Abstract

Time is a complicated object of study because understanding time is closely related to periodization, history, and memory. Film is a medium for presenting manifestations of motion and time in visual products that can be captured by human senses. Tenet (2020) is a film that displays temporal dimensions in terms of both creative ideas and packaging through its cinematography and narrative structure. Tenet presents the idea of overlapping time consciousness of the past, present, and future. A revolving door machine in the film is used to signify the paradox of determinism or the condition of characters suffocated in a time loop. The form of aporia or deterministic indecision experienced by those characters reflects the dialogue of human consciousness on the temporal dimension. Tenet presents a debate on two human perspectives on or attitudes towards time, namely the modern and the postmodern, which are represented by the protagonist and Sator. From a more ideological standpoint, the film is full of ambivalences when presenting the dialogues and human attitudes towards time. This is in line with the perspective of metamodernism, namely a continuous pursue of the impossible. All of the actions taken by the protagonist and Sator will eventually prove to be impossible because they are trapped in an endless time loop

Abstract

The classic Chinese novel, Journey to the West, written by Wú Chéng’ēn in the 16th century of the Ming Dynasty, is an influential work in Chinese culture. The main character of the novel, the Monkey King Sun Wukong, has become a highly popular character and been adapted into various cultural products. Sun Wukong’s popularity was adapted into three films directed by Cheang Pou-soi, namely Monkey King 1 (2014), Monkey King 2 (2016), and Monkey King 3 (2018). This article analyzes the reconfiguration of Sun Wukong in the films based on the monomyth schemes by Joseph Campbell, focusing on the construction of Sun Wukong’s heroic journey and his hybridity visualization that is closely related to his transformation from an archetypal hero who represents the principle of the “Three Teachings in One” to a modern superhero who represents social and individual values in the “Twelve Core Values of Chinese Socialism”. Through the archetypal theme of the journey, hybridity visualization, and a set of values associated with Sun Wukong, this article tries to analyze the transformation of his heroism from a classic hero into a modern superhero. The re-contextualization of this transformation to the contemporary China’s situation reflects the spirit of China today and its long journey from traditionalism to modernity.

Abstract

This paper examines the construction of a dominant discourse criticized by parody in film. The construction of Javanese cultural discourse has been the dominant discourse since the beginning of the Indonesian state; even the meanings born from the construction of the discourse remain to this day. Javanese cultural discourse refers to all forms of discussion related to cultural aspects in Java, including values, norms, traditions, art, language, and local wisdom of the Javanese people. Nagabonar's film deconstructs Javanese discourse with historical parody in its story. This research is expected to open up another way of thinking from the dominance of Javacentric thinking. Two approaches are used to recite and criticize Nagabonar's film as text: cinematographic theory and deconstruction. First is the mise-en-scene approach and staging in cinematographic theory, while the second is the theory of deconstruction to see what history hides or forbids and recasts a discourse construction of thinking that was previously marginalized or even alienated. This study aims to show the meaning of criticism in Nagabonar films against Javacentric dominant discourse through the deconstruction of film texts. Critics of this film tend to open questions about the concept of Indonesian nationalism

Abstract

Food and culinary has become a subject that has recently been discussed in the study of literature and popular culture. Food and culinary is not just about the fulfillment of primary needs of human, satisfy hunger and thirst, but also deals with social practices, lifestyle, identity, and even ideology. This paper will discuss food and culinary in relation to women's resistance in Eka Kurniawan’s short story entitled Kutukan Dapur (Curse of the Kitchen).  This short story tells the character Maharani who learned a lot about food, culinary, and power relations after visiting a museum. The method used is a structural study of narratology that is deepened with Pierre Bourdieu's concepts of field, power struggle, and capital. the reading of the structure of the text shows that there are two parallel narratives representing the present time and the past. The present time tells the story of Maharani who is trapped in the marriage life that is holding her back, while the past  presents the story of Diah Ayu who is intelligent and admired for her cooking skills and rebellion. The results of the analysis show that through focalisation of Maharani, the kitchen as a domestic space that is identical to the limitations of the women’s world, can turn into a field for women's resistance to reach power.

Abstract
