Abstract

The book of Amos is one of the prophetic literatures to be read in every context of human life. While reading Amos 5,18-27 we may ask the question: What is the reason for God to hate Israel’s worship and not accepting their offering? This selected text shows a contrasting movement of relationship between God and Israel. God chooses and makes Israel his own, in order that they would be an instrument of his blessing for others. However, the Israelites failed to practice it in their daily life. In this exegetical paper, I would suggest that neglecting justice for the poor in the society provokes God’s anger to hate Israel’s worship and reject their sacrifice.  Concerning the wickedness of Israel, Amos declared that even though Israel desires for the day of Yahweh, it is darkness and not light for them (v.18) and because of their sins, God will send them into exile beyond Damascus (v. 27). God hates their attitude but still loves them as his chosen people. The purpose of Amos’s announcement is to change the hearts of ruling class’s behavior and his basic concern on socioeconomic injustices. Amos’s oracles suggest that the officials got rich in dishonesty. The exile is the consequence of the failure of Israel leaders in leading the people to live in divine will. It becomes the moment for Israel to purify themselves before God and being trained for strengthen their good relationship with Yahweh, their God.

Abstract

The Merdeka curriculum was introduced to enhance the quality of Indonesian education and bridge the gap with other countries. Student learning achievement, assessed through standardized evaluations, serves as a key measure of this improvement. This study aims to identify the difficulties faced by teachers in adapting their teaching methods, the challenges in developing instructional modules, and the issues encountered in assessing Catholic religious education. This qualitative study employed observations, interviews, and document analysis to collect data from Catholic Religious Education teachers. Data were analyzed using data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. Findings indicate that teachers have implemented the Merdeka curriculum. However, they face significant challenges in transitioning from traditional teaching methods, designing effective teaching modules, and conducting assessments in accordance with the new system. These difficulties highlight the need for additional support and training. The study reveals that inadequate dissemination and technical guidance hinder effective curriculum implementation. Teachers require structured training and resources to successfully integrate the Merdeka curriculum into their teaching practices. While the Merdeka curriculum has been adopted, challenges remain in its execution. To ensure effective implementation, comprehensive training and equitable distribution of curriculum resources are necessary. Further research is recommended to explore long-term solutions for improving teacher adaptation.

Abstract

The story of the miracle of the wine in wedding at Cana is one of the most significant narrative text in the New Testament. Jesus did his first sign at the beginning of his public ministry. This study of the account of the wedding at Cana in Jn 2,1-12 is influenced by two statements “he revealed his glory and his disciple believed in him (v.11). I will approach the text by analyzing the characterization of every character in the narrative: how the character works to contribute to the theological perspective of the Gospel? The literary structure of the periscope is analyzed, and the meaning of the sign is understood as a Messianic miracle that leads the disciples to a firm belief in Jesus as the Messiah. It is argued that the revelation of glory does not create faith directly but it is link with the faith that the secret is only reveled to those who believe. The miracle of the wine is then able to reveal a profound secret concerning the person of Jesus, his union with the Father. The faith of the disciple in this text is not only an initial faith but a total faith in Jesus.

Abstract

Marriage preparation courses have become increasingly important for couples who wish to build a strong foundation for their relationships. These courses provide couples with the tools to understand and navigate their roles and responsibilities in a marriage. For Catholic couples, attending marriage preparation courses is seen as an essential step in preparing for a lifelong commitment, in accordance with the teachings of the Catholic Church. According to John Paul II (1981) in Familiaris Consortio, a document that outlines the duties and responsibilities of families, the preparation for marriage should be holistic, addressing not only the emotional and social aspects but also the spiritual and theological dimensions of family life. This study specifically aims to explore the meaning and impact of marriage preparation courses on the happiness of Catholic families at the St. Paul Beganding station. Using a qualitative approach, the research employed a combination of observation, interviews, and documentation techniques to gather data. The study involved 12 informants, including five married couples who had attended marriage preparation courses, one Porhanger (a community leader), and one parish priest under the St. Peter and Paul Kabanjahe parish. The findings reveal that marriage preparation courses had a significant and positive effect on the happiness of Catholic families, particularly those at the St. Paul Beganding station. The course content provided couples with a deeper understanding of their roles and duties as spouses and parents, allowing them to build stronger, more resilient relationships. Participants expressed that the courses helped them address challenges more effectively and fostered a greater sense of commitment and mutual respect. This, in turn, contributed to the overall happiness of their families. Couples who had attended the course reported stronger emotional and spiritual connections, further emphasizing the importance of comprehensive marriage preparation for long-term marital success.

Abstract

The Liturgy of the Word serves to strengthen faith, shape congregational identity, and transform congregational life. Meanwhile, preaching, as part of the Liturgy of the Word, has a sacramental dimension and functions to renew the Word of God in the context of people's lives. The purpose of this study is to analyze the competence of church administrators in delivering the Liturgy of the Word and sermons, explore contextual challenges in its implementation in the midst of congregations without priests, and formulate strategies for empowering liturgy and homilies based on local culture as a relevant and sustainable pastoral solution. The approach used in this research is participatory action research. Data collection techniques include observation, interviews, and documentation. The results showed that in St. Damian Parish, Lau Baleng, there is a competency gap among church administrators in the understanding and animation of the Liturgy of the Word as well as preaching skills. The quality of service, including the abilities to inculturate the liturgy in Karo culture, requires structured training. A pastoral approach in liturgy is key to creating meaningful experiences for the people, especially in a multicultural context.
