Abstract

This study aims to explore the collaborative role of opinion leaders, including religious leaders, traditional leaders, academics, government, and popular media, in maintaining diversity while preventing potential religious and culturally based social conflicts in Parepare and Tana Toraja. Through a communication ethnography approach and utilising in-depth interviews, participatory observation as well as thematic and narrative data analysis, this study reveals that local values such as Sipakatau, Sipakainge, Sipakalebbi, Rambu Solo’, Rambu Tuka', and Tongkonan are not only the foundation of harmony, but also produced and distributed through dialogue forums, educational policies, and digital campaigns in a synergistic and non-hierarchical manner. The main outcome of the research is the formulation of the Conflict Prevention through Cultural Synergy Model (CPCSM), which illustrates how religious moderation is built collectively through interactions between opinion leaders. This model underlines the importance of proactive and preventive strategies based on local wisdom and the utilisation of digital media to strengthen social resilience amid diversity. This finding is significant not only as a conceptual contribution to the study of religious communication but also as a practical reference for strengthening public policy and replicating diversity models in other multicultural areas.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the relationship between the cultural value of siri’, digital Islamic communication practices, and the transformation of religious authority in the activities of Facebook Professional Mode (FB Pro) content creators in Majene Regency. The novelty of this research lies in the integrative analysis that connects the local siri’ culture with digital Islamic communication and the transformation of religious authority in the context of creator economy on social media, which is still rarely studied in the Mandar community. The research employs a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. Data were obtained thru observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation of FB Pro content creators and Mandar cultural figures, and then analyzed thru data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The research results show that: (1) FB Pro has transformed the communication patterns of the Mandar community into spaces for social interaction, digital preaching, identity formation, and economic activities; (2) the value of siri’ remains the foundation of ethical digital Islamic communication thru practices of maintaining politeness, self-respect, and moral responsibility in content production; and (3) religious authority has undergone a transformation from a model centered on scholars to a more distributed authority, where content creators gain legitimacy thru interaction, popularity, and audience trust on social media. The main findings of this research indicate that digital Islamic communication in Majene Regency occurs thru a negotiation process between local cultural values, digital economic interests, and changes in religious authority, resulting in a hybrid model of religious authority that combines traditional authority and digital legitimacy within contemporary Muslim society.
