and cares for everyone, especially those who ask for His help. The third theological message is that God's grace gives changing for everyone. It means that God's grace makes our identity in life more pleasing to Him

Abstract

How can Qohelet in the book of Ecclesiastes give us a new perspective on the modern understanding of the meaning of life? For us to answer this question, the paper attempts to investigate the concept of the word commonly translated as ‘absurd,’ ‘worthless,’ or ‘meaningless’ used by Qohelet, originally a Hebrew word הבל (hbl). In order to clarify Qohelet's perspective of life’s meaning, the paper uses a word study on הבל (hbl). The paper aims to discuss that הבל (hbl) can properly be read as a symbolic metaphor which is ‘vapor’ that can have varying degrees of meaning which include insubstantiality, transience, and foulness. By understanding Qohelet's concept of הבל (hbl) as a symbolic metaphor, the paper elucidates how to better understand the perspective of the book of Ecclesiastes on the meaning of life as it squares with Viktor Frankl’s theory of logotherapy, a leading contemporary view of life’s meaning in modern existential philosophy. Finally, the paper encourages a new examination of life's intricacies and aims to provide insights that resonate with today's meaning-seekers by tying the book of Ecclesiastes to the writings of Viktor Frankl. Each of our life journeys is unique, nevertheless, the paper provides a new perspective and suggests common values for which we all can travel forward in life to seek meaning in our daily lives.

Abstract

Luke 7:1–10 is frequently seen as a story of a miraculous cure. Yet, if we examine more closely, it seems that the text tells of a person’s growing faith, which cannot be isolated from his social surroundings. On the one hand, faith is a matter of one’s connection with God, making it a personal affair. On the other hand, faith is communal since it involves interaction with many people as faith grows. In the text, we encounter three main characters who are trying to participate in bringing a servant healed, through their respective expressions of faith. The first one is the Roman centurion, who commands two different groups to converse with Jesus: some Jewish elders (v.3) and his friends (v.6). These Jewish elders are the second character, and they thank the centurion for being their benefactor (v.5). His friends, who make up the third character, convey his personal long message directly to Jesus (vv. 6-8). This article is interested in examining the intersections between the centurion’s personal faith and the communal faith of these two groups. By employing a narrative criticism, that is a characterization, this article explores how Luke portrays the Roman centurion’s development of faith and how that leads to him influencing the communal faith of the Jewish elders and his friends.ABSTRAK Teks Lukas 7:1-10 umumnya dibaca sebagai kisah mukjizat penyembuhan.

Abstract

The book of Amos, chapter 4:1-3, illustrates Amos's strategic choice in rebuking the government officials who indulge in luxury. Amos compares these elites to the cows of Bashan. Through rhetorical critique of that passage, this article aims to analyze the motives why Amos deliberately uses the metaphor the cows of Bashan. Amos wants his criticism that he conveys to be right on target to his interlocutors. He recognized that his interlocutors were not ordinary people; they were part of the elite class accustomed to luxurious lifestyles. Taking advantage of their husbands' high positions, they enriched themselves while turning a deaf ear to the grievances of the common people. Therefore, this article believes that through the metaphor of the cows of Bashan and the hook punishment, Amos makes a sarcastic satire because it is seen as effective in touching upon the sensitivities of these government officials. Amos chose the metaphor of the cows of Bashan also because of the socio-geographical context that is very close to their lives. Through this sarcastic satire, Amos successfully conveyed his theological message cleverly: that God does not remain silent in reproaching anyone who disregards the marginalized and oppressed.

Abstract

Responding to the needs of students in this digital era, the utilization of educational technology must be welcomed and used properly in the classroom. Flipped Learning (FL) is one of them. The implementation of flipped-learning by involving audio-visual content and the utilization of digital media will certainly help students to further absorb learning materials. Using devices, students can access lecture materials before the meeting. Sanata Dharma University also uses a Learning Management System (LMS) that can be optimized to support this flipped-learning. This paper aims to discuss the application of FL in “Introduction to New Testament” courses at the Faculty of Theology and the evaluation of this method. The method used is participatory observation of the author as lecturers involved in this FL-based learning and also literature study related to the basic concepts of FL to help deliver material to students in this digital era. The results showed that the application of this FL based on Ignatian pedagogy helped students to have an intellectual, participatory, and practical learning experience.
