Abstract

Background: The use of mouthwash to maintain oral hygiene has been carried out for many years. However, long-term use of mouthwash can cause side effects such as tooth discoloration, burning sensation and the death of normal oral flora. The use of herbal plant, such as Moringa oleifera lam has been studied as an alternative medicine because of its pharmacological properties and it is hoped to have minimum side effect. In this systematic literature review, we included the studies that have been investigate the antimicrobial capacity of Moringa oleifera lam as a basic knowledge to develop a preparation for oral hygiene maintenance.Method: A comprehensive literature search was performed utilizing four different electronic databases: PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane library, and EBSCO. Articles included in this study were published from 2013 to September 2023, with broad search criteria comprising MeSH-terms and free-text keywords Moringa Oleifera, Oral Antimicrobial, and Mouthwash.Result: At the beginning our search resulted in 17 articles, with 14 articles remaining after removal of duplication. We exclude five studies that do not meet the PICO criteria, resulting seven articles which included to this study. Conclusion: According to the literature review that has been carried out, Moringa oleifera lam has antimicrobial capacity which allows it to be used as a material in medicinal preparations. Further research, both in vitro and clinical research, will determine the effectiveness of Moringa oleifera lam in suppressing microorganisms.

Abstract

The denture-related oral mucosal lesion is a heterogeneous clinical and histopathological tissue alteration commonly found among older people. Dental management requires understanding dental and medical aspects and paying attention to many other factors. A 62-year-old male came to Universitas Indonesia Dental Hospital complaining of painful soreness and redness at the corner of his mouth. The patient had hypertension and had not routinely taken Amlodipine in the last three years. A blood count examination revealed normal results, except for a slightly low MCV. Diagnosis of angular cheilitis was established along with denture stomatitis and median rhomboid glossitis. Angular cheilitis was healed after administration of 0.2% Miconazole cream. Unfortunately, the patient could not use the drug correctly, so denture stomatitis and median rhomboid glossitis have not entirely resolved yet. The predisposing factors of denture-related oral mucosal lesions might be local or systemic. Proper pharmacological treatment and appropriate dental health education will make a good prognosis. However, the patient's compliance and cooperation will determine the success of dental treatment. It is essential to enhance patient compliance and overcome the treatment challenges to achieve optimal results in managing denture-related oral mucosal lesions of elderly patients. Abstract

Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is a chronic pain disease marked by a prolonged burning sensation in clinically healthy oral mucosa, commonly occurs in fifth to seventh decade women with hormonal changes or psychological problems. Establishing a diagnosis that excludes any apparent organic cause for BMS complaints can be challenging. This case study aimed to determine how the diagnosis and biopsychosocial approach were made in the management of BMS patients. A 53-year-old female patient presented to the Oral Medicine Clinic, Dental Hospital, Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Indonesia, with a two-month history of burning sensation throughout the oral mucosa and radiating pain affecting the tongue and gums. Last menstrual cycle was three years ago. She admitted to feeling stress and anxiety over her mouth condition and family problems. Extraoral examination revealed dry lips, and intraoral examination showed normal oral mucosa and multiple missing teeth. The Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-21) showed moderate anxiety and stress levels. The patient was diagnosed with burning mouth syndrome. Reassurance was given on the first visit to help reduce anxiety caused by chronic pain, along with the use of prescribed combination of neurotropic vitamins containing analgesic and stress management. After six weeks, the pain and burning sensation subsided. In order to effectively manage BMS in patients with psychological conditions, a thorough evaluation and comprehensive therapy are important. A successful combination of psychological and medical strategies will be greatly beneficial in the treatment of BMS patients.
