Abstract

Acne is one of the most common skin conditions affecting adolescents. It is a dermatological disorder caused by excessive sebum accumulation that blocks skin pores, leading to bacterial growth and inflammation. One of the most common approaches to managing acne is self-medication, defined as the selection and use of medicines without a physician’s prescription to treat self-recognized health conditions. This study aimed to determine the correlation between the level of knowledge and attitudes toward self-medication for acne among students of State Senior High School 1 of Sendang Agung. This study employed a quantitative research design using a cross-sectional approach. The samples were selected through a simple random sampling technique, resulting in a total of 82 respondents. Data were collected using a questionnaire that had been tested for validity and reliability. The findings showed that the respondents' level of knowledge was categorized as high (17.1%), moderate (56.1%), and low (26.8%). Meanwhile, attitudes toward acne self-medication were classified as good (9.8%), fair (84.1%), and poor (6.1%). Statistical analysis revealed a significant correlation between the level of knowledge and attitudes toward self-medication for acne among students of State Senior High School 1 of Sendang Agung, with a p-value of 0.023. In conclusion, most students demonstrated a moderate level of knowledge and fair attitudes toward acne self-medication. The findings indicate a statistically significant correlation between the level of knowledge and attitudes toward self-medication for acne among students of State Senior High School 1 of Sendang Agung.

Abstract

Body odour is a common problem experienced by people in tropical climates due to increased sweat production and perspiration on the skin. The continuous use of synthetic deodorants can cause side effects, making it necessary to find safer, natural alternatives. Green betel leaves (Piper betle L.) are known to possess antibacterial activity as they contain alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins and tannins. Alum, meanwhile, acts as an antiperspirant and bacteriostatic agent. This study aims to determine the formulation and evaluate the physical properties of a deodorant cream based on green betel leaf extract with the addition of alum. Green betel leaf extract (Piper betle L.) was obtained via maceration using 96% ethanol as the solvent. The cream formulation was prepared in three variations of green betel leaf extract concentration, namely F1 (2%), F2 (3%) and F3 (4%), with the addition of 2% alum. The physical evaluations carried out included organoleptic testing, homogeneity testing, pH testing, spreadability testing, adhesion testing, viscosity testing, cream type testing, and formulation stability testing. The results of the study showed that F1, F2 and F3 were green in colour, had a characteristic odour, were semi-solid in consistency, homogeneous and were of the oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion type. The deodorant cream preparations in each formulation (F1, F2, F3) had pH, spreadability, adhesion and viscosity values that met the requirements for a good cream preparation, and demonstrated good physical stability test results, characterised by the absence of phase separation of the cream following a centrifugation test at 4000 rpm for 30 minutes. Based on the results of the physical evaluation of the deodorant cream formulation containing green betel leaf extract (Piper betle L.) with the addition of alum (Aluminiu Potassium Sulfat), it was found to meet the physical quality requirements and has the potential to be used as a natural deodorant alternative.

Abstract

Butterfly pea flower (Clitoria ternatea L.) extract contains anthocyanins that have potential for use in cosmetic preparations. Lotion is a topical formulation consisting of an oil phase, a water phase, and an emulsifier. This research objective is to determine the effect of varying concentrations of stearic acid and triethanolamine (TEA) as emulsifiers on the physical stability of butterfly pea flower extract lotion. The variations in stearic acid and TEA concentrations used were F1 (1%:7%), F2 (2%:5%), and F3 (3%:3%). The evaluations included organoleptic properties, homogeneity, pH, viscosity, spreadability, adhesion, a hedonic test, and stability testing using the cycling test method. The results showed that all formulas exhibited a semi-solid form, a light green color, a lavender scent, and homogeneity, with a pH of 7–8, a viscosity of 2400–2900 cP, a spreadability of 5–7 cm, and an adhesion of greater than 4 seconds. Variations in the concentrations of stearic acid and TEA significantly affected the physical characteristics of the lotion: higher concentrations of stearic acid combined with lower concentrations of TEA resulted in increased viscosity and adhesion, while spreadability decreased. Conversely, the formula with lower stearic acid and higher TEA concentrations produced lower viscosity and adhesion but greater spreadability. The concentration variations influenced viscosity, spreadability, and adhesion, but did not affect organoleptic properties, homogeneity, or pH. The variation of stearic acid and TEA at a ratio of 2%:5% demonstrated the best physical stability. Based on the research findings, it can be concluded that variations in the concentrations of stearic acid and triethanolamine affect the physical stability of butterfly pea flower extract lotion, with the stearic acid and TEA formula at a ratio of 2%:5% providing the optimal physical stability.

Abstract

Butterfly pea flower (Clitoria ternatea L.) is known to contain flavonoids and anthocyanins, which have potential antioxidant properties, while honey possesses humectant properties that can help maintain skin moisture. The research objective was to determine the formulation and physical evaluation of a lotion preparation combining butterfly pea flower extract and honey. This study was an experimental study involving the formulation of a lotion containing butterfly pea flower (Clitoria ternatea L.) extract and honey with three concentration variations: 6%:1% (F1), 8%:1.5% (F2), and 10%:2% (F3). The physical quality evaluation of the lotion formulations includes organoleptic, homogeneity, pH, spreadability, adhesiveness, viscosity, and hedonic tests. The results showed that all lotion formulations had a semi-solid consistency, were homogeneous, easy to apply, and possessed a characteristic fragrance. The pH values of all formulations were within the normal skin pH range of 4.0–8.0, indicating that they were safe for topical application. The results of the spreadability, adhesiveness, and viscosity tests demonstrated that all formulations meet the Indonesian National Standard (SNI) requirements for lotion preparations. In the hedonic test, Formula 2, containing 8% butterfly pea flower extract and 1.5% honey, showed the highest level of acceptance among the panelists based on the color, aroma, and texture parameters. Based on the findings of this study, it can be concluded that the combination of butterfly pea flower (Clitoria ternatea L.) extract and honey can be successfully formulated into a lotion that meets the required physical quality standards and has the potential to be used as a skin moisturizer.
