Abstract

This study was aimed to find out the translation techniques used by the translator in English-to-Indonesian subtitle of The Angry Birds movie. It was also aimed to find out the most dominant type of translation technique used in the subtitle. To understand the phenomenon of the study, this research applied qualitative method by using purposive sampling technique. A set of 233 utterances of the main characters was used as data of the study and analyzed based on the 18 translation techniques proposed by Molina and Albir (2002). The results show that there are 9 of 18 translation techniques used by the translator that included: established equivalent, linguistic compression, discursive creation, modulation, literal translation, compensation, calque, transposition, and borrowing. The established equivalent is the most dominant translation technique used in the subtitle that comprises 44.6% of the total utterances (104 of 233 utterances).

Abstract

The research was aimed to find out the kind of symbol in soundtracks of The Lion King Movie. This research follows a descriptive qualitative approach to identify, describe and analyze the phenomenon of symbolism. The data were about symbolism taken from seven songs of soundtracks in The Lion King Movie. The data were analyzed based on Jung’s (1964) theory of symbolism, and semiotics theory to interpret the data. The findings showed that there are found 24 symbols in seven soundtracks of The Lion King Movie, which are divided into two kinds: conventional symbol and contextual symbol. There are 18 conventional symbols found in seven soundtracks and there are only 6 contextual symbols found in five soundtracks of The Lion King Movie.

Abstract

Translation is an activity to interpret a text from one language to another language without changing the content of the translated text. The objectives this research is: (1) to find out the accuracy of Google Translate in translating Procedural Text and Narrative Text and (2) to investigate which of the two text is translated more accurately comparing to the other text. This research uses descriptive qualitative method. There was one text for each text type, that is procedure text entitled “How to Make Special Fried Sandwich” wad divided into 31 sentences, and narrative text entitled “Surabaya” was divided into 20 sentences. The data using the accuracy rating assessment which consist of three categories that is accurate, less accurate, and not accurate. The researcher took three raters in evaluating the output of Google Translate. The result shows that the accuracy of Google translate in translating procedure text is accurate with average value of 79.57%, less accurate is 24.19%, and not accurate is 12.9%. And narrative text is accurate with average value of 86%, less accurate is 12.5%, and not accurate is 1.5%. It can be concluded that Google translate is more accurate in translating narrative text with 86%, whereas the procedure text is 79.57%.

Abstract

The aims of this study are to find out the types of spelling errors made by the ninth-grade students of SMPN 1 Sumbawa by determining students writing and to find out the causes of spelling error made by students. In addition, this study uses the theory from Bestgen and Granger (2011) in their journal entitled “Categorizing Spelling Error to Assess L2 Writing” that discussed about the category of spelling errors. Furthermore, this research applies descriptive qualitative in which the researchers collected the data from students writing tasks and found the spelling error of three words classification which are adjective, noun and verb. The researchers found six types of spelling errors which are addition, omission, substitution, transposition, word segmentation, and multiple error letter. In addition, there are three main causes of spelling error found such as the influence of Indonesian spelling, lack of vocabulary, and spelling difficulties

Abstract

Translating texts from one language to another is often used as a resolution to overcome many challenges nowadays, allowing individuals to understand content that they may not have been able to otherwise. In the case of song lyrics, translation can be particularly useful in helping individuals understand the meaning and emotion behind the words. This study explored the translation strategies employed by ten Translation and Interpretation (TI) students in translating the lyrics of Joji's Glimpse of Us song, and investigated their translation products whether they meet the criteria of good translation. Using a qualitative-descriptive research design, the study analyzed 23 sentences from the source text, finding that the most common strategy used was the use of a more general word (44%), followed by paraphrasing with unrelated words (21%) , by paraphrasing using related word (18%), by addition (9%), and omission (4%). The least common strategy was the use of loan words or loan words with explanations (3%). The study also evaluated the accuracy, naturalness, and clarity of the students' translation products based on Mona Baker's theory and the criteria of good translation proposed by Larson (1984) out of 230 total data collected, the study found 148 acceptable translations (64%) and 82 unacceptable translations (36%). These findings can inform future teaching practices in TI programs and contribute to the field of translation studies.

Abstract

The development of AVT has a close connection with technology and the entertainment industry, one of which is film. Films interest all over the world, so subtitling was needed in subtitling countries. The research was aimed to discover: 1) what subtitling strategies of Gottlieb are used by the translator; (2) what is the most frequently used subtitling strategies of Gottlieb used by the translator. This research used a descriptive qualitative method to identify and describe the subtitling strategies of Gottlieb on Netflix Documentary Films and the most frequently used subtitling strategies. The data was analyzed using Gottlieb subtitling theory (1992). The results of the research showed that seven subtitling strategies are used in all eight-film series of Netflix Documentary Films: transfer, expansion, condensation, imitation, paraphrase, transcription, & deletion. The most frequently used subtitling strategies in this research are transfer strategy with 71.11%, imitation with 5.03%, and expansion with 8.31% of the total data collected.
