Abstract

Background: Sleep quality is defined as a state where a person is satisfied with their sleep so that they do not show signs of sleep disorders. Patients undergoing hemodialysis are 25% more likely to experience sleep disorders than normal adults. Objective: This study aims to determine the factors associated with sleep quality in hemodialysis patients. Method: This study is a quantitative study with an analytical survey design through a cross-sectional approach. The sampling technique in this study was accidental sampling. The sample in this study were patients who underwent hemodialysis regularly at least 2 times a week. Data collection used the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire in Indonesian, a physical activity questionnaire and a Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS) questionnaire with a total of 58 hemodialysis patients at RSU Imelda Pekerja Indonesia. Data analysis used bivariate data analysis with the chi-square test. Results: This study showed that there was no significant relationship between age (p=0.956), gender (p=0.225), employment status (p=0.462), duration of hemodialysis (p=0.559) and sleep quality of hemodialysis patients at Imelda Buruh Indonesia Hospital. There was a significant relationship between comorbidities (p=0.001), smoking habits (p=0.026), coffee consumption (p=0.003), physical activity (p=0.000) and fatigue levels (p=0.000). Conclusion: Lifestyle factors (smoking habits, coffee consumption), comorbidities, physical activity and fatigue levels are related to sleep quality of hemodialysis patients. Suggestion: Future researchers should examine the sleep quality of hemodialysis patients with different methods and research designs.

Abstract

Social stigma towards people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) remains a major challenge in HIV/AIDS prevention and management efforts in Indonesia. This study aims to evaluate social stigma in Pulo Brayan Darat I Village, Medan Timur District, and identify the factors that influence it. The study used a qualitative approach with a descriptive phenomenological design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with eight informants selected using purposive sampling, supplemented by observation and documentation. The results of the study found that public understanding of HIV/AIDS is still low, especially regarding its transmission, which causes stigma and fear towards PLWHA. The community considers HIV to be a deadly and easily transmitted disease, so they tend to keep their distance and discriminate, although some have begun to show an inclusive attitude towards the rights of PLHIV to work and socialize. The conclusion of this study shows that low levels of knowledge are a major factor in the emergence of stigma and discrimination, so continuous education is needed to improve social acceptance and improve the quality of life of PLHIV.

Abstract

Hemodialysis is a therapeutic intervention used to replace kidney function when the kidneys are no longer able to perform their physiological roles adequately, and it is initiated when conservative treatment fails to maintain renal function. Uremic pruritus is a commonly used term referring to a dermatological symptom characterized by an itching sensation that provokes the urge to scratch and is highly prevalent among patients undergoing hemodialysis. The administration of olive oil was conducted to evaluate its long-term effect on reducing the severity of pruritus. The objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of olive oil application in reducing pruritus among hemodialysis patients at Putri Hijau Hospital, Medan. This study employed a pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest–posttest approach. The research was conducted from February to April 2025 at Putri Hijau Hospital, Medan. The total population consisted of 60 patients, and a sample of 37 respondents was selected using purposive sampling. Bivariate analysis was performed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. The results showed that on the first day prior to olive oil application, the majority of hemodialysis patients experienced unbearable itching, with 18 respondents (48.6%). On the fifth day after the intervention, the majority of patients reported mild itching, with 19 respondents (51.4%). Based on the Wilcoxon test results, the significance value was less than 0.05, indicating a statistically significant effect. The study findings demonstrate that olive oil application significantly reduced pruritus among hemodialysis patients at Putri Hijau Hospital, Medan, with a two-tailed significance value of 0.000 (<0.05).

Abstract

Background: Dietary adherence is a crucial component in the management of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) undergoing hemodialysis. Non-adherence may lead to metabolic imbalance, increased morbidity, and reduced quality of life. Objective: To identify factors associated with dietary non-adherence among patients with CKD undergoing hemodialysis at Imelda Hospital, Medan. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among patients undergoing routine hemodialysis. Data were collected using structured questionnaires assessing knowledge, attitudes, and family support related to dietary adherence. Statistical analysis was performed using chi-square tests and logistic regression with a significance level of p < 0.05. Results: Knowledge, attitudes, and family support were significantly associated with dietary non-adherence (p < 0.05). Family support was identified as the most influential factor. Conclusion: Dietary non-adherence among hemodialysis patients is influenced by knowledge, attitudes, and family support. Strengthening patient education and family-centered nursing interventions is essential to improve dietary adherence.
