Abstract

Knowledge is an important determinant of medication-taking behavior among patients with gout, particularly in border communities with limited access to health information. Objective: This study examined the relationship between knowledge level and appropriate gout medication use among patients receiving allopurinol in Seluas Village, West Kalimantan–Malaysia border area. An analytical cross-sectional study was conducted from January to March 2026 among 64 respondents selected through total sampling. Data were collected using a validated questionnaire and analyzed using univariate analysis and the Chi-square test. Most respondents were women (53.1%), aged 56–65 years (40.6%), educated to junior high school level (53.1%), and farmers (56.3%). Poor knowledge was identified in 44 respondents (68.8%), whereas 20 respondents (31.2%) had good knowledge. Among those with poor knowledge, 43 (97.7%) used medication inappropriately, while 16 of 20 respondents (80.0%) with good knowledge used medication appropriately. A significant association was found between knowledge level and medication use (p < 0.001). Strengthening patient education and pharmaceutical counseling may improve appropriate allopurinol use and support effective long-term gout management in border communities with constrained healthcare information access.
