Abstract

The classic Chinese novel, Journey to the West, written by Wú Chéng’ēn in the 16th century of the Ming Dynasty, is an influential work in Chinese culture. The main character of the novel, the Monkey King Sun Wukong, has become a highly popular character and been adapted into various cultural products. Sun Wukong’s popularity was adapted into three films directed by Cheang Pou-soi, namely Monkey King 1 (2014), Monkey King 2 (2016), and Monkey King 3 (2018). This article analyzes the reconfiguration of Sun Wukong in the films based on the monomyth schemes by Joseph Campbell, focusing on the construction of Sun Wukong’s heroic journey and his hybridity visualization that is closely related to his transformation from an archetypal hero who represents the principle of the “Three Teachings in One” to a modern superhero who represents social and individual values in the “Twelve Core Values of Chinese Socialism”. Through the archetypal theme of the journey, hybridity visualization, and a set of values associated with Sun Wukong, this article tries to analyze the transformation of his heroism from a classic hero into a modern superhero. The re-contextualization of this transformation to the contemporary China’s situation reflects the spirit of China today and its long journey from traditionalism to modernity.

Abstract

The drama series You Are My Glory (Nǐ shì wǒ de róngyào你是我的荣耀), directed by Wang Zhi (王之), aired in 2021 and consists of 32 episodes. This research focuses on the first 14 episodes, which showcase the popularity of the game Honor of Kings-HoK (Wángzhě róngyào王者荣耀) through the interactions and dialogue between the two main characters, Yu Tu (于途) and Qiao Jingjing (乔晶晶). The integration of the popular online game HoK with the drama, starring top actors and actresses, represents a novel strategy that warrants further study. The analysis is conducted intrinsically by examining the characterizations of the two main characters in You Are My Glory and extrinsically by describing the social realities of urban Chinese society. This research finds that the portrayal of the HoK game's popularity through the interactions and dialogue between the main characters reflects contemporary conditions in China. Key findings include: the online game HoK is immensely popular among young urban Chinese; the game's popularity illustrates the advancement of information technology in China; Depicting the popularity of HoK through character interactions is a strategic element contributing to the success of the drama series You Are My Glory. This strategy of combining the online game HoK with the drama series aligns with the core goals of the Two Centenaries (Liǎng gè yībǎi nián 两个一百年) and the themes in Xi Jinping's speeches. It represents a new approach by China to bolster local cultural development and extend its soft cultural power globally.

Abstract

Film New Gods: Ne Zha Reborn (Xīnshén bǎng: Nǎ zhā chóngshēng新神榜:哪吒重生) adalah film animasi fantasi yang dirilis pada 12 Februari 2021, disutradarai Zhao Ji (赵霁). Film ini menceritakan tokoh Li Yunxiang yang merupakan sosok kelahiran kembali Ne Zha di masa modern dalam melawan musuhnya yaitu Klan Naga Laut Timur. Ne Zha adalah salah satu dewa dalam mitologi Cina yang ceritanya terdapat dalam novel zaman Dinasti Ming (1368-1644) berjudul Investiture of The Gods (Fēng shén yǎnyì封神演義).

Abstract

The Hallyu phenomenon has increased global interest in Korean cuisine, including kimbap. However, the history of kimbap raises debates over its origins, whether it is a Joseon tradition (Bokssam) or an adaptation of Japanese sushi during the colonial period. This article analyzes how kimbap became a symbol of resistance to the repositioning of postcolonial Korean cultural identity. Using a qualitative method with a literature review, this study shows that South Korea's attempt to separate kimbap from sushi is a cultural strategy to assert autonomy and uniqueness. Kimbap functions as a "symbolic resistance" to Japanese culinary heritage, with Korea creating a narrative of authenticity. This analysis is supported by Stuart Hall's theory of identity that views identity as a fluid entity shaped by historical and cultural relations, as well as Homi Bhabha's concepts of hybridity and "Third Space" that explain the negotiation of new identities amid colonial influence. Kimbap becomes a dynamic manifestation
