Abstract

Abstract        This paper entitled Indonesian Morphological Interference in Balinese Found in Cupak Teken Grantang is mainly aimed at investigating how the Indonesian morphological interference in Balinese is and the factors lead the interference. A Balinese folktale Cupak Teken Grantang is taken from serial online of Balinese folktale compilation www.satuabaliku.blogspot.com. The folktale is taken as reference in this paper because it represents the Indonesian morphological interference in Balinese.        In this research the data source was collected by reading the folktale and choosing the words that represent the Indonesian morphological interference in Balinese. Then, the data was analyzed by descriptive qualitative and verification qualitative method.There are some theories used in analyzing the data, those are the theory of interference proposed by Menyuk (1971) on her book entitled The Acquisition and Development of Language, the theory of Balinese affix is proposed by Tim Penyusun Buku Tata Bahasa Baku Bahasa Bali (1996), the theory of Indonesian affix is proposed by Tim Penyusun Buku Pelajaran BIPA-FSUI (1995), and the theory for analyzing the factors lead the interference is proposed by Grosjean (1982). At last, it is found that there are three words in Balinese interfered by Indonesian affixes found and analyzed in this research. They are Balinese suffix ma-influenced by Indonesian suffix meN-, Balinese suffix pa-influenced by Indonesian suffix peN-, and Balinese affix ka-…-an influenced by Indonesian affix ke-…-an. The interferences in this research are caused by hypercorrection and influence of the other language. The hypercorrection looked on word-forming error that is might caused by the lack of knowledge of the writers and the morphological interference in Balinese influenced by Indonesian morphological form.   Keywords: interference, morphological, affix

Abstract

ABSTRACT     The differences in two linguistic and cultural systems have made obstacles in translation. Thus, this research is aimed at analysing the translation technique used by the student in translating the narrative text. The data focused on the translation of The Tale of Tom Kitten from English to Indonesian done by ten students of BIPA (Indonesian for non-native speaker) Dharmasiswa at STIBA Saraswati Denpasar. The method of collecting the data in this research was direct observation method. It observed directly through the translation of the fable. There were two techniques used in collecting the data. The first was reading the English version of The Tale of Tom Kitten and the Indonesian translation done by the students. The second technique was choosing the sentences that represent the use of translation techniques in translating the narrative text. After the data collected, they were analysed through descriptive qualitative method. The data analysed were the results of the research. The translation strategies used to translate the narrative text were analysed. The techniques of analyzing the data followed three steps. First, the data represented the translation strategies use in translation was noted. Then, it was analyzed the type of the translations techniques used to translate the sentences from English into Indonesian. The result found that there were four type of techniques used by the students to translate The Tale of Tom Kitten. They are literal technique, establish equivalent technique, reduction technique, and amplification technique.   Key words:  translation techniques, narrative text, Dharmasiswa students

Abstract

This study focuses on Oliver Twist inferiority feeling during his childhood life. Oliver Twist as the main character of the novel experienced several miserable treatments from people around him. Along with the inferiority feeling, unfortunately it brings some effects towards him. This is the reason of why this study created by describing the inferiority feelings together with the impact qualitatively. Since the study is in literature matter, psychological and sociological approaches were applied to elaborate the inferior feeling experienced by the main character. There were five settings where Oliver Twist got bad treatment done by several supporting figures and made him become an innocent, rebel and courageous boy as the effects of those inferiority in this study.

Abstract

This study is entitled “The Types of Idiom and Their Meaning in Michael Jackson “Thriller” Album”. This study is needed because it was found that a lots of non natives English speakers was often didn’t understand about idiom and their uses, oftentimes this leads to the miss communication. The purpose of this study is to give the non native English speaker about idiom knowledgably and their meanings in their practical uses. The method used in this study was qualitative-descriptive method combine with library research method in collecting the data. The result in this study showed that there were found 9 types of idiom in this album, they were 4 types of partial idiom (44, 44%) and 5 types of total idiom (55, 56). For the types of meaning there were found 9 types of meaning, they were 4 connotative meaning (44, 44%) and 5 affected meaning (55, 56%).

Abstract

The aim of this study was to find out types of flouting maxim in Lady Bird movie by using theory conduct by Grice (1975). The data was collected from Lady Bird movie, this movie talked about teenager’s life. The data were collected by using library analysis method and analyzed by descriptive and qualitative method. The finding is presented in formal and informal way. Our findings show that there are four types were performed by the characters in Lady Bird movie. There were flouting maxim of quantity (47,7%), flouting maxim of quality (28,7%), flouting maxim of relevance (19%) and flouting maxim of manner (4,6%).

Abstract

Language is one the foremost necessary ability folks use to interact with others. The fascinating phenomena in illocutionary act is the act are often use not just concerning what the speaker vocalization. The study aims to investigate the kinds of expressive illocutionary act found in the movie The conjuring 2 and also the context situation supports in the movie the conjuring 2. This study the writer used some methods there are descriptive qualitative and quantitative method. And also used some theories, first from Searle (1979) theory of types illocutionary act, Halliday and Hassan (1985) theory context situation. Based on the data, there are 32 utterances found in the movie with 6 types there are (22%) of thanking, (16%) of apologizing, (22%) of attitude, (28%) of greeting, (9%) of wishing, (3%) of congratulating and field, tenor, and mode as the context of situation found in the movie the conjuring 2.

Abstract

This study is entitled “The Types of Idiom and Their Meaning in Michael Jackson “Thriller” Album”. The data in this study is taken from one of Michael Jackson album entitle “Thriller”. This study is analyzed about types of idiom including the types of meaning and their meaning. This study is chosen because the meaning of a idiom in a sentence sometimes cannot be translated directly and need to be further intellectuality to caught its real meaning. There are two theories that used in this study the first one is the theory about the types of idiom form Frank Robert Palmer that is taken from his book entitled “Semantic: a new outline (1976) ” as the main theory for the second theory is taken from Geofery Leech about the types of meaning on his book entitled “Semantic the study of meaning(1974)”. The result of analyze in this study there were found 9 types of idiom in this album, they were 4 types of partial idiom (44, 44%) and 5 types of total idiom (55, 56). for the types of meaning there were found 9 types of meaning, they were 4 connotative meaning (44, 44%) and 5 affected meaning (55, 56%) .

Abstract

Translation could be defined as converting one language (Source Language) to another language (Target Language) so that the target language could convey the intended message in the source language. In translation, a shift is something unavoidable. Catford (1965) said that shift is departures from formal correspondence in the process of going from the SL to the TL. Translation can be done in many kinds of text, including literary. So the shift may also happen in many kinds of literary, in this paper it is focused on novel. Considering the shift happened in various kinds of literary, this study entitled Translation Shifts of Pronoun in Bilingual Novel Twilight attempts (1) classify the types of translation shift of pronoun, (2) examine the translation techniques, and (3) investigate the factors lead the application of particular translating technique done by the translator in the translation of Twilight in English version to Twilight in Indonesian version. The data focus on the translation of pronouns found in the bilingual novel of Twilight. From the data found, there are translation shift in different types which belongs to the theory proposed by Catford (1965). The method of collecting the data in this research is a direct observation method. The bilingual novel of Twilight was read. Then, the pronouns that represent the translation shift were chosen. After the data collected, they were analyzed. The data analyzed was the results of the research. There are two main theories used in analyzing the data, those are the theory of translation shift is proposed by Catford (1965) and the theory of translation technique is proposed by Molina ad Albir (2002) and supporting theory from Nida (2000) about factors lead the application of particular translating technique done by the translator. In the end, it is found that there are two types of shift which are unavoidable in translation found. They are shifts in grammatical categories or transposition and shift of point of view or modulation. There are six out of eight-teen kinds of translation techniques used in this study. Also, the factors leading to the application of the particular technique of translation in this study are linguistic factors, cultural factors, and the translator’s preference.

Abstract

The phenomenon of code switching and code mixing is one of the various social contexts that can help in interaction and communication process, from one language to another, especially Indonesian-English. The study concerns are an attempt to understand the code switching and code mixing in the novel Negeri Para Bedebah by Tere Liye. The study uses the discriptive qualitative research method. It means that it describes clearly the fact of code switching and code mixing  based on the data that gained through reading the whole contain of the novel. The data was taken from episodes 23 until episodes 48 in the novel Negeri Para Bedebah by Tere Liye. The method used in collecting the data is library research method. The researcher reads the novel intensively to find out the data that suitable with the study and observing the utterance produced by the characters in the novel. For analyzing the data researcher applying the theory by Hoffmann (1991) and Muysken (2000). The result concludes code switching intention of clarifying the speech content for interlocutor and code mixing congruent lexicalization is dominantly used by the characters with 46,03% and 48,80%. Meanwhile, code switching quoting someone's word and type code mixing alternation be the lowest with 0,80% and 1,60%.

Abstract

This study was conducted to analyze the functions of negative imperative sentences found in Disney’s Mulan movie 2020. The data that used in this study taken from Disney’s Mulan movie which have been downloaded from Telegram application. This movie tells the story of a young Chinese woman who disguises herself as a male warrior in order to save her father.  The data were collected through observation method by watching the movie repeatedly, taking a note and making the list of negative imperative sentences. The theory used to classify the functions of negative imperative sentence proposed by Quirk et. al (1985). There are three functions of negative imperative sentences were found in this article. First function is prohibition. It is used to forbid someone to do something. Second function is warning. It is used to warn someone to stop doing something. The last function is suggestion. It is used to give a suggestion to someone in doing something or stop doing something. Keywords— negative imperative, function, movie
