Abstract

Traditional literature, known as Satua Bali, aims to teach moral principles to the younger generation. This study aims to examine how the values of dharma and adharma are represented in the Satua I bawang teken i kesuna. The objectives of this research were achieved through the application of a qualitative approach and a literature review method. Primary data was derived from the satua text, while secondary data was sourced from scientific journal articles published within the last five years that discuss moral values, character education, and Balinese local wisdom. Intrinsic narrative elements, such as characters, plot, conflict, and symbolism, were used to analyze the content. The results of the study indicate that the character I bawang is honest, diligent, patient, and sincere, while the character I kesuna is envious, greedy, and lazy. The concepts of karmaphala, Tri hita karana, and the teaching of tat twam asi, which exist within Balinese Hindu culture, were used to construct symbolic representations of these two values. In this satua, the conflict between dharma and adharma serves as a medium for social control and character formation. This remains relevant in contemporary education. As a result of this research, Balinese satua has great potential to become an effective platform for teaching character based on local wisdom to the younger generation.

Abstract

Satua is one of the forms of Balinese oral literature that is rich in local wisdom values and has become an inseparable part of Balinese cultural life since ancient times. One of the most well-known and meaningful satua is the satua of Manik Angkeran, which embodies the philosophy of Tri Hita Karana as the foundation of Balinese society. This study aims to analyze the local wisdom values contained in the satua of Manik Angkeran and their relevance in Balinese language learning at the elementary and secondary school levels. The study employs a qualitative approach using content analysis and library research methods through textual examination of the satua, literature review, and analysis of Balinese language curriculum documents. The results indicate that the satua of Manik Angkeran contains four local wisdom values, namely: (1) religious values reflected in the concepts of karma phala and dharma; (2) moral values in the form of obedience, responsibility, and atonement; (3) socio-cultural values in the form of respect for parents and ancestors; and (4) ecological values in the form of appreciation for nature and living beings. These values are relevant to be integrated in Balinese language learning and have the potential to serve as a foundation for character education based on local wisdom for Balinese students.

Abstract

This study examines the application of the role playing model in learning Balinese traditional stories (satua), specifically the story of 'Siap Selem' (The Black Rooster). The main purpose of this study is to analyze the theoretical foundations of role playing in elementary education, review relevant previous research findings, and assess the suitability of this model for teaching moral values embedded in Balinese satua. This research employs a qualitative literature review approach, systematically collecting data from academic journals, books, and scholarly reports published between 2015 and 2024. Data were analyzed through content analysis and thematic synthesis. The results indicate that role playing effectively stimulates students' critical thinking, empathy, and moral understanding when applied to cultural narratives. 'Siap Selem' contains rich moral themes—loyalty, courage, and justice—that align well with the affective and social learning objectives of the role playing model. Previous studies confirm that the integration of local cultural content into role playing activities significantly improves student engagement and character development. This study concludes that role playing is a highly suitable and contextually meaningful method for teaching Balinese satua at the elementary level, providing both cultural preservation and holistic student development.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the limited use of local wisdom-based learning media in elementary schools, resulting in less engaging learning and suboptimal character development among students. This study aims to develop a digital flipbook based on local wisdom through the Balinese folktale I Cupak and Gerantang, presented in the form of text and images, and to ensure that it meets valid and practical criteria. The method used is research and development based on the ADDIE model, which consists of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation stages. The subjects of this study include material experts, instructional design experts, media experts, and fourth-grade students at SD Negeri 11 Pedungan. Data were collected through interviews, documentation, and questionnaires, and then analyzed using percentage techniques. The results indicate that the developed digital flipbook is categorized as highly valid and highly practical. This media is able to enhance student engagement, facilitate understanding of the story content, and support more interesting and meaningful learning. Therefore, the developed media can be used as an alternative local wisdom-based learning medium in elementary schools.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the role of Balinese cultural literacy through the use of Satua Bali Men Sugih lan Men Tiwas in developing empathy in elementary school students. The study used a literature review method by examining relevant scientific sources, such as journals, books, proceedings, and official documents published in 2022–2026. Data collection was carried out through a systematic literature search using keywords related to cultural literacy, student empathy, character education, and Balinese folklore. Data were analyzed using content analysis techniques to identify the values of empathy and character contained in Balinese folklore and their relationship to learning in elementary schools. The results of the study indicate that strengthening character education is important from an early age to face challenges of technological development and globalization that can influence student behavior. Satua Bali as local cultural heritage has moral, social, and spiritual values that can be utilized as a contextual learning medium to instill empathy, social awareness, responsibility, and appreciation for regional culture. The story of Men Sugih and Men Tiwas teaches students to understand the feelings of others, help each other, and not discriminate based on socioeconomic background. Furthermore, the use of Balinese folklore in learning can improve students' literacy skills, such as reading, listening, speaking, and understanding the meaning of the story. Therefore, the use of Satua Bali in elementary school learning can be an effective tool for developing empathy, strengthening character, and preserving Balinese culture in the younger generation and supporting meaningful learning in schools.

Abstract

This study was conducted based on the low reading interest of elementary school students and the limited variety of literacy learning media used in the learning process. The study aimed to determine the effectiveness of Satua I Belog as a literacy learning medium in improving the reading interest of fifth-grade students at SD Negeri 3 Duda Timur. This research employed a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental method using the One Group Pretest-Posttest Design. The research subjects consisted of 28 students, including 15 male students and 13 female students. Data were collected through questionnaires, observations, and documentation. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential statistics through the paired sample t-test. The results showed that the use of Satua I Belog was effective in increasing students’ reading interest. This was indicated by the increase in the average reading interest score from 62.32 in the pretest to 84.71 in the posttest. The hypothesis testing results revealed that the calculated t-value of 8.521 was higher than the t-table value of 2.052, with a significance value of 0.000 < 0.05. Therefore, H0 was rejected and H1 was accepted. In addition to improving reading interest, the use of Satua I Belog also increased students’ engagement in learning activities, fostered students’ interest in reading, and helped instill moral values and Balinese local culture. Therefore, Satua I Belog can be used as an effective literacy learning medium to support the development of literacy culture in elementary schools.
