Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine how students make mistakes when attempting to solve equality and inequality problems in trigonometry and algebra using the Newman method. A qualitative descriptive research methodology is employed in this study. Students enrolled in Manado State University's 2023–2024 Mathematics Education Study Program during their first semester served as the research subjects. Test and interview techniques are used in data collection. Three steps made up the data analysis in this study: reduction, data display, and data verification. Data analysis utilizing the Newman approach yielded the following conclusions: 5.6% encoding errors, 4.8% reading errors, 12% comprehension errors, 8.4% transformation errors, and 18.8% process skill errors were made when solving equation and inequality problems. The inability of pupils to comprehend the concept of the subject being explained, their lack of willingness to study, and their carelessness when reading and completing questions are the causes contributing to these blunders.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to identify whether the average learning outcomes of students who learn using the Problem Based Learning learning model are higher than the average learning outcomes of students who learn using the Direct learning model on Function material. This research is a study that uses a posttest-only control group design. The population of this study were all grade XI students and the samples in this study were grade XI-1 as an experimental class consisting of 25 students and grade XI-2 as a control class consisting of 25 students at SMA Kristen 2 Tomohon in the 2024/2025 school year. The results revealed that there was a difference in the average learning outcomes of students taught using the Problem Based Learning model with students taught using the Direct learning model. Based on the above results, it is concluded that learning by using the Problem Based Learning learning model can improve students' mathematics learning outcomes on function material.

Abstract

This study investigated the relationship between students' mathematical creative thinking skills and their performance in solving mathematical literacy problems. The aim of this research is to understand how students' creativity affects their ability to solve open-ended problems, as well as improve their mathematical literacy. The research design of a qualitative case study was used by involving 30 grade VIII students who were tested through creativity tests and mathematical literacy tasks. The results showed that students with high creative thinking skills were able to demonstrate flexibility, originality, and fluency in problem-solving, which allowed them to apply mathematical concepts in real-life contexts. In contrast, students with low creativity tend to use more mechanical and limited methods of problem-solving. This research highlights the importance of an open-ended, problem-based approach to improving mathematical literacy by developing students' creativity. These findings have implications for developing teaching strategies to facilitate mathematics creativity. Further research should examine integrating technology and other innovative teaching methods to improve students' creative problem-solving skills.

Abstract

This study investigates how the school environment, both physical and non-physical, can support the development of middle school students’ numeracy in Indonesia. Conducted during the Kampus Mengajar program, the study used a mixed methods approach in two junior high schools in North Sulawesi. Environmental interventions included numeracy-themed visual displays, games, and integration of numeracy across subjects and projects. A total of 48 Grade 8 students were involved in pre- and post-tests, supported by interviews and observations. Results showed statistically significant improvements in students’ numeracy scores after the intervention. Qualitative data revealed that students engagement in classroom increased. Moreover, the interventions received positive perceptions from students, teachers, and principals. Both schools faced some challenges, such as space limitations and teachers engagement was mostly limited to those teaching science and mathematics. The findings suggest that designing a school environment, both physical and non-physical, that is numeracy-rich can enhance students' numeracy skills, even with limited resources. Further studies are recommended to explore long-term impacts and broader implementation.
