Abstract

The limited practical laboratory facilities at Makassar Aviation Polytechnic, especially for the Airport Equipment course, force students to make direct visits to the airport to study equipment such as escalators. This condition not only hampers the effectiveness of learning but also adds to the cost and time burden. This research aims to design and test an Internet of Things (IoT)-based escalator control system integrated with WhatsApp application as an interactive learning media. The system is controlled through WhatsApp message commands using ESP32, which is connected to the SSR module, LCD, buzzer, and AC motor. The tool development was carried out using the Research and Development (R&D) method and tested using a black box testing approach. The test results show that all system components work optimally, and a survey involving 29 respondents showed an average effectiveness rate of 97.8%. The system proved to be easy to understand, responsive, and suitable for learning needs. Thus, this tool not only accelerates students' understanding of IoT-based automatic control systems, but also becomes an efficient solution to overcome the limitations of practicum facilities in the campus environment. This system also opens up the potential of utilizing popular communication platforms as a means of controlling engineering devices in the world of vocational education.

Abstract

The digital transformation of technical education in developing countries is hampered by infrastructure limitations, access gaps, and the low effectiveness of e-learning, especially in virtual laboratories.This study aims to analyze and map global research trends on e-learning implementation in engineering education using bibliometric methods to provide comprehensive insights into its development and policy implications. A total of 288 articles published between 2013 and 2023 were collected from the Scopus database and analyzed through a quantitative bibliometric approach. The data were processed using VOSviewer software to visualize publication trends, keyword co-occurrence networks, and thematic research clusters. The results reveal a significant increase in publications and citations over the past decade, notably accelerated during the COVID-19 pandemic. The co-occurrence analysis identified four dominant research themes: learning effectiveness, educational digitalization, adaptive technologies, and digital transformation in engineering education. Notably, the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Virtual/Augmented Reality (VR/AR) technologies has enhanced student engagement, virtual practicums, and teaching effectiveness. However, substantial geographical disparities and infrastructure gaps remain major barriers in many regions. These findings emphasize the need for comprehensive education policies that include strengthening digital infrastructure, improving teaching quality, learning management, and equal access. Recommendations include international collaboration and adaptive strategies to realize effective and sustainable technical e-learning.

Abstract

This research focused on digitalizing a web-based Operational Logbook system for the Aerodrome Control Tower used by Air Traffic Controllers (ATC) at the Biak Sub-branch. The current manual Operational Logbook system, which relies on physical books and handwriting, is inefficient due to the need for substantial storage space and the susceptibility to damage. This research aimed to address these issues by providing a web-based application that facilitates easier, faster, and more efficient data entry and retrieval. This research method employed Rapid Application Development (RAD), effectively developing systems quickly and under urgent needs. The RAD process includes three stages: planning, system design, and implementation. The planning phase involved identifying user needs and application objectives. The system design phase encompasses the overall system architecture, while the implementation phase involves developing and testing the application. Results indicated that the web-based Operational Logbook application significantly simplifies the recording and reporting processes for ATC personnel, reduces errors in data entry, and enhances data accessibility. The digital logbook supports high mobility, eliminating the need for physical books and associated storage space, and provides a secure and easily accessible archive of records, minimizing the risk of data loss and misuse. In conclusion, the digitalization of the Aerodrome Control Tower Operational Logbook is crucial for ATC officers at the Biak sub-branch. This web-based application improves the efficiency and effectiveness of record-keeping and reporting processes, aligning with the demands of the digital era and reducing operational inefficiencies.

Abstract

The rapid growth of the aviation industry also presents significant challenges regarding environmental impact. In Indonesia, airports are facing pressure to reduce their carbon footprint and improve overall sustainability. This research aims to provide a clear picture of the policies and challenges of implementing sustainable airports in Indonesia. A systematic literature review was carried out using PRISMA guidelines, which aims to analyze knowledge regarding sustainability at airports. This research uses the Google Scholar database, Scopus from Elsevier, the Web of Science database from Clarivate, and the 2023 PT Angkasa Pura I and II sustainability reports. The results of the research show that sustainable airport policies focus on developing environmentally friendly airports by prioritizing environmental management and collaborating with various stakeholders. Environmentally sustainable airports have been implemented, but they are limited to large airports in Indonesia.
