Abstract

Abstract

Visual illustrations represent text or ideas with real and authentic contexts, which can improve students' reading comprehension and attract their interest in learning. The purpose of this study is to analyze significant differences in students' reading comprehension skills before and after being taught using visual illustrations. This study used quantitative method and quasi-experimental design of one group pre-test and post-test. The sample technique used was convenience sampling. Data collection techniques were pre-test and post-test with 10 multiple choice questions. Data analysis techniques using descriptive statistics and inferential statistics. The results showed that the average pre-test score was 58.1 in the low category and the average post-test was 82.6 in the very good category. Based on the results of the t-test analysis obtained tcount (1.96) > ttable (1683). So, Ha is accepted and H0 is rejected. The n-gain score of 0.58 (58%) shows the effectiveness of visual illustration in improving students' reading comprehension. Thus, there is a significant difference in student learning outcomes through the use of visual illustration in increasing students’ reading comprehension skills in tenth grade at SMK NU Pace in the academic year of 2023/2024.

Abstract

This study examines the application of Project-Based Learning (PjBL) to improve the descriptive writing ability of eighth-grade students at MTs Al-Huda Gondang, addressing identified difficulties in this skill. The research aimed to determine the significant difference in students' descriptive writing skills before and after being taught using the PjBL model. This study employed a pre-experimental design with a quantitative approach, using a one-group pretest-posttest design. The population was all eighth-grade students, with a sample of 20 students from class VIII-A selected through convenience sampling. Data analysis used a paired sample t-test. Results showed the average pretest score was 36 (Poor category) and the posttest score was 78 (Good category). The t-count (19.09) was greater than the t-table (1.725) at a 5% significance level with 19 degrees of freedom. Therefore, Hₐ was accepted, indicating a significant improvement in descriptive writing ability after implementing PjBL. It is concluded that the PjBL model effectively enhances the descriptive writing skills of eighth-grade students at MTs Al-Huda Gondang.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of the SQ4R (Survey, Question, Read, Reflect, Recite, and Review) method in enhancing students’ reading comprehension of descriptive texts among Grade X TKJ students at SMK PGRI 1 Nganjuk in the academic year 2024/2025. The research employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design using a pretest-posttest control group. The sample consisted of 80 students divided into two groups: experimental and control. The research instrument was an essay-based reading comprehension test comprising 10 questions. Data were analyzed using an independent sample t-test, which revealed a significance value (Sig. 2-tailed) of 0.006 (<0.05), indicating a significant difference between the two groups. These findings confirm that the SQ4R method effectively improves students’ reading comprehension of descriptive texts. It is recommended that English teachers adopt this method to foster active engagement and better comprehension in reading lessons.
