Abstract

Introduction : Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the co-infections with high morbidity and mortality in patients with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). The prevalence of Tuberculosis in HIV patients in Indonesia ranges from 19.7% to 61.5%. Aims: This study aimed to identify predictors of incident HIV-TB co-infection in PLWHA. Methods: This observational study used a case-control design. Cases were defined as patients with HIV/AIDS co-infected with TB, while controls were those with HIV/AIDS without TB co-infection. The study population included 180 PLWHA, comprising 60 cases and 120 controls. Exclusion criteria for the case group were patients who had not completed their medical records and those who were previously infected with TB before HIV infection. Results: Bivariate analysis showed that variables significantly related to TB-HIV were clinical stage, CD4 levels, anemia status, and opportunistic infections. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that CD4 levels were the dominant predictor, with an adjusted odds ratio (AOR) of 5.71, 95% confidence interval (CI) 2.84-11.84, p = 0.0001. Meanwhile, clinical stage, anemia status, and opportunistic infections were confounding variables. Conclusion: CD4 levels were found to be a dominant predictor of increased TB-HIV risk. Further efforts should be made to encourage home assistant care initiation and improve medication compliance based on these results.

Abstract

Dengue fever (DBD) remains a major public health concern in Indonesia. Continuous prevention efforts are essential to reduce its incidence, including the implementation of Mosquito Nest Eradication (PSN) 3M Plus strategies. Additionally, the application of larvicide powders such as Abate to mosquito breeding sites has proven effective in controlling mosquito populations. This community service initiative aimed to reduce the presence of dengue vector mosquitoes by applying Abate powder and to evaluate students' knowledge regarding dengue prevention at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Halu Oleo University. The application of Abate powder was successfully conducted, and a significant improvement in student knowledge was observed following educational counseling, as indicated by a Bayes Factor (BF₁₀) of 236.185.

Abstract

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection has detrimental impacts on the lives of different population groups living with HIV, including men who have sex with men (MSM). Using the World Health Organization Quality of Life questionnaire, this study aimed to assess the health-related quality of life of men living with HIV with different sexual orientations and to determine the dominant influential factors. This cross-sectional study involved 206 men living with HIV. They were recruited from the Sriwijaya Plus Foundation and a medical facility that provided antiretroviral therapy. The data were analyzed using Chi-square and binomial logistic regression. The analysis showed that the percentage of MSM patients was greater than that of non-MSM patients, accounting for 68.9% of the total population. The multivariate logistic regression revealed that the most dominant influential factor was depression status (PR = 5.417; 95% CI = 2.473–11.876), with the majority of the depressed patients being 5.417 times more at risk of a lower quality of life compared to others. These findings suggest that depression can lead to a low quality of life among HIV patients.

Abstract

Ascaris lumbricoides is a roundworm which is a class of intestinal nematodes that are commonly found in tropical and subtropical areas where the condition of the area shows a low level of environmental hygiene. The prevalence of worm egg infection is generally transmitted through food, drinks and vegetables such as basil which is consumed raw as vegetables that are not clean in washing. This study aims to identify the eggs of Ascaris Lumbricoides worm in basil vegetables with samples obtained from the market. Experimental research method with qualitative laboratory examination with Flotation method to identify worm eggs. The population of all Basil vegetables are sold from vegetable traders in the market. Sampling is all basil vegetables from the market. Primary data generated from basil samples were observed. From the results of research conducted on basil vegetables showed negative results containing worm eggs, so basil is safe for consumption. Keywords: Ascaris lumbricoides, Basil, Worm eggs

Abstract

Abstract

Melaleuca leucadendron L. (commonly known as Gelam wood) is a plant that thrives in the swampy regions of South Sumatra. The utilization of this plant has historically been limited to its wood, leaving the potential of its leaves and seeds largely unexplored. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the species of Gelam wood and investigate the phytochemical content and antioxidant potential of its leaves and seeds. The methodology involved methanol extraction of the plant material, followed by comprehensive phytochemical screening and an antioxidant activity assay using the DPPH method. The phytochemical analysis confirmed the presence of several key compounds, with the Gelam extracts testing positive for Alkaloids, Flavonoids, Steroids, Saponins, Tannins, and Triterpenoids. Furthermore, the extract from the leaves and seeds demonstrated potent antioxidant activity, evidenced by an IC50 value of 47.56 ppm, which classifies it as a strong antioxidant (<50 ppm). This research highlights the significant therapeutic potential of Melaleuca leucadendron leaves and seeds, suggesting they are valuable sources of natural antioxidants
