Abstract

This article discusses the applicative textual interpretation of the content of Hadith. The Hadith of the Prophet Muhammad plays a significant role in Islam as a guiding principle in life and as a source of practice in daily life. Understanding the content of Hadith requires a certain approach to avoid misunderstandings in practicing a Hadith. The abundance of misconceptions in understanding Hadith without proper approach leads to a blame game, resulting in numerous problems and conflicts due to differences in understanding, which breed mutual animosity among individuals. Understanding Hadith while considering various aspects is declining. This research presents applicative textual interpretation through several Hadith to understand the content of Hadith from the aspects of creed, worship, law, exhortation and deterrence, and guidance. This research is a qualitative study through library research, collecting data from primary sources and relevant books. This research is expected to contribute to the discourse and educate the public to understand Hadith carefully to reduce problems caused by misunderstandings in understanding the content of the Prophet's Hadith texts. Additionally, it is hoped to encourage academics to further develop research related to textual interpretation of Hadith content.

Abstract

This article aims to discuss how John Wansbrough's thought views on the Qur'an, the influence of his thoughts in the study of the Qur'an and how other orientalists and Muslim scholars assess the results of his thinking. This research uses a qualitative approach with a literature review. The results of this study show that John Wansbrough is a controversial orientalist because of his opinion about the Qur'an which is skeptic-revisionist. He revealed that the Qur'an is a continuation of the Christian and Jewish traditions or nothing more than a copy or imitation of the bible. The Qur'an according to him is a literary work, besides that he also considers that the activity of copying the Qur'an into manuscript during the reign of Abu Bakar and Usman is just a fictitious. Wansbrough's view is the result of his study of the Qur'an through the analytical approach of literary and historical criticism, which is taken from the methods of criticism commonly used in criticizing the bibles. Many Western and Muslim scholars in responding to Wansbrough's thoughts criticized but some supported him. Nonetheless, Wansbrough's methods and thoughts are enough to contribute to the development of critical methodology in the study of al-Qur'an studies and its interpretation.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the quality of the chain of narrators (isnad) in Sahih Muslim by conducting an isnad critique on the hadith about the ten natural dispositions (fitrah) of human beings. The research method used in this paper is library research, which involves utilizing books as sources for data collection, as well as applying the method of takhrij al-hadith to trace the hadith. The findings and discussion in this study reveal that one narrator in Muslim’s transmission chain was identified as having memory issues. However, the narrator's weak memory does not affect their integrity in transmitting the hadith. Based on the research conducted, the author concludes that the isnad of the hadith narrated by Muslim regarding the ten natural dispositions of human beings is classified as ḥasan li gairihi (good due to corroborating evidence). This study recommends that academics further develop isnad critique research on narrations in Sahih Muslim.

Abstract

This article examines G.H.A. Juynboll's thoughts on hadith and their implications for hadith research. This study employs a library research method, using books and articles as primary references for data sources. The results and discussion reveal that Juynboll's thoughts have significantly influenced hadith studies, including: 1) Juynboll's hadith research methods have affected the outcomes of hadith studies conducted by scholars and academics. His views on the ideal transmission chain, as outlined in his common link theory, have drawn considerable criticism from various circles; 2) Juynboll's critique of the jarh wa ta’dil system in hadith research stems from his limited understanding of the information he gathered, leading him to perceive the credibility assessments of narrators by scholars as arbitrary and influenced by subjectivity towards certain narrators; 3) Juynboll's argument to undermine the golden chain by questioning the historicity of Nāfi‘ as a hadith narrator was refuted by Harald Motzki, who demonstrated that Juynboll's shortcomings in collecting historical data were due to his limited comprehension of the aspects inherent in the information he encountered.
