Abstract

This article aimed to map the themes of Public Service Media (PSM) studies, definitions, competition of interests, positions, and policy directives. Changes in the digital media sector have changed the characteristic of Public Service Broadcasting (PSB) into those of PSM. This change in character has led to a polemic on the relevance of PSB’s role and debates over media policies and regulations in a number of countries. Through a systematic study of literature, this research examined 62 journal articles related to media public service policies from 2003 to 2011. The search and selection of articles adapted the stages of the systematic literature study introduced by Lestón-Huerta, Goyanes, & Mazza (2021) who applied the “Prisma guideline” with various adjustments made in accordance to the study objectives. The results showed that most of the PSM policy studies still raised cases of PSM in Western countries, especially Europe. Most of the articles raised the setting of public broadcasting, media convergence, the internet, the economic crisis and political transition in discussing PSM policies. Most studies used a qualitative study approach. The findings identify a number of main themes in the PSM policy review, variations in the definition of PSM, three models of PSM’s position, and PSM policy directives which include the redefining of roles, funding, and management of PSM. This article was closed by conclusions and recommendations.

Abstract

The practical and interactive nature of social media has played a pivotal role in fostering unity among women. Social media has evolved into platforms for women to express their worries, share their fears, discuss their problems, and be more emphatetic towards each other. In this virtual realm, a distinct form of solidarity has emerged, allowing women to amplify their voices beyond the confines of the non-virtual world. An exemplary illustration of this phenomenon is the Instagram account @perempuanberkisah, which actively advocates for women’s issues, particularly focusing on cases of violence. @perempuanberkisah curates diverse content, frequently featuring themes related to violence, including posts tagged #kisah18+ and #triggerwarning. Notably, the content goes beyond mere storytelling; it includes ongoing support for the individuals sharing their experiences, both from the @perempuanberkisah team and the broader community of women, as evidenced by the supportive comments flooding the posts. This study aims to delve into the virtual solidarity that has taken root among women within the @perempuanberkisah community, particularly within the context of contents labelled #kisah18+ and #triggerwarning. This research uses the virtual etnography method with descriptive-critical analysis. The result shows that virtual solidarity emerges from the empathy shown by @perempuanberkisah and women on Instagram through almost the entirety of their content. The sense of belonging and shared experience have generated solidarity among women despite the lack of interactions beyond the virtual space.

Abstract

This research aims to examine the impact of automation on future work in Indonesia's agriculture sector. Internet and digital platforms have altered many aspects of life and resulted in automation in several fields, including agriculture. The emergence of new technologies is often perceived as a threat and a challenge for this sector and its workers. Using a desk study method, however, the result shows that the automation of agriculture is beneficial to Indonesia’s economy. This is not only in terms of gross domestic product (GDP) but also in terms of enhancing the quality of smallholder employment and the interest of youth in working in this sector. Farmers' use of the internet and smartphones have become catalysts in adopting automation in the present and emerging. Digital technology has become an important intermediate factor that helps farmers improve their productivity. This has become the mainstream of the adoption of the technology in agriculture rather than mechanization. Job replacement due to automation will possibly not happen in Indonesia due to labour market conditions, disparity of land ownership, and the high cost of implementing automation. Furthermore, this research addresses aspects that deserve attention, including job quality, social protection, industrial relations, inequality, gender, and participation.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate how education and collective action on Instagram have contributed to helping the public understand the urgency of eliminating online gender-based violence (OGBV) in Indonesia. Instagram accounts that have been examined include @taskforce_kbgo, @srikandikbgo, and @stop.kbgo. Those accounts were chosen because they primarily address OGBV, as the number of cases in Indonesia has kept increasing throughout the years. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach encompassing online observation, interview, and documentation. Online observation is conducted to discover those accounts' communication patterns and activities. In addition, the researcher interviewed one of the actors behind to discover their motivations, their goals, and the processes in managing their advocacy. The findings show that those accounts focus on educating the public about OGBV and its rising cases in Indonesia. By promoting this issue, they can raise awareness of OGBV and minimize the risks of using digital platforms. Furthermore, they have created content that can captivate young people since they are active and prominent users of digital platforms. Digital platforms, including social media, have made collective action possible beyond time and space. These works have allowed the public to be well-informed and well-equipped with skills and knowledge on OGBV.

Abstract

Political years in Indonesia have always presented new and unexpected occurrences, including campaign strategies and activities of candidate supporters. Social media has played a significant role in shaping these patterns due to its ability to mobilize the community. One of the campaigns in the 2024 presidential election was the @aniesbubble account on X, a supporter of presidential candidate 01 Anies Baswedan. When it first appeared, this account drew widespread attention for its similarities to a Korean Pop (K-Pop) fan account. Anies was portrayed as an idol, while @aniesbubble is a fan account dedicated to sharing updates and information about him. Other accounts affiliated with @aniesbubble: @olpproject, and @haveniesday further amplified this strategy. This study aims to examine the 'K-popfication' (K-pop-inspired communication) of the content produced by the three accounts on X. This study employs a qualitative content analysis method to see the elements of 'K- popfication' in tweets or messages published within December 2023 and February 2024. The results reveal significant elements of ‘K-popfication’,, signaling a new era in Indonesian politics, defined by the pervasive use of social media and a more proactive and participatory audience dynamic. In addition, this research shows that the communication aspect was reflected in the creative use of social media and political support for Anies Baswedan and Muhaimin Iskandar was reflected in various online and offline activities. Lastly, thses accounts played crucial roles in spreading information about the candidates as they gained early access to information by attending and participating in Anies and Muhaimin’s events.

Abstract

This study delves into the intricate narratives surrounding the hijab in Indonesia, exploring the multifaceted perspectives presented by Deutsche Welle (DW) Indonesia, a transnational media entity. In the context of Indonesia, a nation characterized by religious diversity, the hijab has become a focal point of discussions, particularly concerning its compulsory nature and its implications for women's freedom and religious identity.  The study critically analyzes DW's portrayal of hijab-wearing Indonesian Muslim women, highlighting the interplay between media representations, cultural identities, and societal perceptions. Employing Sara Mills' critical discourse analysis, the research examines the subject-object positions within DW's coverage, unraveling the complexities of hijab discourse. Through the examination of DW Indonesia's coverage, the study reveals diverse perspectives, emphasizing the non-compulsory nature of hijab, the potential limitations it imposes on women, and the societal pressures associated with wearing it. However, the research underscores the need for a cautious interpretation of these narratives, recognizing the inherent complexities of individual choices, sociocultural backgrounds, and religious beliefs. The study also addresses the influence of global perceptions and Western biases, urging a critical approach to media representations. The research not only contributes to the scholarly discourse on media representations but also critically examines the intersection between religion, freedom, and media influence in contemporary Indonesian society.

Abstract

The rapid development of digital technology presents new challenges, particularly in addressing online gender-based violence (OGBV), which also impact young people in suburban areas of Indonesia. This study aims to explore the perspectives and understanding of suburban youth regarding OGBV and its prevention, based on the assumption that there are significant gaps in information and intervention efforts aimed at eliminating such violence. This research adopts a constructive paradigm and employs a phenomenological research method focusing on young people aged 18-35 both women and men, in Tanjungharjo Village, Kulonprogo, and Gari Village, Gunung Kidul, in the Special Region of Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The main objectives are to examine suburban youth’s perspectives on OGBV cases in Indonesia and to gain deeper insights into their understanding of OGBV preventions and handlings. The findings show that young people’s perspectives on OGBV are highly diverse, shaped by factors including social norms, patriarchal culture, lack of education and intervention related to gender equality and OGBV. Furthermore, their awareness and knowledge of procedures for preventing OGBV are relatively low. This research serves as a foundation for formulating intervention and prevention programs for OGBV in Indonesia. Such programs should move beyond urban-centric approaches and instead be tailored to the specific conditions and needs of suburban youth.
