Abstract

The demand for renewable energy sources in Indonesia continues to rise in line with national energy transition efforts. Wind energy represents a significant but underutilized potential, yet its development is hampered by high investment costs, particularly in manufacturing wind turbine blades that rely on expensive composite materials. This research aims to identify more economical and sustainable material alternatives without compromising the necessary mechanical strength. Hybrid composites were developed by combining fiberglass and palm kernel shell (PKS) powder as reinforcement within an epoxy matrix. Variations of PKS addition were set at 12 wt.%, 20 wt.%, and 24 wt.%. Flexural test results indicated that PKS addition significantly influenced flexural strength, with the highest value (169.67 MPa) observed in specimen A3 (12 wt.% PKS) and the lowest (58.74 MPa) in specimen A1 (24 wt.% PKS). Shore D hardness testing revealed a complex trend: specimen A4 (30% fiberglass) exhibited the highest hardness, whereas specimen A2 showed the lowest. These findings underscore the importance of balancing fiberglass and PKS proportions to achieve optimal and sustainable mechanical performance.

Abstract

Bulletproof vests as self-protection for military personnel are generally made from synthetic fiber-reinforced composites. Kevlar and carbon fiber reinforced composites have been able to withstand bullet penetration rates and have lightweight characteristics, but production costs with synthetic fibers are relatively expensive. The use of substitute materials from natural fiber is very potential, due to the abundance of natural fiber, lightweight, and relatively cheap price. One of the potential natural fibers is fiber from the salacca midrib. This study focused on the effect of adding salacca frond fiber on the composite characteristics of Kevlar fiber and carbon fiber, with SiC and Al2O3 fillers. The manufacture of this composite is carried out by the Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Molding (VARTM) method. There are 4 variations of fiber volume fractions and fillers as reinforcement added to this composite. From the results of observations with SEM, the results of the matrix and reinforcement are well bound. The ballistic test results show that all variations of test samples can withstand the bullet rate so that it does not penetrate. The results of mechanical tests show that currently the addition of salacca frond fiber has not significantly improved the mechanical properties of the composite

Abstract

Permasalahan sampah menjadi salah satu isu lingkungan yang semakin kompleks di Kabupaten Bogor, khususnya di Kelurahan Pondok Rajeg, Kecamatan Cibinong. Sebagian besar sampah rumah tangga yang dihasilkan masyarakat berupa sampah organik yang belum dikelola secara optimal sehingga berpotensi menimbulkan pencemaran lingkungan. Oleh karena itu, diperlukan upaya pemberdayaan masyarakat melalui peningkatan pengetahuan dan keterampilan dalam pengelolaan serta pengolahan sampah rumah tangga. Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kesadaran dan kemampuan masyarakat dalam melakukan pemilahan serta pengolahan sampah organik melalui pelatihan pengelolaan sampah dan pemanfaatan mesin pencacah kompos. Mitra kegiatan adalah masyarakat Kelurahan Pondok Rajeg, Kecamatan Cibinong, Kabupaten Bogor. Kegiatan dilaksanakan pada tanggal 30 Juli 2025 dengan metode pelatihan menggunakan pendekatan deduktif dan partisipatif. Tahapan kegiatan meliputi rekrutmen peserta, identifikasi kebutuhan melalui Forum Group Discussion (FGD), penyediaan sarana berupa tempat sampah tiga kategori (organik, anorganik, dan B3) serta mesin pencacah kompos, pelaksanaan penyuluhan dan praktik pengolahan sampah organik, serta evaluasi kegiatan melalui kuesioner pra dan pascapelatihan. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan adanya peningkatan pemahaman masyarakat mengenai pemilahan sampah, pengelolaan sampah berbahaya dan beracun (B3), serta pemanfaatan sampah organik menjadi produk bernilai guna seperti kompos dan pupuk. Peserta juga mampu mengoperasikan mesin pencacah kompos untuk mempercepat proses pengolahan sampah organik. Dengan demikian, kegiatan ini berkontribusi terhadap peningkatan kesadaran lingkungan dan kemandirian masyarakat dalam mengelola sampah rumah tangga sekaligus memperkuat sinergi antara Politeknik Negeri Jakarta dan masyarakat dalam upaya pengurangan volume sampah di tingkat lokal.
