Abstract

AI-mediated customer communication has become increasingly prevalent in service industries, particularly through the adoption of chatbots as digital communication agents between organizations and consumers. Beyond their functional role in delivering information and assistance, chatbots often incorporate gendered identities that shape how users interpret and engage with digital interactions. In Indonesia, banking and telecommunications companies widely employ female-coded chatbots as part of their customer communication strategies. This study explores consumers’ perceptions of female chatbots and examines how gendered meanings are negotiated within AI-mediated customer communication. Using a qualitative exploratory approach, in-depth interviews were conducted with consumers who had experience interacting with female chatbots in the banking and telecommunications sectors. The findings reveal that participants generally perceive female chatbots as extensions of frontline customer service communication in digital environments. While participants demonstrated varying interpretations of female chatbot representations, they frequently associated these chatbots with characteristics such as friendliness, patience, and helpfulness. The findings also suggest that the predominance of female-coded chatbots may contribute to the normalization and potential reinforcement of gender stereotypes linking women to service-oriented and emotional labor roles. This study contributes to communication scholarship by highlighting how gendered meanings are embedded, interpreted, and negotiated within AI-mediated customer communication.

Abstract

School has always been one of the most vulnerable locations for gender-based verbal violence. The quality of the learning climate in school is not only determined by the teaching staff but also by the students. As one of the leading schools in Ponorogo Regency, 3 State Senior High School Ponorogo is not immune to the practice of gender-based verbal violence, which the school is currently working to eliminate. This study aims to explore the forms of, the levels of students’ understanding and awareness about, and strategies that can be implemented to reduce gender-based verbal violence. A mixed research method was used, involving 50 student participants. Data collection was conducted through pre-test and post-test surveys with 50 students and focus group discussions with 10 selected students. This study found that the practices of gender-based verbal violence are normalized through racist taunts, misogynistic jokes, and gender-stereotypical expressions among students. The survey results showed that participants were still lacked understanding and awareness of gender-based verbal violence in the school environment, but their awareness and understanding increased after participating the socialization session. These findings suggest the need for structured and contextualized education to build a safe, inclusive, and gender-equitable school climate. Keywords: Verbal violence; Gender-based violence; Symbolic violence; School violence; Gender equality

Abstract

Although film rating and review platforms, alongside social media, have rapidly expanded among Generation Z, most existing research examines these platforms in isolation. Consequently, there is limited understanding of their combined influence on contemporary film evaluation practices. This study addresses this gap by investigating how Gen Z audiences in Indonesia engage with these platforms as part of an interconnected digital ecosystem that shapes film selection, evaluation, and cultural participation. Employing a qualitative-descriptive methodology, the study utilizes semi-structured, in-depth interviews with six purposively sampled Gen Z informants who actively use film rating and review platforms (such as IMDb, Letterboxd, and Rotten Tomatoes) and social media. Thematic analysis was conducted to identify recurring patterns in platform use, evaluation practices, and social interaction. Technological determinism serves as the primary analytical framework, further refined by the concept of digital dialectic, which highlights the reciprocal relationship between technological structures and user agency. The findings indicate that film rating and review platforms function not only as evaluative tools but also as social spaces where ratings, reviews, and algorithmic recommendations intersect with social media discourse, collectively shaping evaluation practices. Gen Z audiences are positioned as active participants who negotiate technological affordances while reinforcing platform-driven logics of simplification and visibility. This study contributes to media and film studies by illustrating how platform infrastructures and user practices operate dialectically, transforming film criticism into a participatory and algorithmically mediated cultural practice.
