Abstract

Background: Vitamin D is widely recognized for its role in bone and musculoskeletal health, yet accumulating evidence suggests it may also influence body composition through regulatory effects on adipose and skeletal muscle tissues. This study aimed to evaluate the association between serum vitamin D status and body composition parameters in adults. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 77 adults. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentrations were measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), while body composition (percent body fat and skeletal muscle mass) was assessed using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). Participants were categorized based on vitamin D status, and group comparisons as well as Pearson correlation analyses were performed. Results: The mean age of participants was 35.8 ± 9.6 years, and 40.2% were men. The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency (<20 ng/mL) was 36%, while 68% of participants had suboptimal vitamin D levels (deficiency or insufficiency). Individuals with vitamin D deficiency showed significantly higher body fat percentage and lower skeletal muscle mass compared with the non-deficient group (p < 0.05). Serum 25(OH)D was moderately inversely correlated with body fat percentage (r = −0.41, p = 0.018) and positively correlated with skeletal muscle mass (r = 0.29, p = 0.012). Conclusion: Lower vitamin D status was associated with increased adiposity and reduced skeletal muscle mass in adults. These findings highlight the potential importance of maintaining adequate vitamin D levels as part of strategies supporting healthier body composition. Longitudinal and interventional studies are needed to clarify causality and clinical implications.

Abstract

Forensic facial reconstruction is an attempt to recreate the face of a deceased person from their skull remains. Forensic facial reconstruction is an alternative identification method that is widely used in the field of forensics to identify the unidentified remains. It also popular in the field of archeology to bring back the appearance of people in the past. Unfortunately, in Indonesia forensic facial reconstruction is not yet popular. In fact, forensic facial reconstruction can be quite cheap and accurate methods, as well as can be applied when other methods are not possible. There are several techniques using antemortem photos to three-dimensional techniques including manual and computerized. The two-dimensional technique using antemortem photo usually used for very fragile skull that is impossible to reconstruct manually in three-dimensional. The manual three-dimensional techniques make it possible to see the realistic face but time consuming to make. However, technological developments have been able to create computerized three-dimensional techniques that are faster and cheaper. This review will discuss forensic facial reconstruction in general and the role of the skull and soft tissue  in the final results. By involving knowledge in the field of facial bone and soft tissue anatomy, then equipped with anthropometric data corresponding to the skull, the final results will vary personally depend on the shape of the skull bones. Meanwhile, a touch of art will complete the appearance to make it more  real. Ultimately, the results of forensic facial reconstruction are a synergy between science and art.

Abstract

Currently, the use of dermal fillers on the face is increasing, as evidenced by the rising life expectancy, leading many people to seek solutions for early aging. This procedure aims to minimize facial wrinkles and enhance skin volume through the injection of substances such as hyaluronic acid or autologous fat. Although this procedure is generally considered safe with a low risk of complications, there are possibilities of serious complications, such as blindness, stroke, or even death, caused by arterial occlusion. Vision loss due to facial filler injections is a rare occurrence, first reported more than 50 years ago. This case is typically related to occlusion of small blood vessels in the facial area, such as branches of the ophthalmic artery that anastomose with other arteries. The main mechanism of vision loss is retrograde embolism that blocks blood flow to the retina, causing ischemia and blindness. Some facial areas at high risk for these complications include the glabella, nasolabial area, and frontal region. Other factors that may exacerbate this condition include high injection pressure, which can affect arterial blood flow and increase the likelihood of occlusion. Understanding the pathomechanism is important to reduce the risk of complications in facial filler procedures and to provide education to both patients and medical professionals to perform this procedure safely
