Abstract

This study analyzes the language styles in the movie "Instant Family," a drama directed by Sean Anders and released on Netflix on January 19, 2019. Language style variation is a natural aspect of communication, influenced by social contexts and interlocutors. In "Instant Family," these variations are explored to understand how writers and speakers use language choices, sentence structures, and situational contexts to convey meaning. The research employs a qualitative content analysis approach, involving repeated viewings of the film to identify and categorize language styles based on Martin Joos’ theory: frozen, formal, consultative, informal, and intimate. Each dialogue instance is analyzed in relation to its context and character relationships to illustrate the use of different language styles in character development and emotional expression. The study's descriptive qualitative design reveals five distinct language styles. Analysis identifies thirty instances of these styles within the movie's dialogues, with formal style being the most prevalent, appearing eleven times. This predominance is attributed to the numerous public exchanges led by the protagonist, particularly in scenes involving interactions between the presiding officer and the accused. The study suggests that English Department students further investigate language styles across various sources, including movies, novels, social media, and articles. Analyzing linguistic styles in "Instant Family" is crucial for understanding how language choices shape character development and thematic expression. This research serves as a foundation for future studies in film and communication, exploring the impact of linguistic styles on audiences and narratives

Abstract

This study analyzes the characterization of Grace, the main protagonist in ” Ready or Not” (2019), a movie about Grace, a newlywed who must survive from deadly game of hide-and-seek on her wedding night. This study used a qualitative descriptive method to identify and understand Grace’s character and used the observation method for the data collection. The data was collected from the movie, and accessed through the “Loklok” platform. The characterization of Grace was analyzed from three dimensions: psychological, sociological, and physiological, based on the theory of Wellek and Warren (1962). The study found the characterization of Grace Le Domas's transformation from naive to survival. Physiologically, Grace’s appearance shifts dramatically from a pristine wedding dress to a tattered, bloodied garment, symbolizing her transition through the trauma of her ordeal. Psychologically, her transformation from innocence to a determined survivor emphasizes the movie's exploration of the psychological effects of extreme tension and survival instincts. Sociologically, Grace’s lower socio-economic status compared to the wealthy Le Domas family emphasizes her struggle and effect on her decisions, highlighting the movie's critique of class disparity. Her transformation from innocence to survival, and eventually to violence, illustrates the transformative potential of horror narratives to explore the darker sides of human nature. Grace's characterization is important, it reflects the movie's larger themes, which include the corruption of wealth, the breaching of moral and social norms, and survival. This study contributes to the field of literary analysis by enriching the understanding of character development, especially in horror narratives.

Abstract

This study aimed to describe translation procedures applied in the information Boards of Tegenungan waterfall in Gianyar, Bali, especially on bilingual information boards. The method used in this research was qualitative research to describe the translation procedures found on the information boards. Several theories were applied in this research: Landscape linguistics theory from Yendra and Artawa (2020), syntactic scope theory by Noortyani (2017), translation procedures by Vinay and Dalbernet (2000:84), and translation equivalence theory by Nida (2000). The analysis revealed that the information boards predominantly used literal translation, with some instances of adaptation and equivalence. Literal translation aimed to maintain the form and structure of the source language, ensuring clarity for both domestic and international visitors. However, there was room for improvement in linguistic accuracy and cultural nuances. By considering the principles of landscape linguistics and translation theory, authorities could enhance the quality of translation on the information boards. Improving the translations could lead to a more informative and engaging experience for visitors, contributing to their enjoyment and safety at Tegenungan Waterfall.
