Abstract

Acne is a common skin condition caused by excess oil production. Propionibacterium acnes is one of the bacteria involved in the development of acne. Long-term use of antibiotics to treat acne can cause side effects and bacterial resistance, making alternative treatments derived from natural sources necessary. Robusta coffee beans and green cincau leaves are known to contain secondary metabolites with potential antibacterial properties. This study aims to determine the antibacterial activity of a combination of Robusta coffee bean (Coffea canephora) and green cincau leaf (Cyclea barbata Miers) extracts against the growth of Propionibacterium acnes, as well as to identify significant differences in their antibacterial activity. This study employed a quantitative experimental method. Phytochemical screening was conducted for alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, and saponins, while the antibacterial activity test used the disk diffusion method with three concentration variations of the extract combination: 12.5% : 15%, 25% : 30%, and 50% : 60%. Clindamycin was used as the positive control and sterile distilled water as the negative control. The results of the phytochemical screening showed that both extracts contained alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, and saponins. The combination of Robusta coffee bean extract and green cincau leaf extract exhibited antibacterial activity, with average inhibition zone diameters of 4.49 mm, 6.12 mm, and 6.13 mm, respectively. Statistical analysis revealed significant differences in antibacterial activity with p-values <0.05. The study concluded that the combination of Robusta coffee bean extract and green cincau leaf extract is capable of inhibiting the growth of Propionibacterium acnes, exhibiting weak to moderate antibacterial activity.

Abstract

The study sample comprised 64 respondents selected using total sampling. Data were collected using the Tuberculosis Self-Efficacy Scale (TBSES) and the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS-8). Data analysis was carried out using univariate and bivariate methods, employing Spearman’s rank correlation test with a significance level of α = 0.05. The characteristics of the respondents showed that the majority were male, comprising 35 respondents (54.7 per cent); aged 18–40 years, comprising 32 respondents (50.0 per cent); with a secondary school education, comprising 33 respondents (51.6 per cent); and having undergone treatment for 3–6 months, comprising 46 respondents (71.9 per cent). The results of the study showed that the majority of respondents had high self-efficacy (57 respondents, 89.1%), moderate self-efficacy (6 respondents, 9.4%), and low self-efficacy (1 respondent, 1.6%). Medication adherence was high in 47 respondents (73.4%), moderate in 14 respondents (21.9%), and low in 3 respondents (4.7%). The results of the bivariate analysis using Spearman’s rank test yielded a p-value of 0.000 (<0.05) and a correlation coefficient (r) of 0.661, indicating a positive relationship with a strong correlation between self-efficacy and medication adherence. The higher a patient’s self-efficacy, the higher their adherence to tuberculosis medication.

Abstract

Acne is one of the most common skin conditions affecting adolescents. It is a dermatological disorder caused by excessive sebum accumulation that blocks skin pores, leading to bacterial growth and inflammation. One of the most common approaches to managing acne is self-medication, defined as the selection and use of medicines without a physician’s prescription to treat self-recognized health conditions. This study aimed to determine the correlation between the level of knowledge and attitudes toward self-medication for acne among students of State Senior High School 1 of Sendang Agung. This study employed a quantitative research design using a cross-sectional approach. The samples were selected through a simple random sampling technique, resulting in a total of 82 respondents. Data were collected using a questionnaire that had been tested for validity and reliability. The findings showed that the respondents' level of knowledge was categorized as high (17.1%), moderate (56.1%), and low (26.8%). Meanwhile, attitudes toward acne self-medication were classified as good (9.8%), fair (84.1%), and poor (6.1%). Statistical analysis revealed a significant correlation between the level of knowledge and attitudes toward self-medication for acne among students of State Senior High School 1 of Sendang Agung, with a p-value of 0.023. In conclusion, most students demonstrated a moderate level of knowledge and fair attitudes toward acne self-medication. The findings indicate a statistically significant correlation between the level of knowledge and attitudes toward self-medication for acne among students of State Senior High School 1 of Sendang Agung.
